View 3 RepliesMy current Linux Version:
#more /etc/redhat-release
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.2 (Tikanga)
OS Bit is :
#uname -a
Linux <hostname> 2.6.18-128.1.16.el5 #1 SMP Tue Jun 30 06:45:51 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Now i want to upgrade to RHEL 5.3 (ie)Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.3 (Tikanga).
is possible to edited the default RHEL CD to have it automatically install RHEL based off of a kickstart file that I will store locally on the CD. My plan would be to put a cd in a server and have the OS automatically being installed.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWas upgrading to the newest kernel in RHEL5 from 2.6.18-164 to 2.6.18-164.10.1 but when I rebooted the machine it gave me these errors.
Unable to access resume device(/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01)
mount: could not find filesystem /dev/root
setuproot: moving /dev failed: no such file or directory
setuproot: error mounting /proc no such file or directory
setuproot: error mounting /sys no such file or directory
switchroot: mount failed: no such file or directory
kenel panic - not syncing Attempted to kill init!
So I rebooted the machine and picked the old kernel to boot up (2.6.18-164) and everything came back up fine. I don't understand why it keeps failing when trying to boot to the new kernel. I am using the yum upgrade command, is there a different command I should be using?
We are planning to migrate our LINUX server from RHEL 3to RHEL 5. What are the configuration difference between RHEL 3 to RHEL 5 for webserver installations?

View 1 Replies View RelatedA client has sent me an RHEL 5.1 box for me to do some work on, but it's not registered with Red Hat. This is causing me problems, because it's a minimal installation, and I need some more dev software. My immediate reaction was to install various bits (emacs, and so on) from my Centos 5(.0) DVD.The base RHEL system only had one (disabled) repo entry,so I added a yum DVD repo entry in yum.conf.d.
This looked good to start with, but it doesn't work. Something in RHEL's pirut/yum/rpm/whatever is getting confused, and can't work out what is/isn't installed.
Question - how do you maintain an unregistered RHEL box? Has RH done something to make life difficult? Is my problem simply that I'm using a Centos 5.0 DVD, instead of Centos 5.1? Am I stuck with downloading lots of rpms from the net and doing everything manually? I really don't want to do that.
I am trying to download RHEL 5.4 AS version for testing..But under [URL] There is no specific link for AS version or ES version..How can I detect which iso is for AS and which one for ES..? There are separate links for AS and ES version for RHEL 4.x version but why is it not available for RHEL 5.x versions?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a database server running RHEL 5.1 32 bit that suffered some catastrophic failures about 6 months ago. We were able to patch it back together and keep it running, but now the manufacturing site it supports is going to shut down for two weeks and I would like to replace it permenantly. Does anyone have any guidance for that sort of thing? I'd like to have the new server up and running before hand, basically changing the hostname/ip and restoring the databases only on conversion day. I've done this in the past with HP UX - Red Hat conversions, but this is my first red hat to red hat move. Any advice or shortcuts?I forgot to add the other wrinkle. The new server will be running 64bit linux.

View 1 Replies View RelatedEnvironment:RHEL 5.2 and 5.4 AP x86_64, 2 drives (sda, sdb), installing without optional features like clustering and virtualization. I have tried this for a couple of days now and just can't get it to work. My goal is to take the RHEL 5.2 DVD and RHEL 5.4 DVD and install them on separate drives of the same machine. I want the grub menu to give me a choice. I prefer to understand the steps and choices offered me by the install dialog to do this rather than fiddle with grub.conf. If that is not possible, I will write up the bug.
So far, I just get the the error 13 when trying to start the grub added second OS. I have read elsewhere that "Anaconda frequently recognizes the other operating system and sets up grub so you can boot from either operating system". That would be nice. The install dialog lets me choose a drive to install to. I have figured out that I need to check "review and modify partitioning layout" to enter the advanced grub choices. Do I have it install a boot loader for the 1st OS? Trying to add the 1st OS during the second OS install creates a grub conf with no kernel line in the added boot stanza.
I want to enable VNC as per my Knowledge VNC is for remote assistance (Plz correct If am wrong) so how to enable and use it in Redhat-4.

I just did a fresh install of an RHEL 4 on a Fujitsu Primergy server.
However when i try to boot, the machine restarts all over again.
The kernel version is: 2.6.9-42 The server use an intel Xeon processor with Sata Disks and an LSI MegaRaid controller.m.
I configured YUM and working fine but I want to collect these rpm's and maintain a backup for future use.
*Frndz where I can get installed rpm's through yum
*Is there any way to retreve back the installed rpm's.
*Or how can I get rpm's for backup purpose.
I've looked around for examples of how to add a repository to my yum installation. I tried creating /etc//yum.repos.d/dag.repo as follows:I have to play some trickery to post the file here, so please understand. linuxforums won't let me put "urls to another site" in this email.I had to remove the first part of the URL to confuse the linuxforum parser.

Insofar I've failed dual boot any 2 fedoras.(I've heard that there is an issue with grub legacy, it can't dual boot .. is it so? hard to believe! So far I first installed SL 6 , installed its /boot on MBR and then installed Fedora KDE on other drive and installed its /boot on some other drive ... can't dual boot only getting SL 6 at booting. For both os I was using lvm for their primary drives.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've always used the network init service to manage my network interfaces on headless servers and used NetworkManager on desktop installs. Lately it seems that NetworkManger is becoming more and more integrated into network management even on servers. I have a RHEL6 server in my lab that runs NM without any Gnome components installed and I've noticed in Fedora NM becoming more tightly coupled with the system-config-network related services.
I'm asking because this is a "highly connected" server, with two redundant NICs on each of two different networks with a bond interface associating each pair for redundancy. Every time the server reboots it fails to configure its default route correctly. I know how to configure the network using the standard /etc/sysconfig/network and ifcfg-* scripts. Is NM fully integrated with these configuration files?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just started testing a redhat enterprise linux 5 installation. This installation took place in a Latitude D630 labtop which currently has Ubuntu Desktop in (sda1) and Ubuntu Server in (sda3). My goal was to install Redhat Enterprise Linux 5 into (sda4). Both of the Ubuntu installation boot fine and work, but when I try booting the RHEL it shows a panic in the loading phase as follow VFS: Cannot open root device "sda4" or unknown-block(0,0)Please append a correct "root=" boot optionKernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)I am wondering what this means, maybe some of you would have a better clue than I do
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install gcc from source, but wish to install to an alternative location, ie /opt/gcc/4.4.4.
I have done so but ran into the problem that the system libs in /usr/lib64 were being located before my libs in /opt/gcc/4.4.4/lib64.
So, I set --libdir=/usr/lib and reinstalled. The libs link in correctly, but now g++ cant find includes, for instance <complex>. I think I could set CPATH to point to the locations of these includes but that doesn't seem like it should be necessary.
So my question is, what is the correct way to install gcc alongside the system versions while allowing linkage to the right libs and location of the includes? I don't want to use prefixes or suffixes because the intel compiler looks at gcc -v to get clues as to how to compile stuff.
It should be noted that I have no internet connectivity on this machine, so building from source is my only option.
I am trying samba 4 in rhel 5 but no luck. Any body here got and success in samba 4.
