First, my mistake was unchecking the option to boot into Ubuntu through GRUB customizer. Woops.All I could do at this point was boot into Vista, that's about it.So, I boot into Vista, wiped the Linux partitions, and restored the ability to boot into Vista with a Vista CD. Then I reinstalled Ubuntu 10.10, no problems here. Its just that when I boot up and get into the GRUB menu, I can't boot into my actual Vista. The option for it isn't present. I can boot into Ubuntu, Memory Test, and Vista's Recovery, but not Vista itself. Here is my GRUB cfg, haven't touched it or anything.

I just successfully installed ubuntu 10.10 Meerkat Maverik parallel to manufacturer installed Windows 7 Professional on a newly bought ThinkPad t410. All works find just that on the boot screen instead of 1 Windows partition (usually something like "Windows 7 loader on sda1") I find two Windows partitions. Now, I know that Thinkpads have a recovery partition. Funny is though that both "Windows 7 loader on sda1/2" login to what seems the identical Windows (not one of them the "normal" and the other some form of a recovery).
I've installed Gnewsense on my sda1 and I no longer have the option to load Ubuntu 10.04 on sda2 at boot. As Gnewsense is ext 3 I cannot access my files in my Ubuntu Home dir. Can I simply switch my boot to sda2? It will solve my problem for the medium term.

The part5 piece of this cannot be changed in yast. I selected that line, edited to /dev/sda5, and it came back the same way.
The part6 seems to be coming from /etc/fstab, changed it by hand to /dev/sda6, but it may not stay that way the next time yast runs. Similar changes to menu.lst did not survive a reboot, defaulting back to the "part5" syntax.
Is there some way to employ "/dev/sdX' syntax using yast, or is this one of those cases where one must work around the "help" of the easy configuration tool?
I'll avoid the details of what got me here and get right to the point.I have two primary partitions on 1 hard drive. sda1 is my fat32 recovery partition and sda2 is my ntfs windows xp partition. I need to know how to change the order around so xp is sda1 by using the terminal in the ubuntu live cd.
Ubuntu Linux 10.04 LTS -Partition dev/sda2 is formatted as FAT32 and mounted as /d. Boot found a problem with it; the original and backup copies of the boot sector don't match.dosfsck refuses to fix it. I use 'dos fsck /dev/sda2" and it offers to copy one to the other, but whatever I pick it refuses to write to the drive. I use "dosfsck -a /dev/sda2" and again it refuses to write to the drive. I had a Centos install that corrupted the boot and would only boot to GRUB. After about a week of trying linux rescue and various measures I gave up and installed a fresh copy of Centos on /dev/hda which is a 40 GB drive. All my data was on /dev/sda which I did not overwrite and is a 1TB SATA drive. I added sda to the LVM of hda now and is recognized as part of Partition 2 - using the GUI Logical Volume Management. I used GParted to delete my first partition,then moved my second partition to the beginning of the disk. That all went well, but the partition table still shows an unused entry of 0 blocks listed at partition 1. How do I get rid of that entry and make my old second partition sda1?

sda2 and sda3 are the Vista partitions. sda2 is a recovery partition and sda3 is the main partition. All data is safely copied from sda3 and now I want to reformat them for SUSE. I not bothered about partition resizing i.e. I am happy to just have the sda2/sda3 space available to SUSE and mount them somewhere.
1) Do I need to do anything about the boot table first or can I just reformat sda2 & sda3?
2) How should I format sda2/sda3? I'm guessing I need to unmount them and then format. Should I use ext4 or something else? Which command/tool should I use?
I'm migrating my OpenSuse 11.3 (which was update from 11.2, 11.1 ........ ) to a new hard drive. My partitions were reiserfs and in the migration I'm "converting" them to ext4, the conversion process is simple and it works fine for all of them except the root one: 1) I create a new partition on the new hard disk (bigger than the original one) 2) I format it with ext4 3) I copy all the data with cp -a from the original partition to the new one

I've booted it also with SuperGrub2 disk and the same thing happened, so I think it's not a grub problem but I don't wknow why it tried to mount the root partition as reiserfs.
Trying to complete a RAID 1 mirror on a running system and have run into a wall at the last part. I can't add the active physical disk to the mirror. This is on a Centos 5.6 x86_64 system. Anybody know where to go from here? I've tried adding the nodmraid line to the kernel boot line with no luck. Tried removing the logical volumes from LVM, but it won't let me. Not a Linux newbie, but haven't set up a RAID in a long time.

I switch on the PC and it loads the Grub splash screen. However, it does not automatically boot the top entry after two seconds as it's supposed to and just hangs. I hit enter to boot it and it attempts to but after a few seconds gives me the error "unable to mount file system....a maintenance shell will be started"

I am running the latest suse release downloaded directly from their website. I ran the installation after buring the dvd and everything seemed to be working fine. after the installation i ran updates and used it for a little bit. When i shut it down that night and went to restart it I got an error that stated the OS wasnt there. I then went through the installation and everything and it retained the information from the installation before (web history etc.) but for some reason every time I reboot or shut it down the system is not able to read the startup information from the hard drive and will not come on without me re installing it.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Windows XP installed on my laptop. Usually when booting, I get the GRUB 2 menu and I can boot into either Ubuntu or XP.I was playing around with EasyBCD, then after trying to remove it I was unable to boot into Windows, I used a Windows 2000 CD recovery console to fix the MBR (using: fixboot and fixmbr).Now Windows starts up when I power on, but I don't get the grub menu anymore with an Ubuntu option. If I boot from the Ubuntu Live CD and try to mount my Ubuntu partition (/dev/sda5) I get this error:

After installing karmic with Grub2 I am unable to boot into Archlinux partition. Grub2 has removed the last line of the Archlinux boot stanza! It used to read:-

Following the Grub2 tutorials I have tried editing /etc/grub.d/40_custom as follows:-

But no luck. Only way into Archlinux is to get into the edit shell and manually add the missing line and remove other stuff not needed. I have spent hours trying to resolve this issue and I am fairly p----d off

Have been running ubuntu for sometime now and love its functionality...However since a recent update have the following issues..When I power on the laptop I get the toshiba logo followed by grub loading with the message ' invalid enviroment block" "unable to load default boot entries". When I then try to run the laptop off a LiveCd, the ubuntu splash screen appears with the loading process bar (horizontal line) displayed..however it then appears to display a black screen with no further activity..Now all of this is via an external monitor as my laptop screen shows no activity right from the very start with just a blank screen....so am really stuck here wondering if its a harware/software issue or a combination of both...
I have a Sony VPCZ13C5E with Intel Core i7 M640 @ 2.8GHz and Windows 7 Prof 64 bit. It has 4 x 122GB SSD's in one Volume type Raid 0 using Intel Rapid Storage Technology.
The installation prog did not offer to install alongside an existing (Win 7) system, however after installation I was able still to boot Win 7 from the Grub Menu, but the Linux option just gives the black screen of death.
Booting from the 10.10 LiveCD and running sudo fdisk - l gives "unable to seek on /dev/sda". Also I have had a message "unknown filesystem type 'isw_raid_member' although I have forgotten where that came from!
The LiveCD shows that the filesystem does seem to have installed OK on the ext4 partion of 100Gb which I had kept for it, however it will not boot.

I have tried sudo mount /dev/mapper/isw_dijbjabefg_Volume07 /mnt and it gives no errors.
I then tried sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda which gave no errors but when I reboot and choose Linux the result is still the black screen of death.
I understand that the problem may be one of Ubuntu drivers having to catch up with the latest technology but given that Ubuntu can partition the swap file and the ext4 system I seem to be so close.
