Ubuntu :: Recover Grub With Live Cd?

So here is my problem:
I'm trying to restore the grub using a ubuntu 9.10 live cd. I have two partitions in my computer, and i used the partition that contained Vista to install windows 7. Now, i'm trying to restore the grub so that i can also boot ubuntu.
When i do "sudo fdisk -l", the output is:
Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes

I know nothing about this at all. I have never programmed a computer.. I loaned my tower to a friend who put this on ...now i have it back and cant get to my windows 98. all i get each time i boot is ...
GRUB loading ... error:no such disk grub recover>
I have tried ubuntu sec 8.4 recover mode and all i get is unreconized command.. i do not know how to set anything.. i have no disks for this not even the orginal windows recover disk.. is their anything i can do to get win to run as it use to??

I had to dual boot my computer again with windows unfortunately for school. This is something I've dealt with dozens of times in the past but when I try to recover grub 2 with the ubuntu live cd I get this:
sudo grub
sudo: grub: command not found

I'm not at all sure what happened, but now Ubuntu won't boot. A program just froze (as programs often do), so I shut down and rebooted, only to find pages and pages of gibberish about ATA sectors and stuff when I tried to get GRUB to load my usual Ubuntu platform (Karmic Koala). I tried "recovery" platforms and older ones, but no luck. I'm now using the Live CD and I've found an error saying "DISK HAS MANY BAD SECTORS" about my '160GB ATA Hitachi HTS542516K9SA00'. It apparently has 109 bad sectors, and the Live CD's assessment is that I "replace the disc".

A recent update messed up my Ubuntu (actually Xubuntu) laptop, and so I want to recover a few important files off of it before reinstalling the OS.I cannot boot into Ubuntu on my hard drive, so I put in one of my Live CDs, but couldn't figure out how to get the files from my hard drive.I googled the problem, but all the solutions talked about recovering Windows files with a Live CD.I need to recover my files that were in Ubuntu

I haven't run into this with ubuntu before. I am trying to recover some files from a damaged hard drive and when I try to use the no change to computer option I get to a log in screen. But, I don't have a user name or a password at that point.

My system got crashed yesterday. Before I do any mess up with it I would like to backup some important scripts stored in it. With so many live cds available I am confused which one is to choose. It should not be too big (in terms of mb). Any small Live cd will do.

I just downloaded, burned, and tried the ISO image. only to find out it's not a bootable, live CD, but rather a Windows program, ie. it requires booting into Windows and running it from the CD, which is not a good idea since the first thing to do in this case is to quit the OS to prevent it from using those newly available sectors to write new data. can a Linux-based live CD try and recover files recently deleted in an NTFS partition?

I installed Windows after installing Ubuntu. But Ubuntu is still intact in its partition.
I'm trying to run the Ubuntu LiveCD to recover grub, but the LiveCD no longer works. It stops the boot process and does not load completely.
I can not run Ubuntu in live mode to recover grub.
Is there any way to recover the grub/grub2 without the LiveCD?

I installed Ext2fsd from windows XP because I needed access to a text file on my ubuntu install. However, it didn't work because the drive is ext4 and all it listed was the root folders (/home, /var etc..) nothing any deeper.
I closed the app and continued working in windows.
Today I went to start my computer and it loaded the grub-rescue> prompt. I immediately tried to run "help" to find out what happened, however, grub reported the command as unknown.
I then ls and got a partial listing of the partitions.

So what do I do? How do I recover my linux partition? If the partition is bad - then how is the bios able to find the grub-rescue> prompt?

While attempting to make my secondary hard drive accessible I managed to screw up me RedHat installation.
When I boot I get: Error loading operating system
I can use the PCs boot menu to select the "2. Primary Master Drive" instead of "1. Normal" and (Unix) grub comes up.
Can I use grub to recover my Redhat install?

I have a laptop with two partitions, dual booting Vista and Ubuntu. laptop was originally furnished with Vista. It's become totally unusable and I want to install XP on the NTFS partition erasing Vista. I know that after installing XP it will overwrite the MBR and GRUB will be lost. how to recover GRUB after the XP install. all data is now on the Ubuntu partition. I need XP just for games for my kids. barbie and harry potter ...

I moved my NTFS partition with XP and after restarting got the grub> prompt. ls,grub-install and mount are not recognized. find /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0,2,a)
how can I recover? my *nix is osol and I have grub 0.97 (legacy)
I have both a osol and ubuntu cds, but it seems I should be able to load from the grub prompt.

I cannot boot into by Ubuntu 9.1 machine.... Trying either GUI or rescue mode gives me the following error messages (which i copied by hand since they were in cli)

Target doesnt have /sbin/init The only thing i remember doing before this is deleting some bootloader files... but they were on another disk so I didn't think that it would affect my ubuntu install. Guess I was wrong how I can recover my system?

I am preparing for RHCE. While doing the lab I renamed /etc/grub/grub.conf as grub1.conf. Now (obviously) system boots on grub> prompt. Can I recover without using a bootable CD? Another problem that I encountered was, while doing lab for fdisk, I used command umount -al. Now, fdisk -l is not listing the partitions but giving a message:- /proc/partitions does not exist. If I reboot the system this is restored.

My laptop setup is:
sda1: W7
sda2: FAT16
sda3: /boot
sda4: encrypted LVM with debian (everything besides /boot)
now I've re-installed W7 so grub was overwritten. I've tried the procedure which worked for me previously:booting with the netinst usb in rescue mode, choosing a root partition to mount, using grub-install to reinstall the grub:
Code: Select allmount /dev/sda3 /boot
grub-install /dev/sda
Now I'm on Jessie (stable), and this time this fails, and I am able to mount only sda3.grub-install doesn't exit so I'm assuming it has been replaced by `grub-installer'. also '/boot' doesnt exist so I created it manually.
Code: Select allmount /dev/sda3 /boot
grub-installer /dev/sda
The latter fails with
Code: Select all/dev/sda/proc not a directory

I would like to recover my grub installation in a dual boot system. if there is an easy way to recover grub using flash disk? If yes is your suggestion opensuse developed? (currently running 11.3) . It would be nice also to have some gui just to make things easier. If not I assume that then the only option is the boot from dvd. Is that right?

I let a 'friend' use my laptop over the weekend. Now when I turn it on, it loads the BIOS details, then says no active partition, then no OS cannot be found.
It looks like they have deleted the partition with SuSE with the Grub Loader.
I cannot load up SuSE or Windows 7!
Any ideas on how to recover the boot to load Windows 7?
I have tried using the Windows 7 install disc to repair - but it does not recognise that Windows is installed and wants to do a clean install only.
Is it worth trying to reinstall SuSE and hope it detects Windows on the other partition? (I assume it is still there!)
I cannot get to a command prompt.

I had windows XP on my c:drive. installed ubuntu 9.10 on a 27 gig unallocated space. ubuntu ran fine. Then i boot to win xp and used a partitioning software to take back some other unallocated space. after it rebooted to complete the partitioning processes grub wouldn't load. So i need to re install grub from this ubuntu 9.10 live cd.i tired the following

here it is: I tried installing grub from the Live CD to one of my hard disks (/dev/sdc) on a PCI to ATA adapter. I wanted to be able to choose which OS to boot from when the ATA adapter booted from the hard disk with GRUB on it, but all I get is a GRUB prompt. How do I make a normal GRUB menu on that hard disk with all my OS'es on the menu?

I have been trying to repair the GRUB 2 Bootloader by using the LIVE Ubuntu Ultimate 2.7 DVD.
Basically I've been unable to boot Linux Ubuntu Ultimate 2.7 ( due to a multi boot set up) & read that it is possible to repair the boot loader by re installing it from the live dvd.
I've already tried to load up the DVD & run the Terminal program - on the command line I type '# grub-restore' & the reply is GRUB not loaded??
I've tried other command lines that are on various other posts but non of them work.
Or are there certain Linux operating system discs that have the function to repair the boot loader from the live dvd.

I decided that I wanted to take Arch for a spin for the next week or so (I've had Ubuntu installed for a while) and so I thought the logical thing to do was to erase my partitions and start over with a new live cd...
Well.. that didn't work. I tried to do it from Disk Utility in OS X which succeeded in deleting most everything... EXCEPT grub is still in the mbr (or whatever it runs from through rEFIt). But all I see when I start up in the non-OS X partition is:

At any rate, no Live CDs work, I can't delete the partitions from OS X (including after booting up from the OS X Install disk).
If I hit F1 I can get the "grub>" prompt. But I can't figure out how to launch a live cd. To my knowlege, there's not a "bios" for rEFIt where I can force it to boot from CD, is there?

I installed 10.04 by desktop image, and it did not let me install grub where I wanted. That is why I did not install grub at all. I got in console by ctrl-alt-F1 after installation is complete. How do you install grub from there?

I recently installed Win7 on my machine and of course, that removed Grub and didn't install the boot manager. I tried to download EasyBCD but it doesn't allow me to select the appropriate partition for Linux so I can't boot into Linux. Is there a way to install Grub from the live CD Without having to completely reinstall Ubuntu??
