General :: Split Logfile For Error Logs?

Dec 30, 2009

Is there a tool already out there that will split error logs based on the virtual host they belong to? Or perhaps a somewhat simple way to write a script that can do this? I'll keep looking for a solution but I thought I'd ask in case someone here has one to offer.

Red Hat / Fedora :: OpenVPN - Running As Non Admin - Error "opening Logfile"

Jan 5, 2010

I am using a custom OpenVPN install using 7zip. It installs the program and unzips the keys and configuration files to the correct location. This is being installed by an administrator and needs to work for non admin users. Before there was an issue about not pushing the routes correctly and I am going to get around that by adding the users to the Network Config group which will allow them to add routes but not a whole lot more power. Now I am getting the error "Error opening logfile for writing C:Program FilesOpenVPNlogclient.log.

You probably don't have administrator privileges, which are necessary to run OpenVPN." Is there anyway around this? OpenVPN still works even though this error occurs so is there anyway to just turn the error off (changing verb to 0 does not work) or recompile it to ignore this error? Is there anyway to change the logging location to event viewer or another directory such as C:Users\%currentuser%OpenVPN.log (when I try to do this with log or log-append option it throws another error and doesn't work so I would prefer event viewer so there wouldn't be any permission issues).

I noticed that on my server, I keep getting the same error flooding my logs:

Everything is working fine before I create the array, here are my hdparm outputs:

CentOS 5 Server :: Stop Apache Logs (access/error/ssl) From Being Deleted?

Apr 22, 2009

I don't mind that apache logs "rotate". By that, I mean that periodically the most recent log is renamed "*.1" and the older logs are bumped up a number In my particular situation, I do mind that the log that was "*.4" is deleted rather than being renamed to "*.5" when that periodic renaming happens.

I know most of the other /var/log files have the same behavior. What does this? Can I change it so my apache logs are "rotated" up but aren't deleted? I know this will take some hard drive space, but I have a lot of it.

EDIT: CentOS 5.3, kernel 2.6.18-128.1.6.el5, Apache 2.2.3

Software :: Sftp Error Message / "split -b 1400k" Was Burned Into Synapses?

Feb 11, 2010

I was using sftp to pull a file from a system and the transfer aborted with the message:

Code:
Received message too long
followed by a large number and I was kicked all the way out to a shell prompt.

Anyone know what problem might have caused this? I was using the Cygwin's sftp when this happened.

The file I was getting wasn't very large (5.5M) and certainly nowhere near the largest I've grabbed using sftp. Luckily the remote system was 'IX and I was able to dust off my memories of the "split" command (before USB drives became common, "split -b 1400k" was burned into my synapses) and reassemble the file once I got all the chunks transferred. Still, having to do this is weird.

Ubuntu Networking :: Nothing Appears In Logfile That Even Mentions Default Route

Feb 28, 2010

In an attempt to get something that, well, you know, just works... I migrated a laptop to Karmic server today. Which works fine, except for one thing: when I use wvdial and a Huawei E160g USB modem to connect to the Internet (which is the only option out here in the sticks where I live) no default gateway is set. When I add one manually everything is fine, except that the default gateway keeps disappearing after a while (at irregular intervals, as far as I can see). Nothing appears in any logfile that even mentions the default route, let alone a reason for its magical vanishing trick. My wvdial.conf is fairly pedestrian:

[Code]...

What's going on here? I'm stumped. And the mighty Googlebrain doesn't seem to know, either. How do I get wvdial & friends to set the correct default route upon connecting? Given the fact that without a default route a PPP connection to a remote network is little use, I would expect this to be a standard feature and not something that I'd have to script a work-around for myself. But then, I have been wrong before. Secondly, and more importantly, why does my default route keep disappearing without a trace?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Increase Detail Of Messages Logfile To Help Resolve A Intermittent Crash?

My server is running Red Hat 4.1.2-44.I am having an issue with it hanging (website doesn't respond, can't connect via SSH (it's a remote server)) after 4am on every 3rd Sunday or so.A reboot is required to get the server responding again.I have checked every logfile I can find and found nothing that helps me. The thing I have noticed is that some of these log files start afresh after the reboot so my initial thoughts are that it is a logrotate issue or something similar.

The last activity I can find before the reboot (at 8:32) is in the logfile /var/log/cron:
Mar 28 04:22:01 crond[9356]: (root) CMD (run-parts /etc/cron.weekly)

Server :: Create A Separate Logfile For Host Sending Logging To Rsyslog?

Feb 16, 2011

After struggling and googling on the internet I can't manage it to work.I have stup rsyslog to receive the logging from my firewall and it puts it into the syslog file.ut I would like to have a separate logfile for these messages.I have created the firwall.log file with owner syslog, same as for the syslog file.I already have tried to use in the /etc/rsyslog.d/10-firewall.conf the following ::msg, contains, "firewalld" /var/log/firewall.logor
:msg, contains, "firewalld" -/var/log/firewall.logI don't know the difference between the "-" sign in the lines but I have seen also those kind of situations.

I also have put this line into the 50-default.conf file because I thought it wasn't seeing the 10-firewall.conf file but no work.I have added a $template HostMessages, "/var/log/%HOSTNAME%/logfile.log" in the /etc/rsyslog.conf file but neither it works. In the firewall I can see the Syslog facility is now on LOG_LOCAL0 and I can change it from LOCAL0, LOCAL1, LOCAL2, ... until LOCAL7What does these different numbers mean

General :: Extract SampleID From Split Line?

Oct 12, 2010

I have a text file of n-number of tab-delimited lines ("INPUT") which I would like to parse line-by-line to a text output file depending on the SampleID of the line. These lines contain a unique SampleID and each subject has several lines of data.

[code]....

I also have a text file of relevant SampleID ("INPUT2"). The basic idea is that I read a line from INPUT, split the tab-delimited line, extract the SampleID from the split line, compare the SampleID of this line to my list of relevant SampleIDs. If there is a match, then print the line from INPUT to OUTPUT, then move on to the next line of INPUT. Alternatively, if there is no match, then move on to the next line in INPUT. I tried to script this (extreme newbie at perl right now) and failed miserably, but here is what I have at the moment:
