View 6 RepliesI use putty to get to my RHEL 5.3 workstation from my Windows laptop.
Typically, if I want a new terminal on my windows 7 workstation from another terminal or mc, I have to type start and I will see a new terminal window running the default shell.
QUESTION : What is the equivalent command in RHEL 5.3 (and or solaris) to create a new terminal window from the command line ? I will be entering this command from the shell prompt or mc's command line.
In Windows, if I want to start another terminal and in that terminal, I want to run a program, I can do "start program.exe arg1 arg2". this will create a new terminal window and runs program.exe in that terminal window. I don't have to create a terminal and then in a separate step run the program. How can I do this in Linux ?
I'd like show a certain line or lines of a file with context, kind of like a unified diff, on the command line in Linux:

View 3 Replies View RelatedI know my way around MS Windows much better, but I just don't feel right trying to program something for Android on a Microsoft operating system. I am interested in Android programming so I followed the instructions on [URL] to install the environment on my computer...
I just installed the JDK, SDK, Eclipse successfully (or I assume):
* When I get to Step 4 where I'm supposed to run 'android' it will not run. I get the error message "android: command not found" (I am definitely in the right directory).
** When I double-click it in nautilus, it opens up in gedit. I can set the permissions in nautilus (through the properties - Allow executing file as a program) and get it to work,

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a program which mounts /dev/sdb1 for which I lack the source code. This device does not exist on my RedHat 9 system and I want to create /dev/sdb1 such that it's an alias for /dev/hdb1 Can I do this? with MAKEDEV?
I need to have an alias which will allow it to mount, not create a symbolic link to an already mounted directory. i.e. 'mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/harddrive' should actually mount /dev/hdb1

View 2 Replies View RelatedOpen Office crashes each and every time I try to save anything, profile, ettings, documents, spreadsheets. I submitted a help ticket to redhat, the engineer had me remove and download open office once again. The problem still persists. I have waited about two weeks for a 2nd reply from redhat, so far nothing. The particulars are:I had to reload my system. I downloaded and checked the installation disks from redhat. Once the system was downloaded I tried to run Open Office, it crashed as stated. I submited a ticket and removed Open Office as instructed using the Yum command and reinstalled Open Office using yum. The installation was taking a considerable time and I had to leave the computer. When I returned the system had rebooted so I don't know if the download was successful.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed RHEL-5 on a 64-bit machine recently, and want to install java. Earlier when I did "java -version", it showed jre1.4.0. But for my application , I need jre 1.5.0 or later, so I decided to download jre1.6. I am the root user here and I downloaded the jre1.6 as rpm.bin as well as simple .bin format.
But the problem is that when I tried executing any of them, I am getting below error message :
" ./jre-6u16-linux-x64-rpm.bin: line 368: ./install.sfx.20520: cannot execute binary file"
Moreover, now when I tried "java -version", it is not showing any thing.
Could anybody suggest me how can I resolve this deadlock situation, as I need to install my other application at the earliest.

So on their forum I asked how to install the latest "sqlite" database package on linux. They told me to run. Now, I don't think I need "sudo" because I am the root user on my database, and I don't think I can use "apt-get" because I'm using redhat, not ubuntu.
1) Is there a way of running the above command on redhat? (A redhat command for installing things?)
2) How can I be sure I'm using redhat and not some other OS?

I was trying to learn more about xorg configuration and came through an exercise that should be run at run level 3. So, I wrote init 3 in the command line then the x server stopped and the system was trying to enter run level 3 but then it hangs and nothing happens. At that time I was connected to the system via putty and wrote the command init 5 and the x server started again normally. I tried init 3 again and had the same thing.

Is there a single key strike through which i can do it ? like going to the word "to" and striking that key will put rest of the words in new line. ( i want to do it in normal mode , not in the usual insert mode where it obviously can be done by typing <Enter> )
I typed in sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop and it tells me it's already installed. Good. So it should work. I type sudo/etc/init.d/gdm start and the screen goes blank for 8 seconds three times in a row and then back to the command line. I have also tried gdm start without the path before and it says GDM already running. Aborting! I have 8.10 and it's a valid disk (no errors).
