Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 - Will Installing Debian Lenny Break GRUB 2
Jan 11, 2010If I install a totally different Linux distro on my existing Ubuntu 9.10 system, will it break GRUB 2? I was thinking of installing Debian Lenny, but have held off because I do not want to inadvertently wreck the boot arrangement.
I've previously installed Windows after installing Kubuntu, and had to reinstall GRUB as the bootloader as a result. It wasn't a big deal with the old GRUB, but I don't know if it's that easy with GRUB 2.
I am not sure what bootloader Debian Lenny uses. I've been looking but haven't found the answer yet. I guess if it also uses Grub 2, I wouldn't have to fix anything.
I want to try out Lenny because an app I want to use (Teamspeak 3) doesn't play nicely with Pulseaudio. Pulseaudio is integral to Ubuntu 9.10, but I have other options with Debian Lenny. I'd like to see whether the app works better there w/LXDE.
I guess I could also just make a virtual Lenny machine in Virtualbox, but I wouldn't get full use of my hardware, so I wouldn't be able to play Urban Terror (which is why I want to use Teamspeak 3).

Jan 14, 2011we know that /etc/passwd - is a replica of /etc/passwd file and acts as a backup in any damage done to /etc/passwd file..i have observed a strange thing in RHEL 5.4....for example... if /etc/passwd has 100 accounts.. then /etc/passwd - is having only 99 accounts....when i add 101 useraccount with "useradd" then /etc/passwd has 101 accounts and /etc/passwd is having the 100th account of /etc/passwd - ..when i delete /etc/passwd and recover it with /etc/passwd - from runlevel 1 the lastly created user is not having his account after recovery.. what is the solution? this is same case even with /etc/shadow and /etc/shadow -

I have three hard disks. What happened is, for some reason in the installer, it thought sda had the MBR on it. But in reality, sdb has the MBR. So when I rebooted, seeing as how I have installs of windows on sda and sdb, GRUB never appeared, and I got the windows bootloader screen.

Then i boot to win xp and used a partitioning software to take back some other unallocated space. after it rebooted to complete the partitioning processes grub wouldn't load. I'm trying to restore the grub using a ubuntu 9.10 live cd. I have two partitions in my computer, and i used the partition that contained Vista to install windows 7. Now, i'm trying to restore the grub so that i can also boot ubuntu.
When i do "sudo fdisk -l", the output is:

Ubuntu :: How To Install Grub From Live CD
May 24, 2011here it is: I tried installing grub from the Live CD to one of my hard disks (/dev/sdc) on a PCI to ATA adapter. I wanted to be able to choose which OS to boot from when the ATA adapter booted from the hard disk with GRUB on it, but all I get is a GRUB prompt. How do I make a normal GRUB menu on that hard disk with all my OS'es on the menu?

Sep 24, 2010I have been trying to repair the GRUB 2 Bootloader by using the LIVE Ubuntu Ultimate 2.7 DVD.
Basically I've been unable to boot Linux Ubuntu Ultimate 2.7 ( due to a multi boot set up) & read that it is possible to repair the boot loader by re installing it from the live dvd.
I've already tried to load up the DVD & run the Terminal program - on the command line I type '# grub-restore' & the reply is GRUB not loaded??
I've tried other command lines that are on various other posts but non of them work.
Or are there certain Linux operating system discs that have the function to repair the boot loader from the live dvd.

I booted using the live cd and all my files seem to be in order except there is nothing in the boot folder. Is there anyway to reinstall boot/grub from the live cd? I do have a backup copy of a previous menu.lst.

Mar 16, 2010I decided that I wanted to take Arch for a spin for the next week or so (I've had Ubuntu installed for a while) and so I thought the logical thing to do was to erase my partitions and start over with a new live cd...
Well.. that didn't work. I tried to do it from Disk Utility in OS X which succeeded in deleting most everything... EXCEPT grub is still in the mbr (or whatever it runs from through rEFIt). But all I see when I start up in the non-OS X partition is:

At any rate, no Live CDs work, I can't delete the partitions from OS X (including after booting up from the OS X Install disk).
If I hit F1 I can get the "grub>" prompt. But I can't figure out how to launch a live cd. To my knowlege, there's not a "bios" for rEFIt where I can force it to boot from CD, is there?

May 3, 2010I installed 10.04 by desktop image, and it did not let me install grub where I wanted. That is why I did not install grub at all. I got in console by ctrl-alt-F1 after installation is complete. How do you install grub from there?

I tried to download EasyBCD but it doesn't allow me to select the appropriate partition for Linux so I can't boot into Linux. Aug 17, 2010I had Kubuntu 9.04 and Windows XP on a Dual Boot. I upgraded using the update manager to 9.10. (I know, I'm a fool.) The Kubuntu install stated freezing hard on startup, just after the GRUB OS selection screen, at a blinking cursor and otherwise blank screen. I'm pretty sure 9.10 will work great from a fresh install, but the live cd freezes after main Kubuntu boot screen and even Windows live cd only shows Windows partition. fixmb, fixboot, bootcfg etc. do NOT replace the grub as desired.

Although, in some kiwi image types, you can specify boottimeout="n" in the image description's type element, it does not have the intended effect. Here is an example. The following type element's boottimeout attribute will invoke the first grub menu item instantly. Changing the value to zero, not only does not hide the grub screen, but seems to restore the default 10 second time out.

Jun 2, 2010Recently I messed up GRUB boot loader in my laptop installed with Ubuntu which resulted in grub rescue prompt. So I had to boot Ubuntu Live CD to get it fixed. Thought of blogging it, may be useful for some one.
This fix involves two steps. First one is to chroot into Ubuntu installation partition. Second one is to install the grub MBR (Master Boot Record). I am using Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 and Live CD also of same.

Ubuntu :: Grub Rescue Error: No Such Partition And Can't Boot To Live CD/USB!
Dec 2, 2010I have a netbook that dual-boots Win XP and Ubuntu 10.04 and accidentally hit the Win recovery mode in GRUB today, but quickly restarted without formatting or proceeding with any recovery. But upon reboot I just see: error: no such partition. grub rescue>
What I have tried so far: Boot to USB Live Disk... It won't, just goes straight to grub rescue.I do ls and it gives me (hd0) (hd0,4) (hd0,3) (hd0,2) (hd0,1) (fd0) error: fd0 cannot get C/H/S values.
set gives me
prefix=(hd0,5)/boot/grub
root=hd0,5
but if I try to boot it says unknown command so I figured I needed to find the right partition to boot from but I went through all of them with ls (hd0,4)/boot, ls (hd0,3)/boot etc. and every partition comes back "unknown filesystem".
Ubuntu :: PC Boots To Grub-rescue - Cannot Boot Live Distros From Usb
Apr 27, 2010got four partitions, one for media storage, one with ubuntu 9.10 32bit, one with crunchbang lite 9.04 64bit and one swap partition. The partition with ubuntu has been formated from ext4 to fat32 (with nothing on it, obviously). Whenever I boot up the pc now, I get an "unknown filesystem" error and a grub rescue> prompt. When I try to boot up a live usb image from my usb stick I either get a "linux kernel not found" message (crunchbang lite 32bit) or "initial menu has no LABEL entries!" error (gparted live usb) which changes to "Could not find kernel image: vesamenu.c32" after a couple of seconds. save my media partition or, more importantly, my crunchbang lite partition (which has one single important file on it, I'd love to recover). If this is somehow not possible, then I'd at least like to get my system usable again by succesfully booting from usb. I'm fairly new to using linux. I tried some grub-rescue commands, but not even the "help" command worked,
