Ubuntu Installation :: Installer Won't Recognize Partitions - Error Message Saying Partitions Over Sized

Mar 22, 2011

I used Ubuntu before, without problems but since the 10.04 version it won't recognize my partitions. I formated my laptop and partitioned it, installed Windows 7 64bit, which I need for my work, and wanted now to install Ubuntu 10.04/10. I then used GParted to check my Harddisk and it is having troubles to recognize my partitions, too while Windows finds them. GParted is giving me an error message saying my partitions are oversized. I am still in the beginning of my Linux experiences and so I don't know what to do. I have two 250GB harddisks (how Windows recognizes them),

Red Hat / Fedora :: Cluster Virtual IP Intermittent?

Sep 20, 2010

rhel5.5 rhcs cluster and xen kernel . now the cluster is running . the service ccsd .cman ,and rgmanager does work on both of the cluster member host. now I have a connecting problem when access the cluster virtual IP from different subnet clients. the clients in the different subnet with the cluster virtual iP access the VIP , the connection is intermittent ,while the clients in the same subnet of the VIP access the cluster VIP the connection is always on.

could anybody tell me , does the xen kernel has impacts to the cluster , or is this only a networking problem not a system problem? I monitor the switch mac table, find that , the mac of eth0 is always changing . so maybe it is xen kernel problem. I refer to some xen materials , the eth0 is a virtual adapter .and the original physical adapter eth0 is renamed as pth0 and works as a bridge .so how could I fix a mac address to eth0 ?

General :: Intermittent LAN Connection Booting Fedora 13

Oct 3, 2010

From time to time I have no connection to the net after booting the machine. This is a wired connection that goes through a switch, then a router to a DSL modem. When there is no automatic connection, I can't connect manually either However if I re-boot the connection works normally.

The Network Connection indicates eth0 and eth1 are both set at "Auto" Strangely the "Last Used" column indicates "Never" for both even when I am actually connected, and on line.

Ubuntu :: Intermittent Boot Failure - Error "cannot Mount Sdb1"

Jan 4, 2011

I have 10.10 installed and working OK. The Home directory is located on a second 1TB disk (sdb1). Recently, I've started to experience random boot failures where the start-up routine gets as far as showing the '10.10' logo with the progress dots underneath, but then throws up an error message saying that it cannot mount sdb1. I then have an option to Quit or drop into the shell to do a manual restart.

If I then do a Ctrl/Alt/Del, the system reboots, but usually fails again. Powering off and on, sometimes more than once, is the only way to eventually get a clean boot. The drive causing the problem is fairly new and all the diagnostic checks seem to indicate that it's healthy, so I'm not sure what causes the problem.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Intermittent Slow Access To Cifs Mounted Shares

The shares get mounted correctly and you can navigate through the directories and open files. The only problem is that it randomly starts going really slow taking 30 seconds or longer to open a directory that has 2 or 3 files in it.I have tried quite a few things to try and fix this without any luck. Its getting to the point where I am having to consider recommending that we use windows instead, which I would rather not do as I think its good for students to experience different operating systems during school.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Increase Detail Of Messages Logfile To Help Resolve A Intermittent Crash?

My server is running Red Hat 4.1.2-44.I am having an issue with it hanging (website doesn't respond, can't connect via SSH (it's a remote server)) after 4am on every 3rd Sunday or so.A reboot is required to get the server responding again.I have checked every logfile I can find and found nothing that helps me. The thing I have noticed is that some of these log files start afresh after the reboot so my initial thoughts are that it is a logrotate issue or something similar.

The last activity I can find before the reboot (at 8:32) is in the logfile /var/log/cron:

Fedora Networking :: Network Connection Intermittent After DHCP Configuration - Stops Working Randomly

Jul 17, 2009

I'm having a bizarre problem where my network connection stops working randomly. At first I thought it was a DNS issue since Firefox simply chilled out on "Looking up [hostname]" until it timed out, but after further investigation (pinging IP's, "host" and "dig" being unable to reach servers) it became apparent that I couldn't even access the DNS servers i.e. the Wicked Connection of the East was most sincerely dead.

