Im trying to shrink a 80 Gb ntfs partition. but when i clicked the shrink option the partition is like this:
"sda1(ntfs,0 mb)".
how to free up space in creating custom layout.
Using a small hard drive (180 GB) dual booting windows XP for gaming and Ubuntu 9.10 for my other stuff during install I didnt know how much of each partition i would use, so i did 50-50 1 for ext3 and one for NTFSHowever after awhile it seems I have run out of space on my NTFS and have tons of unused space on my ext3.What I am wanting to do is shrink some of that ext3 down and give it it NTFS, I did a little searching and found a couple of old posts but I was a little sketchey on em. Simply looking for some personal Methods or Tools you have used and a starting point of how to use them.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have just over 20GB of empty space on C:. When I click it under disk-management, the window comes up and says I can only resize it 192 MB less than what it is. But I have 20GB free. Any ideas on what is wrong? I also have this odd 9.56GB partition that is empty. DM says it's "EISA configuration"...whatever that is. I am planning to allocate about 10GB for F11 if this pans out ok.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI got a new computer (core i7, 6gb ram, 500gb hdd).I first installed Windows 7, because I remembered how Fedora 9 created a dual-boot screen nicely, while if I installed XP on a system with Fedora 9 it would just take over the boot and boot to XP.Anyway, so Windows 7 is installed, and I got the Fedora 11 DVD install.I partitioned the hdd as thus (on win7 installation): 93gb windows system, 300gb media partition, 90gb unformatted.When I boot the installation and select the "use free space" I get an error that there isn't enough free space on the disks to create the layout.I also tried to create a custom layout, but after a few errors I gave up on that what should I do to get Fedora 11 installed?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have several partitions on my hard drive, and like to use the 'Create Custom Layout' option during the installation process, to make sure that I don't loose any of my existing partitions or the data on them.
I have attempted a minimal F12 installation from Fedora 12 DVD. But the 'Create Custom Layout' option is not an option in the menu.
How do I install F12 and tell anaconda exactly which partitions I want to use and format?
My current working partition layout is shown in the attached screenshot.
I want to use the following custom partition layout during the initial F12 installation:

This allows me to share existing partitions between my current working F10 root partition, and the newly-installed F12 root partition. So if there are problems with the new F12 installation, I still have a working F10 system to fall back on.
The other partitions with data on will be mounted when the intiall installation has been completed
I am trying to install fedora15, my devices are as follows:
/dev/sda1- contains windows recovery
/dev/sda2- contains windows vista
/dev/sda3- free space
/dev/sda4- where fedora10 is existing.
Basically I want to scrap the fedora 10 in /dev/sda4 and install fed15 on the place (ext3). During the installation process fedora asked me, Which type of installation you want? I choose 'create custom layout'.
Then in the next window that appeared I choose /dev/sda4. Then it gives me four options like
Create Edit Delete Reset
I want to know what does this Delete mean. What will it do, will is erase all the older partitions within /dev/sda4 i made for fedora10 (previously I made three partitions /boot, swap, /) or will erase /dev/sda4 itself. I am scared to continue installation further.

NTFS recovery partition
I tried to install linux, as there was a problem with XP overwriting grub, I chose write grub to /dev/sda8 (which is where the linux install was appearing earlier).
I guess this borked the filesystem somehow. Now the NTFS data partition and the swap space are appearing as one free space.
Well actually before that some linux live CDs (including gparted were seeing the entire drive as unpartitioned). I had to go into XP and delete the /ext4 partitions.
Is there any way for me to recover the NTFS data partition ?
I now have Windows XP installed, with 30GB of free space on the end of my hard rive. If I install linux there, will it cause Windows XP to fail? Last time I tried this, it says hal.dll was not found. However, that may have been caused by having five partitions. Do u think its safe now that I'll only have 4? Will Windows XP fail if I put in a partition in the free space?

I just downloaded the new fedora and proceed to install it into a free space of 11GB on my HDD. As such the partitioner is unable to create more than 1 partitioneven if free space is available, it reports not enough free space seen if its present. As such it can create only one of the three partitions i.e., swap or / or /home duw to which cannot proceed ahead.' Some more details me running Xp as the other OS on my system.

I found the following code for a custom dvorak international keyboard layout here, but it directs me to copy this code into the folder /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/pc, a folder which does not seem to exist in 9.10 or 9.04.

im trying to shrink my vista partition with gparted inside ubuntu. I run gparted (and yes i have ntfsprogs) but when i select the ntfs partition and select move/resize it brings up free space preceding... new size... and free space following.so when i input the new size the resize/move button greys out and when i change the freespace following it just puts back my original new size and back and forth.from what i have read i need to run the gparted livecd and go from there. is this true? i know how to do it with diskpart in windows, how to in ubuntu and eventually get rid of windows.my system is 64-bit. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have serwer Debian with my website. My provider splited the disc into 5GB partition for / and 495GB partition for /var. Everything was going ok for over two years but now I don't have enough memory on /. I'd like to increase the partition but the problem is that /var is just next to it so I can't easily change the end of the first one. I need some safe solution. It might be even just shrinking partition for /var, adding new one after if it helps anyhow (I have about 450GB free memory).

