Red Hat / Fedora :: Access A Partition Within LV

Feb 9, 2011

I have several disks in one large raid5 array, which is /dev/md127.This one raid device is using lvm2, and is a physical volume in a volume group called lvm-raid.I then have many logical volumes within this volume group for various things, including virtualization.I have a VM (using kvm for full virtualization, set up using the graphical virt-manager) which uses one of these logical volumes as its disk. From the host, this logical volume is /dev/mapper/lvm--raid-lv_webserver, with a major number of 253 and a minor number of 6.
ical volume.

I am thinking I need to use mknod to create /dev/mapper/lvm--raid-lv_webserver1, but I cannot figure out the appropriate major and minor numbers to use. When I test is with a mount command, it always tells me "mount: /dev/mapper/lvm--raid-lv_webserver1 is not a valid block device". how do I access partitions within a logical volume?

Fedora :: Knoppix Can't Access Main Partition?

Feb 28, 2010

I would like to try to install the nvidia drivers on my F12 box.fter two failed attempts, one of which required me to completely wipe F12 and reinstall (i.e. right royal pain), I would like to be more careful for the next attempt. The problem is that if I try to upgrade to nvidia drivers, and they don't work, I need a way of backing the installation. But, if the driver upgrade fails, then the OS won't boot. I tried going in with a Knoppix live DVD, but it could only access Fedora's /boot partition, not the main OS mounted on /. Therefore, I couldn't change undo the selection of the nvidia driver and back out.The output of mount is:

Code:
# mount
/dev/mapper/vg_machine-lv_root on / type ext4 (rw)

Fedora Hardware :: Access Partition In Fedora 14?

I'm new to Linux platform. I was using Windows XP on my 500GB HDD. I wanted to use any Linux os, so yesterday I removed XP & installed Fedora 14. Now I'm not able to access one of the partition (380GB).

Fedora Installation :: Format A Windows Partition So Can Easily Access It?

Jan 22, 2011

My old computer came with two disks, with Windows XP on one. I installed Fredora on the other.
I also resized the c: partition on the first disk and added a second partition which I formatted as fat32.
I then mounted that partition with its entry in /etc/fstab such that I could write to it as myself.

I have a new computer, 64 bit and running Windows 7, which I want to organize roughly the same way. I will install Fedora 14 on its seond disk. I've shrunk the c: partition under Windows using Disk Management. I want to create a 100 Gb D: partition on the same drive in the remaining space, and I want to be able to access both c: and D: for reading and writing by root and I want to be able to access the d: drive for reading and writing also by myself. Since it is a 64 bit machine, my choices for formatting the d: drive are HTFS or exFAT. Does it matter which I choose so that I can do what I want? How does Fedora treat exFAT?

Can anyone remind me which packages I need to add in order to be able to read NTFS file systems from Fedora? Can I also write to such a file system as root?

Can I write to such a file system as myself if I mount it properly?

Jul 24, 2009

Anybody know how to make an ext3 or 4 partition start up at boot with only the owner and its group having read and write access permissions.I don't want 'others' to have folder access. This is what i have done. / etc/fstab:/dev/sdb5/media/Data ext4 owner 1 2 The folder starts on the boot since it has been allocated a folder as u can see. Next i changed the the ownership and the group ownership of the folder:chown johnny:johnny /media/DataThe problem is that other users can few my partition since 'others' have read access. How do i change that to zero access?

Ubuntu :: Swap Partition Access / Cant See That Partition

I've recently just installed ubuntu 11.04 but seem to have made a big mistake. During the install process I was asked to specify a location to be used for swap. Not really understanding what this meant I chose another partition on my drive with some free space but also a lot of my data. Needless to say I now cant see that partition. Is there anyway for me to access it? or to at least recover the information I need from there? its about a 200gig partition, and it used to be ntfs.

