View 1 RepliesI want to enable ftpd, but there is none in /etc/init.d/vsftpd, /etc/init.d/wuftpd...in Redhat Entierprise Linux release 5.1 (Tikanga)
Also I could not find yum in this version --- to be able to install ftp pkg if there is non-exist.
How could I have ftp or enable ftp in the Redhat 5.1 version: Redhat Entierprise Linux release 5.1 (Tikanga)
Also I could not run : "service vsftpd start" <--- it seems the service is not existing.
I have two HP Quard core high end server.
OS : Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.2 (Tikanga)
Kernel : kernel-2.6.18-92.el5
From last couple of days I found entry in dmesg:
Should require KERNEL upgradation.?
i've configured the machine to use a static ip yet dhclient still runs and obtains an ip. what needs to be done to stop this? it has to be something i can put in a script since i have written a setup script to run on several machines. this setup script creates/modifies several files with a few key ones shown below:
/etc/sysconfig/network
Quote:
HOSTNAME=csec7154
NETWORKING=yes
NISDOMAIN=csma
NTPSERVERARGS=iburst
[code]....
and the files, hosts, resolv.conf, network and ifcfg-eth0 in the /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default directory all link to their respective files as does /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg-eth0. thanx!
I received an amber light warning "IB110 - SBE Log Disabled." I've learned from Red Hat documentation that this is "for information only". Where can I find a better explanation of this warning? Also, what is the SBE Log, how can I enable it, and where can I view it? It doesn't seem to be in /var

View 6 Replies View RelatedOpen Office crashes each and every time I try to save anything, profile,ettings, documents, spreadsheets. I submitted a help ticket to redhat, the engineer had me remove and download open office once again. The problem still persists. I have waited about two weeks for a 2nd reply from redhat, so far nothing. The particulars are:I had to reload my system. I downloaded and checked the installation disks from redhat. Once the system was downloaded I tried to run Open Office, it crashed as stated. I submited a ticket and removed Open Office as instructed using the Yum command and reinstalled Open Office using yum. The installation was taking a considerable time and I had to leave the computer.When I returned the system had rebooted so I don't know if the download was successful.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have written a manual backup script with menus using the dialog command. When using this on a centos 5(CentOS release 5.5 (Final)) server the output is the way I would like to have it. But when using it on our RHEL server (Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.3 (Tikanga)) it is almost unreadable. This RHEL server has been installed by another company so I don't know what they have configured.Now when I try to create a dialog box it is just waiting but not displaying anything.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been doing a lot of research on the web to piece together the components I need to understand what is probably a very simple thing. I've read up on buffers/cache vs. physical memory and using free -m and top and understanding that output, and reviewed Red Hat's article on virtual memory. I am hoping to get some assistance in putting it all together to understand what's happening in my situation because so far I have a lot of dangling factoids and no glue. I have also referenced the thread http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...memory-309767/ but I didn't find my answer there.
My company is running a cluster of physical web servers (they are clones so running the same OS, with same RAM and applications installed). I'll be referring to a single system although the question applies to all because they're all showing similar output. The Multi Router Traffic Grapher is showing a steady swap usage for 3-4 months now. The average usage for today is 81%. There is, as far as I know, no performance hit because of it, but a developer noticed this and wanted to know what was going on, and I'd using this opp to learn. The system is Linux version 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5, running JBOSS, postgres, Apache, and Java. Here is the output from the memory commands I have used to try and understand what's going on.
Code:
top - 21:19:27 up 159 days, 7:43, 1 user, load average: 0.52, 0.61, 0.64
Tasks: 144 total, 1 running, 143 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 0.2%us, 8.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 91.9%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st
[code]....
So my interpretation of this output tells me that my system has 4GB of RAM installed, 23MB of free "physical" RAM, and 1.35GB of RAM in cache (according to the second line of free -m, which represents free physical memory and useable mapped memory if I understand correctly). I have a 2GB swap partition, 1.5GB of which is currently being used, and according to the MRTG is the average that has been in use since January. So the swap size isn't decreasing. Java (JBOSS) is using the most physical RAM at 1.6GB.
My question is: if I have 1.35GB of RAM cached, why is my system using all of that swap space and not using any of the cached RAM? I thought I understood that Linux is supposed to either re-use unmodified pages in cache or send older pages to disk when more RAM was needed. It seems like my system is always sending pages to disk, which I guess would normally mean I just need more RAM but, to have close to the same swap size consistently seems like there must be more to it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedA client has sent me an RHEL 5.1 box for me to do some work on, but it's not registered with Red Hat. This is causing me problems, because it's a minimal installation, and I need some more dev software.My immediate reaction was to install various bits (emacs, and so on) from my Centos 5(.0) DVD.The base RHEL system only had one (disabled) repo entry,so I added a yum DVD repo entry in yum.conf.d.
This looked good to start with, but it doesn't work. Something in RHEL's pirut/yum/rpm/whatever is getting confused, and can't work out what is/isn't installed.
Question - how do you maintain an unregistered RHEL box? Has RH done something to make life difficult? Is my problem simply that I'm using a Centos 5.0 DVD, instead of Centos 5.1? Am I stuck with downloading lots of rpms from the net and doing everything manually? I really don't want to do that.
I am trying to download RHEL 5.4 AS version for testing..But under [URL] There is no specific link for AS version or ES version..How can I detect which iso is for AS and which one for ES..? There are separate links for AS and ES version for RHEL 4.x version but why is it not available for RHEL 5.x versions?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a database server running RHEL 5.1 32 bit that suffered some catastrophic failures about 6 months ago. We were able to patch it back together and keep it running, but now the manufacturing site it supports is going to shut down for two weeks and I would like to replace it permenantly. Does anyone have any guidance for that sort of thing? I'd like to have the new server up and running before hand, basically changing the hostname/ip and restoring the databases only on conversion day. I've done this in the past with HP UX - Red Hat conversions, but this is my first red hat to red hat move. Any advice or shortcuts?I forgot to add the other wrinkle. The new server will be running 64bit linux.

View 1 Replies View RelatedEnvironment:RHEL 5.2 and 5.4 AP x86_64, 2 drives (sda, sdb), installing without optional features like clustering and virtualization. I have tried this for a couple of days now and just can't get it to work. My goal is to take the RHEL 5.2 DVD and RHEL 5.4 DVD and install them on separate drives of the same machine. I want the grub menu to give me a choice. I prefer to understand the steps and choices offered me by the install dialog to do this rather than fiddle with grub.conf. If that is not possible, I will write up the bug.
So far, I just get the the error 13 when trying to start the grub added second OS. I have read elsewhere that "Anaconda frequently recognizes the other operating system and sets up grub so you can boot from either operating system". That would be nice. The install dialog lets me choose a drive to install to. I have figured out that I need to check "review and modify partitioning layout" to enter the advanced grub choices. Do I have it install a boot loader for the 1st OS? Trying to add the 1st OS during the second OS install creates a grub conf with no kernel line in the added boot stanza.
I cant seem to get the sound working and when I click on perference then sounds and go to the output selection it has only dummy output as a option.
