Red Hat / Fedora :: Kickstart Missing Selected Packages On Install?
May 3, 2011
I am trying to use kickstart to create a master boot disk for all of my server installs. Unfortunately it seems to be missing some of the packages specified and I can't figure out why. Here is the packages section of my ks.cfg file
Note: all at symbols have been replaced with # because the forum filter seems to think they are urls.
%packages
#admin-tools
#base
#core
#dns-server

I am looking into Kickstart installations for Red hat 5. Previously I used RHELWS4 and I would use the "all packages" flag to get around having to specify all the packages.
For example:
%packages
@ everything
kernel-devel
kernel-largesmp-devel
e2fsprogs
kernel
kernel-largesmp
Would get me everything on the RHELWS4 DVD. From what I can see this option is not present in RHEL5. Can someone please provide some advice on a way to automatically parse the RHEL5 DVD and generate a list of packages so that I can ensure all the packages are present in the installation? I imagine I would need to do this for each update of RHEL5 since the package list will evolve over time.

After reading this announcement, I don't understand if Xubuntu 10.04, or others ubuntu 10.04 variants, will be also LTS. What I understand is that :
- Ubuntu 10.04 (Gnome) Desktop Edition is a LTS.
- Ubuntu 10.04 Server Edition is a LTS
- Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition is NOT a LTS
- Kubuntu 10.04 seems to be a LTS
- Xubuntu 10.04
- Mythbuntu 10.04
- Ubuntu Studio 10.04
Obviously, I can't understand how some variant could be LTS and not some others : they are all using the same repositories. So, Canonical would maintain updates for only selected packages ?Does anyone knows more about that LTS attribution ?

I'm attempting to install Debian (Stable) from a business net install disc. The problem? I can't load/install the packages I need to connect to my USB 3G modem. When I load up a shell (tty2?), I'm brought to an 'ash' prompt, and there's no DPKG for me to load the necessary packages.
how I can do a total net install, including the base, from an USB 3G modem? Actually, I'm very surprised that current Linux distros don't seem to include support, for this growing market share type of internet connection.

I have not used Fedora in a long while (since version 5 I think).I am moving back to it for my new home server but there is something that is driving me completely crazy. Can you no longer do HDD installs from a ISO?I whipped out my old kickstart files and worked off of them and all seams to be OK but every time it says it is unable to find the install source. Here are the first two lines of my KS file:
Code:
install

why the Fedora 7 Repository is missing? We run a number of Fedora 7 machines in the office and when I went to configure a local repository sync of Fedora 7, i noticed that [URL] no longer has any Fedora 7 packages? After looking at a few other mirror repositories, it seems this has synced down to the mirrors as well. Would like to know if anyone knows why this is the case and if the packages will be restored?

I upgraded from fedora 11 to fedora 13 which upgraded Netbeans from 6.5 to 6.8. Now 6.8 complains that package javax.persistence does not exist. Is this a fedora problem or a Netbeans problem? I've looked in the netbeans forums and can't find any discussion of this.

I just did a clean install of F15 (32-bit) on a brand new 500 GB hard drive (partitioned and formatted in Win 7 (long 1.5 hr. format, no drive issues). Install was minimal, just Gnome desktop, and I have 894 software updates to do. I've twice started the updates and got two transaction-error dialogs, the first of which I noticed mentioned the Rawhide repository, so I added it to software sources and restarted the update. The second transaction-error dialog lists these files in details
gnome-shell-3.1.4-1.fc16.i686 requires libecal-1.2.so.9
xulrunner-6.0-2.fc15.i686 requires libhunspell-1.2.so.0
gnome-shell-3.1.4-1.fc16.i686 requires libedataserver-1.2.so.14
gnome-shell-3.1.4-1.fc16.i686 requires libebook-1.2.so.11 : gnome-shell-

but in which repository they can be found?

I installed 64-bit Fedora 12, and everything was working fine. I upgraded a bunch of packages (including, but not limited to, X and Gnome) via yum, and now I'm unable to access virtual consoles. X works fine, but Ctrl-Alt-F2, etc. leads me to a black screen.
How do I get my virtual consoles back?

