I had installed 10.10 on another partition, and then I wiped it, so I need to reinstall grub on my 9.10 partition. I have tried a few methods, including one that had worked for me in the past.But every time I boot my computer, it just says "GRUB loading.", and hangs. How should I fix this?

It has the message: File system wasn't safely closed on Windows fixing
How do I turn that off?
I create my own live CD, so I can modify what ever. Where is it? Initrd?
I got my wife to try Linux, so we set her machine up to dual boot with Windows. After a few weeks, she decided not to use Linux, so we deleted the Linux partitions using Gparted on a USB drive and resized the NTFS partition, under the apparently mistaken impression that Grub would detect that there was now no other operating system. When we rebooted, we got error: no such partition, followed by a grub rescue prompt. I've never worked with Grub directly before, so I have no idea what to do at this point.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI set my drives up with MY boot loader, and I boot several OSes.I installed Ubuntu and told it to place grub on the / drive, which is where I always put it with any other install and it works fine.I find now that despite telling the install where to put it, you guys have taken it upon yourselves to alter the MBR of the volume ANYWAY!
SO, what I need to do is re-install grub, but I see that you also have no repair facility on this disc either. All I want to do is use MY boot loader. Currently, when I point at the / volume it just hangs with a non-blinking cursor in the upper left.No other Linux installs I have performed over the years do this. I want the drive to boot by merely pointing my bootloader at that volume.It always has in the past, so what did you guys change? I want NO action on my MBR, but I DO want a working grub on the actual root volume, which is NOT the first volume on the drive.
It seemed that it would be simple enough: take the 'f' option in the expert menu of fdisk to put partitions in order after a gap had been created by a deleted partition and then make corresponding changes in /boot/grub/grub.conf because the root partition was shifted.
Well, it didn't work out that way. No matter what I try, I either see the error 15 at Stage1.5 or the error 28, which is even stranger (file does not fit into memory). All this before I even see a grub menu. It just does not get that far.
Does anyone want to take as stab at guessing what might have happened here and whether I have a chance at recovering without having to reinstall? I can provide concrete data, if anyone would be kind to give it a try. Hoping that this is a known problem and something can be guessed from what I stated here but I can be as specific as needed, just don't want to generate noise if there are no takers.
When I insert the Live karmic CD,t will load up to the point of starting X then the monitor shuts down into "out of range". I hear the loading music in the back round but no X or display. Now, I can load a live Knoppix CD just fine. It starts up and I have a display. I'm using an ATI-9600 graphics card

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running Karmic Server with GRUB2 on a Dell XPS 420. Everything was running fine until I changed 2 BIOS settings in an attempt to make my Virtual Box guests run faster. I turned on SpeedStep and Virtualization, rebooted, and I was slapped in the face with a grub error 15. I can't, in my wildest dreams, imagine how these two settings could cause a problem for GRUB, but they have. To make matters worse, I've set my server up to use Luks encrypted LVMs on soft-RAID. From what I can gather, it seems my only hope is to reinstall GRUB. So, I've tried to follow the Live CD instructions outlined in the following article (adding the necessary steps to mount my RAID volumes and LVMs). [URL]
If I try mounting the root lvm as 'dev/vg-root' on /mnt and the boot partition as 'dev/md0' on /mnt/boot, when I try to run the command $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0, I get an errors: grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea. grub-setup: error: Embedding is not possible, but this is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume.
Somewhere in my troubleshooting, I also tried mounting the root lvm as 'dev/mapper/vg-root'. This results in the grub-install error: $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0 Invalid device 'dev/md0'
Obviously, neither case fixes the problem. I've been searching and troubleshooting for several hours this evening, and I must have my system operational by Monday morning. That means if I don't have a solution by pretty early tomorrow morning...I'm screwed. A full rebuild will by my only option.
I'm having a problem with Wubi on my netbook, and while I could fix it easily (though probably only temporarily) by reinstalling, I've been using it since January and many of the files are files I cannot afford to lose. I'm dual booting with Windows XP, but when I choose Ubuntu 9.10 from the menu at startup, it takes me straight to Grub with the following message:

I have received an Lenovo T400 as a gift and am going to get rid of the Vista Business OS on it! It is a resource hog and sometimes has trouble hooking up to our router. I was curious yesterday on how much RAM was being used on idle and it was between 900mb and 1gb! I'm downloading Karmic 64-bit and would like to use the old GRUB instead of the beta Grub2. At least with the legacy grub I could edit it easier than the beta one. I am also wondering if Karmic would run fine using ext3 instead of ext4?
View 2 Replies View Relatedi had a system running ubuntu karmic and grub2. Last day i installed fedora 12 on another partition and also installed the older version of grub that came along with it(because i was more used to it). The current status is:1. can boot into fedora, cannot boot into ubuntu.
2. can boot into fedora, chroot into the ubuntu partition
3. no data loss
However, i just can`t boot into ubuntu from the older version of grub which i have presently. Question is: How do i boot into karmic from the older version of grub? do take some time off and reply of you know the answer!
Althought /etc/default/grub has GRUB_DEFAULT=6, after grub-update nothing changes and the default menu entry is still the first. Can someone tell me how to change the Grub default menu entry?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm a GRUB novice, unfortunately. My system is a 7-year old Dell tower. Two hard drives, each sliced up into a bunch of ~30 GB partitions. I dual-boot WinXP and Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10. I think I have GRUB2, but don't know how to check without being able to boot. This problem arose during a standard upgrade when I didn't pay attention and GRUB updated and apparently destroyed itself. Now when I boot my system, I get the following message:

Almost every fix I found in my searching involved:

but none of the solutions said what to do if that file wasn't found.