There are two strange things about this: one, there are no errors except "timeout". The network manager is happy, Firefox is happy until the lookup fails... Two, the failures only start *after* DHCP configuration. DHCP configuration never has any trouble sending or receiving packets. I'm going to try static IP and whatnot to see if that helps, more information later.

Ubuntu Installation :: Error: Can't Have Overlapping Partitions

Jan 21, 2011

I read many threads regarding `gparted` not showing up hard disk partitions. Also read the advice not to change partition table according to solution to given to others. So posting my partition table here...

Code:

sudo parted /dev/sda print
Error: Can't have overlapping partitions.

Code:

mint@mint ~ $ sudo fdisk -lu
Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders, total 625142448 sectors

[code]...

I guess entire disk is taken as extended partition and primary partition(/dev/sda4) lying within this. So this is may be similar to thread [URL]. Correct me if I am wrong and also advice me on how to proceed further.

Ubuntu :: Dd Input/output Error - Copy Disc W/2 Partitions?

Mar 3, 2011

I was given a CD for work purposes and when I put the disc into the drive I get 2 disc icons on my desktop. One has data (a pdf file) and the other has serveral audio tracks. I tried to use dd to image the disc but it gives an input/output error immediately without copying anything. If I try to use brasero or k3b to copy the disc it only copies the audio portion. The data portion does not show up in the drop down to copy - only the audio. If I right-click the data (or audio) desktop icon and select 'copy' from the shortcut menu then it creates an image of the audio portion.

for dd i tried:
dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/home/username/test.iso
This give an immediate error with no data written to the iso file.
dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/home/username/test.iso bs=2M conv=notrunc,noerror

This copies a small amount of data to an iso file but it wasn't usable.

Ubuntu Installation :: Error Message Concerning Swap Space - Partitions Missing

Jan 3, 2010

The hard drive is 250 gb: Vista boot 157 gb partition; a partially-occupied 33 gb partition which was designated as swap-space; a newly partitioned and ext3 formatted 30gb for the Ubuntu installation. I believe there is also a hidden partition ~20 gb with "hidden" system info. During installation I received an error message concerning the swap space partition, which forced me out of the installation and back to the ubuntu partition manager screen. Now in Vista my 33 and 30 gb partitions are missing. Is there anyway I can get back to pre-Ubuntu state?

Ubuntu Installation :: CD Doesn't Detect Partitions But No Apparent Overlapping Partitions?

Mar 3, 2010

Xubuntu 9.04 installation CD not detecting any of the current partitions. This all started when I reinstalled windows XP a few days ago. After, the computer wouldn't boot into GRUB and would boot directly into windows.Other threads have dealt with a similar issue, that of overlapping partitions causing libparted/parted/gparted to detect the whole drive as unallocated space. The problem in these threads seemed to be a corrupted partition table, in which the partitions overlapped with each other. So of course I checked the output of fdisk -l for overlapping partitions, but I don't see any obvious overlapping partitions. I've noticed that the partition that used to be linux swap isn't showing up in the partition table at all. I might just be missing something simple here and would like another set of eyes to help me figure this one out. Does the problem have anything to do with the partition table being out of order (ie. not in order of what regions they cover on the drive)? From the liveCD I've run

Code:

sudo fdisk -lu
sudo sfdisk -d
sudo parted /dev/sda print

and have received the following output:

Code:

ubuntu@ubuntu:/mnt$ sudo fdisk -lu
omitting empty partition (5)
Disk /dev/sda: 60.0 GB, 60011642880 bytes

Hardware :: Change Primary Partitions To Logical Partitions AND Migrate Their Data?

Mar 28, 2010

I've installed Arch Linux onto my Western Digital SATA drive.I love it, best ever, however, I need the fglrx proprietry driver for better 3-d performace, and decided to create a new partition. I decided to install Linux Mint.Sadly, in all my noobishness, I forgot about the 4 primary partition limit (oops!) and as I have /, /home, swap, and /boot partitions (all primary) already installed, I have run into a bit of a problem.I resized my /home partition (almost 500GB) to about 225, and was then told I have over 200GB unusable space. Is it possible for me to change at least 1 of my primary partitions to logical partitions AND keep all the data intact (AND edit the arch configuration so that it'll still work) so I can install a second linux? I sincerely doubt it
