Red Hat / Fedora :: Increase Detail Of Messages Logfile To Help Resolve A Intermittent Crash?

Mar 29, 2010

My server is running Red Hat 4.1.2-44.I am having an issue with it hanging (website doesn't respond, can't connect via SSH (it's a remote server)) after 4am on every 3rd Sunday or so.A reboot is required to get the server responding again.I have checked every logfile I can find and found nothing that helps me. The thing I have noticed is that some of these log files start afresh after the reboot so my initial thoughts are that it is a logrotate issue or something similar.

The last activity I can find before the reboot (at 8:32) is in the logfile /var/log/cron:
Mar 28 04:22:01 crond[9356]: (root) CMD (run-parts /etc/cron.weekly)
Mar 29 08:32:39 crond[3884]: (CRON) STARTUP (V5.0)

Ubuntu Servers :: Redirect Messages From Kernel Ringbuffer To A Logfile?

Aug 2, 2010

Is there a way I can redirect messages from kernel ringbuffer to a logfile, e.g. with rsyslogd? With redirect I mean that the messages do no longer appear in dmesg, but only in the logfile.
In my case that should be iptables log messages.

Hardware :: USB Headset Causes Crash In Fedora 14 - Resolve It?

Feb 13, 2011

So this is really weird - my Logitech headset that I've been happily using with Fedora since Fedora 10 has suddenly started freaking out Fedora 14. Everything was fine until last night, I was listening to some music and it was getting late so I decided to switch to headphones. It was ok for half an hour then, when I think I (maybe, I can't be sure) knocked the USB plug in its socket, Fedora just froze. No coming back.

After a minute of plugging, unplugging, various attempts to get out of Gnome, etc. I gave up and held down the power button. Machine came back fine, I shrugged thinking it was 'one of those things', plugged in the headset again and *bam* - instant freeze! Weird. It's never done this before.

So I restarted *again* - this time plugged the headset in a different socket, same problem. Fedora froze as soon as I plugged it in.

Looking at the logs, here are some excerpts up to the crashes, in case they help. I think this is the lead-up to the initial crash code...

Again, right after those lines Linux froze and the log just tails off.

What's even weirder here is there doesn't seem to be any consistency, a repeating pattern before the crash - but it is always the instant I plug in my headset.

Debian :: WiFi Connection Cause Squeeze To Crash / Resolve This?

Aug 21, 2010

I'm using Debian-Squeeze, and the command "uname -a" results in "Linux debian 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Sat Jul 24 01:47:24 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux". The desktop environment is Gnome 2.30.2.

My problem is wireless connection causes the system to crash. Here is the detail: my university uses a WiFi service that we have to enter our ID and password in a certain web page in the browser to get access to the Internet, while the WiFi signal is automatically picked up. My laptop crashes each time I connecting to such wireless network. But back home, when connecting to my own WiFi, everything is all right.

As the only thing I can do when such crash happens is to press the power button to force the computer to shut down, I've gathered no more information till now.

Does anyone know what's wrong and how to fix it?

Ubuntu :: Laptop Crash - Black Screen / Resolve This?

Mar 18, 2010

My laptop was shut down normally, but when it restarts - it just shows the very first image (Toshiba something....) which is the screen where it says what commands to type to get into bios.

After this - the screen shows nothing more. All black, except some faint (extremely faint) lines...

I don't know - my first thought was that the screen itself was caput, but since it shows the initial screen - I guess it's not...

Red Hat / Fedora :: OpenVPN - Running As Non Admin - Error "opening Logfile"

Jan 5, 2010

I am using a custom OpenVPN install using 7zip. It installs the program and unzips the keys and configuration files to the correct location. This is being installed by an administrator and needs to work for non admin users. Before there was an issue about not pushing the routes correctly and I am going to get around that by adding the users to the Network Config group which will allow them to add routes but not a whole lot more power. Now I am getting the error "Error opening logfile for writing C:Program FilesOpenVPNlogclient.log.