I just finished upgrading the last of 3 machines from F10 to F12 using preupgrade (all i686). Except for a non-critical hplip issue, all went well with the first two machines upgraded 1 week and 3 days ago, but some python F10->F12 updates were missing on the third machine that I upgraded yesterday, leaving yum inoperable. Thanks to good yum error messages, I was able to resolve the problem (I think), but I thought I should post to check if mine is a unique or common problem, to enquire if it may have resulted from some of the python packages being in "update transit" in the repositories, and/or whether something like this can be avoided in future? Details follow:
Upgrade appeared to go well except for some dejavu font dependency issues (experienced on all three machines) and libcrypto.so.7 missing for eet-1.2.2-4... (third machine). However, there was a boot message that some python module (can't remember which) was not present for some nvidia requirement, although video driver worked fine. When testing yum: First it complained that libpython2.6.so.1.0 was not present. Since that module conflicted (identified by rpm) with various python 2.5.*f10 packages that that were still on board, I copied libpython2.6.so.1.0 (from a current f12 rpm) into /usr/lib manually. Second, yum complained that urlgrabber was not available, so rpm with the latest python-urlgrabber for f12 solved that.
Third, yum complained that pycurl was not available, so rpm with the latest python-pycurl solved that. Yum now works! and boot message is gone! I ran "yum install python-libs" to make sure that any necessary dependencies were met following my manual installation of libpython2.6.so.1.0, which resulted in a bunch of python dependencies being upgraded as a result.

I am looking for a thorough document that explains:
1) Creating a local repo
2) Using kickstart to access that repo
3) Performing a network install using kickstart
Some background: I have several racks of servers that I need to install Fedora on. These servers CANNOT be placed on the internet; hence the need for the creation of a local repo on some other machine (which will be connected to the servers via a local network). I am not sure how to create a local repo, so that one of my questions.
I'd also like to automate as much of the install as possible and kickstart is the only thing I know of for that. I am no guru with kickstart, but I have used it before to successfully install Fedora Core 6 -- I am hoping there are no great changes with the current releases of Fedora (12-14)?
A local repo of Fedora Core 6 was created by someone (some time ago) on a workstation (running FC6). This is what I've used in the past to install FC6 on previous servers (via a kickstart CD). However, I dont have the documentation on how the repo was created or how the kickstart CD was created I've gleaned some ideas ok kickstart from the pieces I've read on web, but none of it has been specific to the latest releases of Fedora.

How can I fix this? Can I remove all the updates I recently installed?

I have a multi-user machine with several network interfaces (Ethernet, if that matters). I wish to grant selected users, or groups, full access to selected network interfaces (including ability to adjust IP address and to bind to low ports, but *only* on those interfaces). It is important to me that an user/group does not such full control over other interfaces. Granting partial, or temporary, root permissions is OK; it's a friendly environment. How do I go about it?System: Linux 2.6.recent; usual Debian setup (can be adjusted if needed).

just curious if there was some discussion about reasons (not)-including Lua in stock Slackware packages ? IMHO it perfectly fits to distro's KISS philosophy, is very small and packaging maintenance is very easy (only glibc dependency, simple compilation and installation proces). Slackware contains programming language implementations of Common Lisp, Guile Scheme, Ada 95 which I find more exotic then Lua in these days. I know there are some histroical reasons and keeping continuity but anyway ...

I have a working Centos 5.4 (== Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4) kickstart installation working with pxe boot.I am now trying to do the same kickstart installation but from a SCSI harddrive on the hardware box itself. In other words, the system already has an older distribution on it, and it has a formatted LVM partition with free space. I expect to upload an initrd, vmlinux, ks.cfg at the top of this partition, edit the grub.conf with something like so:

Just got Ubuntu (latest, greatest) installed. IIRC I selected 'auto loggin' from the install CD, but I'm unsure how this works. I have a user loggin 'ray' and a PW that's all OK. In the GUI, if I want to do something heavy it asks me for a PW which tells me that I'm 'root' at that time. But at the CL prompt I can't log in as root with no PW nor with the PW I use as 'ray'. BTW, is there somewhere I can bitch about the install CD? It was not an unpleasant experience, but I think it could be a bit better.

I'm trying to install CentOS 5.5 from harddrive using a kickstart file. Kickstart file is read correctly, it contains the following 3 lines (+ additional config):
install
harddrive --partition=sda11 --dir=repos/CentOS/5.5/isos/i386
repo --name="CentOS-5.5 - Updates" --baseurl=hd:sda11:repos/CentOS/5.5/updates/i386
I've downloaded both CentOS-5.5-i386-bin-DVD.iso and CentOS-5.5-i386-bin-1of7.iso, but anaconda (the installer) asks: - What partition and directory on that partition holds the CD (iso9660) images for CentOS? ...
VT3 gives these messages:
INFO: partition /dev/sda11 selected
INFO: mounting device sda11 for hard drive install