I just installed Karmic Koala on one of my hard harddrive. The other disk has Windows XP. Previously I had a working dual-boot setup, but after problems with Ubuntu I reinstalled it. On booting, I get the following:

There is no Grub menu which might allow me to drop to a Grub prompt and evaluate. This occurs whether I boot with the Ubuntu harddrive or re-set the BIOS to boot with the Windows harddrive. If I boot with a LiveCD, I see that both my Ubuntu and Windows harddrives exist and are readable; the Ubuntu was indeed wiped clean and reinstalled; the issue is with the boot process. How can I set this up to boot?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to get Grub 2 to work on a desktop system I'm trying to install Karmic Koala on. It's currently got two similar hard drives, which I've partitioned into a small /boot partition and the rest as a large general partition. Both are fd (linux software RAID) types. I boot from the Ubuntu live CD then create the RAID arrays as RAID 1 (requires installing mdadm to work). Then I start the arrays and begin the install.
I select manual partitioning and create the first RAID array (/dev/md0) as an ext4 /boot. The second array (/dev/md1) requires a new partition table. I then partition it as 20G for /, 2G for swap and the rest as /home, giving me /dev/md1p1, /dev/md1p2 and /dev/md1p3. When the install finishes, I mount the various partitions in /mnt (for /dev/md1p1) and below, including binding /dev and /proc. Then I chroot and install mdadm in the new system. I update grub, re-install it on /dev/sda & /dev/sdb then update the initramfs.
A quick reboot and things go wrong... Grub boots me into a recovery console. Apparently it can't see the partitions in the second RAID array. how to get Grub 2 and/or mdadm to work in this situation? I know that apart from the RAID, the above process worked to allow me to set up a Grub 2 boot on an antique laptop with an incomplete install.
I want to try out the realtime kernel to get my audio latency down. I have installed the realtime kernel packages according to the Ubuntu Studio preparation documentation here - I have also run sudo update-grubHowever, when I boot up, the realtime kernel option does not show up in grub2. The current kernel I am using is 2.6.31-17, but the only options in grub for it are -386 and -generic.
There is a previous entry of 2.6.31-9-rt which I had attempted to use previously (sometime last year) but if I select it, it doesn't even boot at all.I checked my /boot directory and there is no vmlinuz-2.6.31-17-rt file .... Which I am assuming is why it doesn't show up or add when I run update-grub ... But I am currently at a loss for how to actually get the 2.6.31-17 realtime kernel file and add it to grub2.
I have a laptop with Karmic Koala in dual boot with Lenny. I need to reinstall Lenny however if I do that I will loose Karmic Koala in the grub screen because of the new version of grub that comes with Karmic Koala. Which means that I will need to reinstall Karmic Koala after Lenny so that they both appear in the grub screen at startup. If I reinstall only Lenny is it possible to use Gparted to change the boot back to Karmic Koala and have them both in the grub screen again? Or is there another way around it?

I'm trying to restore the grub using a ubuntu 9.10 live cd. I have two partitions in my computer, and i used the partition that contained Vista to install windows 7. Now, i'm trying to restore the grub so that i can also boot ubuntu.

here it is: I tried installing grub from the Live CD to one of my hard disks (/dev/sdc) on a PCI to ATA adapter. I wanted to be able to choose which OS to boot from when the ATA adapter booted from the hard disk with GRUB on it, but all I get is a GRUB prompt. How do I make a normal GRUB menu on that hard disk with all my OS'es on the menu?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to repair the GRUB 2 Bootloader by using the LIVE Ubuntu Ultimate 2.7 DVD.
Basically I've been unable to boot Linux Ubuntu Ultimate 2.7 ( due to a multi boot set up) & read that it is possible to repair the boot loader by re installing it from the live dvd.
I've already tried to load up the DVD & run the Terminal program - on the command line I type '# grub-restore' & the reply is GRUB not loaded??
I've tried other command lines that are on various other posts but non of them work.
Or are there certain Linux operating system discs that have the function to repair the boot loader from the live dvd.
I decided that I wanted to take Arch for a spin for the next week or so (I've had Ubuntu installed for a while) and so I thought the logical thing to do was to erase my partitions and start over with a new live cd...
Well.. that didn't work. I tried to do it from Disk Utility in OS X which succeeded in deleting most everything... EXCEPT grub is still in the mbr (or whatever it runs from through rEFIt). But all I see when I start up in the non-OS X partition is:

At any rate, no Live CDs work, I can't delete the partitions from OS X (including after booting up from the OS X Install disk).
If I hit F1 I can get the "grub>" prompt. But I can't figure out how to launch a live cd. To my knowlege, there's not a "bios" for rEFIt where I can force it to boot from CD, is there?

I installed 10.04 by desktop image, and it did not let me install grub where I wanted. That is why I did not install grub at all. I got in console by ctrl-alt-F1 after installation is complete. How do you install grub from there?

I tried to download EasyBCD but it doesn't allow me to select the appropriate partition for Linux so I can't boot into Linux. Is there a way to install Grub from the live CD Without having to completely reinstall Ubuntu??

I have Ubuntu 10.04 with file system EXT4 and dual booting with Vista The problem is I am about to reinstall Vista which will overwrite Grub 2 I know how to restore Grub2 with the Live CD I currently I only have a Live CD of Ubuntu 8.04 which doesnt support EXT4 neither Grub2 I am on a very limited INTERNET so I cant download the Live CD. A solution would be the minimal cd image but the download stall at 96%