You probably don't have administrator privileges, which are necessary to run OpenVPN." Is there anyway around this? OpenVPN still works even though this error occurs so is there anyway to just turn the error off (changing verb to 0 does not work) or recompile it to ignore this error? Is there anyway to change the logging location to event viewer or another directory such as C:Users\%currentuser%OpenVPN.log (when I try to do this with log or log-append option it throws another error and doesn't work so I would prefer event viewer so there wouldn't be any permission issues).

Red Hat / Fedora :: Cluster Virtual IP Intermittent?

Sep 20, 2010

rhel5.5 rhcs cluster and xen kernel . now the cluster is running . the service ccsd .cman ,and rgmanager does work on both of the cluster member host. now I have a connecting problem when access the cluster virtual IP from different subnet clients. the clients in the different subnet with the cluster virtual iP access the VIP , the connection is intermittent ,while the clients in the same subnet of the VIP access the cluster VIP the connection is always on.

could anybody tell me , does the xen kernel has impacts to the cluster , or is this only a networking problem not a system problem? I monitor the switch mac table, find that , the mac of eth0 is always changing . so maybe it is xen kernel problem. I refer to some xen materials , the eth0 is a virtual adapter .and the original physical adapter eth0 is renamed as pth0 and works as a bridge .so how could I fix a mac address to eth0 ?

The Network Connection indicates eth0 and eth1 are both set at "Auto" Strangely the "Last Used" column indicates "Never" for both even when I am actually connected, and on line.

Fedora :: Grsync/rsync Crash / Grsync Run For Some Time And Once It Nears Completion It Will Crash?

Jun 14, 2011

I'm running Fedora 15 with current updates and kernel. I do not have anything special or non-standard about my configuration or setup. I use grsync to sync my home folder files to a remote rsync server on my network. I've checked my hard drives and my memory and everything else I can think. Here is the problem:

grsync will run for some time and once it nears completion it will crash. This, however, is no standard crash. It literally shuts my computer "OFF". I have shared the remote rsync folder through CIFS as well and I can copy those exact same files through nautilus with drag and drop without issue. I have had a few occasions where the rsync process will complete without issue, but this is a rare occasion. Since it powers my computer completely off I do not enjoy the luxury of having any log files or messages to attempt to diagnose from.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Intermittent Slow Access To Cifs Mounted Shares

The shares get mounted correctly and you can navigate through the directories and open files. The only problem is that it randomly starts going really slow taking 30 seconds or longer to open a directory that has 2 or 3 files in it.I have tried quite a few things to try and fix this without any luck. Its getting to the point where I am having to consider recommending that we use windows instead, which I would rather not do as I think its good for students to experience different operating systems during school.

Fedora Networking :: Network Connection Intermittent After DHCP Configuration - Stops Working Randomly

Jul 17, 2009

I'm having a bizarre problem where my network connection stops working randomly. At first I thought it was a DNS issue since Firefox simply chilled out on "Looking up [hostname]" until it timed out, but after further investigation (pinging IP's, "host" and "dig" being unable to reach servers) it became apparent that I couldn't even access the DNS servers i.e. the Wicked Connection of the East was most sincerely dead.

There are two strange things about this: one, there are no errors except "timeout". The network manager is happy, Firefox is happy until the lookup fails... Two, the failures only start *after* DHCP configuration. DHCP configuration never has any trouble sending or receiving packets. I'm going to try static IP and whatnot to see if that helps, more information later.

Red Hat :: Yum Info <packagename> Level Of Detail On Packages Found Over A Webbrowser

Mar 10, 2010

Normally to find out some info on a package we have installed on our system, i pop open a shell window and execute: yum info <packagename> and this returns a lot of useful info (in this example, lets consider GIT) about statistics on currently released packages:

Code:
Name : git
Arch : i386
Version : 1.5.5.6
Release : 4.el5
Size : 8.4 M
Repo : installed
Summary : Core git tools

obviously using a few commands at the shell is a little bit easier than this, but some users may be using software without ssh access enabled.

[Code].....

However, is there a way to do 'yum info' like commands via the web browser on packages that are released but that we haven't yet installed or updated to? Or even on packages in other repositories (RPMForge, CentOSPlus) without having to configure our version of YUM in include those repositories so we can query them? I guess in the debian-sphere, the way i used to do stuff like this was via their website. Like for git, i did:[URL]