I have nearly 200GB of space free on the HD with my linux main EXT4 partition, and I'm wondering if I can convert a large part of this to a new NTFS partition that I can use for my windows XP paralell install?
Basically, what do I have to do to resize and create the new partition and how do I get windows to recognize it?
I have a notebook with dual boot windows and Ubuntu 10.10 on a 80 Gig hard drive. The windows XP partition was initially installed and took up the whole drive (dev/sda1). I then freed up some space and created and installed Ubuntu (/dev/sda6) and swap (/dev/sda5) on an extended partition (/dev/sda2). Initially I only freed up 3.6 Gig which I thought would be more than enough but not any more. I cannot even install the updates as there is only 100 Meg left which is not enough. I then freed up more space (8 gig) from the windows partition to allocate to Ubuntu.
My problem is that I can't seem to find to now allocate this "freed-up" space to Ubuntu? I realise that I have to boot-up from a the Ubuntu live disk so that the hard drive is not mounted to allow changes but I'm still unable to change the partitions. I'm using GParted.
The drive looks like this currently:
[...NTFS] [...Unallocated] [...Extended{(ext4),(linux-swap)}]
I'm a new user to Linux & Ubuntu. My system is Windows 7 in one partition, one partition has free space to load my data, another partition is present to load Ubuntu. Can somebody please tell me how to go about the installation process when I'm already having an OS preinstalled?

However, being uncertain of the usefulness and friendliness of it all, I decided to keep my Windows 7 partition untouched and just make a 30 Gb partition to "try out" Linux. As it turns out, it's been some 2 months since I last booted Windows and was now wondering if there's a way to "steal" some space from that W7 partition and add it to my Ubuntu one without messing up files. Some kind of major defragmentation, leaving an empty part of the disk which I could "attach" to my Ubuntu partition. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS version.

Between the original partition (c:) and the free space, there is a partition that contains the laptop mfg's factory image. I want to recover that free space back to the original c: partition. The problem is that fdisk -l displays start & end sectors of the partitions and I need to know blocks. How do I determine the block number after the last partition to start writing this image?

Since the kernel of F11 live-cd can't recognize my video card, I have to run it in text mode. I also have to run "liveinst" in text mode and the install progess seemed ok. But on the partitioning selection step, there is no "custom layout" option! I rembered that in the graphic mode there was such option. How can I find it in the text mode?

I have decided that my partition table does not meet my needs Barrymore, and I want to shrink the "/" partition by 80GB, and then create another file system on that space. I did some research on-line, and I'm not sure which way is the easiest and more secure way to perform the change with out putting the "/" file system on risk.

When booting back in to my windows partition it doesnt recognize the free space instead it thinks the hard drive is still full even though i deleted the data.Not to sure as to why this has happened, as im sure i have deleted stuff of this hard drive before from my linux partition.Any help would be greatly appreciated as my 70gb hard drive is full with only 20gb of data to show for it
View 2 Replies View RelatedUpgrading fc10 to fc12 with a fresh install. Made several partitions with fdisk. mkfs failed."Bad superblock at block 1.Need blocks 1 to 4 to create file system. Aborting.Tried mkfs -c, badblocks, dumpe2fs,no joy. No backup superblocks,because I had already fdisked.
Repartitioned starting at cyl 10. mkfs worked fine then. FC12 installer still could not initialise disk, however. I guess it looks at block 1, to initialise before it offers diskdruid, so it never gets to see my custom partition layout. How can I force the installer to accept my custom partition layout? Is a bad superblock at block 1 a fatal, throw-the-disk-away fault?
I am trying to create an empty file based on the remaining hard disk space. The problem is that when I create a file that is 1 GB large, the df command shows the remaining space to be only 12 kb smaller than it was before the file was created.

I have around 30gb of free space in my partition table immediately before the Linux partition. I want to resize my linux partition to take up this space.
I tried booting with live cd, sucessfully umounted the hard drive but found I could not resize the partition. On clicking the 'edit size' button, partition manager recognised the free space before the partition but when i reduced this, the 'ok' button was greyed out. (it was not greyed out for the windows partition so I could, in theory, increase the windows partition to take up the free space but this is not what i wanted to do).
I am pretty sure that I had managed to unmount the drive correctly as the padlock symbol had dissapeared (I took the attached screenshot, which does show the lock symbol, after rebooting into my normal system).
Anyone got any ideas as to why it wont allow this? There is no reason why i can resize the partition to take up the free space BEFORE it is there?
My debian 5 is up and running smoothly and act as file-server in the middle of windows network jungle using samba the only problem is, after backup an external hdd (213 GB) to my /home partition, I end up with message say that I'm running out free space. Fyi my debian installed on 1TB SATA disk, and I separate my /home partition from system what happen to my free space ? here is screenshot of my disk, using disk usage analyzer: is there is a way to get my space back or something missing on my setup.or I have to reinstall my debian and use LVM when partitioning my disk?
