This is from Centos 5.5 so I apologize to anyone who may be offended.I installed my system and it came with kernel 2.6.18-194.el5. I installed the src.rpm of this kernel with rpm, patched, and built it. Then I did a yum -y install kernel.i686 which installed kernel-2.6.18-194.32.1.el5.centos.plus.src.rpm. Since this was a yum install, why doesn't this new kernel version show in the BUILD and SPEC directory?

I also find it weird that there is actually a 2.6.30 kernel folder as well.
Not sure if this is just n00b issue, but VBox won't install and I was wondering why one of the kernels listed would link to nothing...
I've recently upgraded Arch kernel on my laptop to 2.6.38.4 and after reboot I found out that eth0 is missing in ifconfig -a (it only showed lo and wlan0). The same issue is in 2.6.38.5 that came out just couple of days ago. Any idea what can be causing this? What info should I add?

I have had for a test installed Feodora but was so silly checking the box for encryption the HD. Now I tested all for removing Feodora (no data anymore on the disc) but even the test unlocking this from my ubuntu system failed with the following error:Error unlocking device: cryptsetup exited with exit code 251: Command failed: Failed to setup dm-crypt key mapping.Check kernel for support for the aes-xts-plain64 cipher spec and verify that /dev/sdb2 contains at least 508 sectorsI installed some encryption packages in the meantime - but non was helpful.Would some kind person - who understands this better than I - please provide the detailed steps needed to mount and unlock the encrypted Feodora installed hard disc. Maybe one of you know which packege I have to install.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI had Vista installed then Ubuntu Grub showed both... then I wanted to try Fedora 13 an after install I had Fedora Bootloader but it only shows Fedora / other and other is Vista... how do I manually enter Ubuntu partition into /boot/grub.conf or should I just reinstall ubuntu grub and hopefully that will pick up vista and fedora? Lost on where to go with this.

When I install F14 on my laptop (Dell D820), Thunderbird doesn't show up when I search, and when I look at the software sources, nothing is checked. When I try to enable it, it says could not contact fedora and it will be disabled. as to what is different between the two installs?

for example if I want to create a an "Empty File", I'll right-click on desktop and when I want to go to "Create Document" menu, it doesn't show up! so I must click somewhere else and try again so for the second time it works!!
I've got a dual-booting system with Windows 7 and Opensuse 11.2. I had a few other random kernels so I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst to remove them. This was fine after a reboot, then I went to YaST and changed the default boot partition to Windows, because I had edited the MBR and put Windows above the other boot partitions, YaST changed "default" to 0.
Now after a restart the Boot Loader doesn't appear, I just have a flashing cursor. When I try to boot from an OpenSuse installation disc and try repair the Repair Kernel loads but freezes on the OpenSuse splash screen. I've heard this is due to the fact I have an ATI Radeon card, if I hold shift during the CD load to prevent the graphical interface of the CD loading. I can type to boot "rescue" but it freezes on "starting udev...". Essentially I just need to be able to edit menu.lst back to the backup I made or change the "default" value back to 1.

The thing is, it all sounds great for what I would like to do but my knowledge in that area is zero, or sub-zero.
My question is: is there an operating system out there, that will start up the computer, then have a browser installed on it - lets say Firefox - with a homepage www.example.com?... (no start button or taskbar)
Maybe no toolbars or anything else except the webpage itself.
Also the hardware should be plug and play, such as printers, mobiles scanners or any usb driven devices.

My goal is to install the i386 build on one partition and the 64-bit build on another. I have been away from Linux for a while and am sick to death of Win7, want to come home. :-}
Booted on i386 side of DVD, system freezes after a couple of lines that start with ATA2. Does not respond to 3 finger salute, ctrl-c, nothing. Have to press reset. I have tried both huge.s and hugesmp.s kernels
Booted on 64-bit side, comes up fine. I performed the install, selected for automatic lilo install. Lilo install hung but I was able to reboot. I booted off the 64-bit side again, entered the following: huge.s root=/dev/sde3 rdinit= ro It booted fully to the login prompt but the keyboard does not work, no input.
i'm using this guide videos - howto: debian linux kernel compilation, part 1 and the author says i need kernel 2.6.26 this version of kernel doesnt longer exist in kernel.org website and the only 2.6.26 i found is a patch here. should i use the patch? or download another version of kernel?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am relatively new at Linux and am having some problems with an install of openSUSE 11.2. I installed 11.2 on my Thinkpad X31 dual boot with WinXP. It seems to work very well except the network. I looked up swerdna's instructions on setting network cards up. I used YaST to try and set the system up as described in swerdna's instructions. Everything looks fine my network card and wireless card show up in the overview settings screen and everything sets up fine. But when I exit YaST the network doest show up no icon in the system tray and it doesn't even try to connect.
I did go into hardware to see if it was identifying my hardware and my network card shows up as "Thinkpad R40" and the wireless shows up as Cisco Aironet Wireless 802.11b. As far as I know this is correct. I have tried three other distro's and this one has gotten the closest to working so far.
I've a PowerMac G4 MDD that has OS X Leopard on it. I have repartitioned it to accommodate an Ubuntu install. However, I have no Disk Drive in the G4, it was broken so I removed it. Now I have an iBook G4 I have tried using an ubuntu cd on to install to the said PMac in TDM, but of course after reading the Ubuntu kernel doesn't support install to firewire by default. Can someone help me by compiling a Cd image I can use to accomplish this or tell me how without the use of another linux box?