Fedora :: Shrinking Disk Partition In Fedora Makes NTSF Partition Unusable

Aug 5, 2011

I am completely new to Linux in general, and have recently downloaded Fedora 15 KDE spin. I tried dual-booting between Windows 7 and Fedora by shrinking one of my Windows partitions (I have two, this partition not containing the Windows installation). I tried shrinking it to 30 GB less than the total space available on the partition, and after pressing continue, received an error (which I unfortunately dismissed quickly and can't remember). In the file manager, Fedora showed that my partition changed from 1.3Tb to 1.2 Tb, but I couldn't access it. Upon rebooting into Windows, I still can't access it, receiving a "format drive before use" popup and then error stating that it is possibly of a different filesystem or corrupt.

Unfortunately, I stupidly didn't backup any of my data (which I will be sure to remember to do in the future). I installed EASEUS Partition Master 8.0.1 Home Edition, which states that my drive is still of NTFS filesystem and has the total space it should. However, upon clicking "check drive," it states there are no errors and when trying to "explore files," it doesn't find any (yet it shows the correct amount of used and unused space). I then tried running TestDisk, but only allows me to check my media drive E, which is my dvd drive that has my Fedora Live CD in it (which cannot be ejected manually or through Windows, an error stating it cannot be ejected). I didn't go through with TestDisk for my DVD drive because I needed to verify the type of partition (which to my knowledge shouldn't even exist). It shows 700 something MiB / 600 something MiB. Although I have decent general knowledge about computers, I am a complete novice when it comes to doing something like this.

Hardware :: Cannot Access LVM Partition

Mar 4, 2011

I just made some partition changes to my laptop (wiped ntfs partition clean) and afterward my / file system will not mount. My partition layout is still the same but somehow my Logical Volume doesn't realize it's a logical volume anymore. What's stranger, though, is that my /boot partition in the same LVG is unaffected and I can boot just fine. I just get a failure when it comes time to mount the / partition.

Of course I recently deleted my / backup and all I have is a /home backup now. This means I don't know how the heck I'm supposed to find the partition metadata or UUID. I would gladly pay for software to get this fixed now because I need the information on that drive. I have to use this laptop for my Java and C++ classes and I'm already 2 days late on a C++ project.

Code:
[root@localhost ~]# dd if=/dev/sda6 of=/tmp/LVM2.dd bs=512 count=48 | strings
48+0 records in
48+0 records out
24576 bytes (25 kB) copied, 0.314681 s, 78.1 kB/s

General :: Possible To Have Boot-able Partition That Can Also Access Via VM

May 14, 2011

I'm hoping to do something similar to the way you can install Windows on a Mac's 'Boot Camp' partition, but then you can also open that partition as a Virtual Machine using Parallels or VMware from within OS X.That way for the quick stuff, you just fire up the VM, but for the more 'intense' things, you can boot into Windows natively. The difference here being I want to use Ubuntu instead of Windows. (Don't care if I use Apple's 'boot camp' mechanism or a third-party boot manager either.)

Ubuntu :: How To Access Windows Partition

Oct 18, 2010

I have a desktop, a cellphone. I do NOT HAVE a disk drive, a USB stick or anything of the sort.

The desktop has two operating systems on a single hard drive: Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7. I need to get internet access in Windows 7.

The cellphone is a Galaxy S Vibrant, and is tethered so that I can connect to the internet through it. In Ubuntu, the tether is automatically supported. I just shove a USB cable between the cellphone and the phone and I've got internet in Linux. But in Windows, the tether needs drivers. I can't connect to my phone in Windows without them.

So, I pretty much have to put the installer in Windows from Linux, so I can run it, have internet in Windows and not get fired tomorrow.

I have $0, so picking up (or borrowing) something I can use to talk between the two computers is not an option.

But in Ubuntu, I do not see my Windows partition. It's not in media and it's not in mnt.

What can I do to get a damn file over to Windows?

Note in bold and italic to show that it's important: NTFS-Config only shows my Ubuntu drive, it seems.

EDIT: Oh boy, I screwed up.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Access Extended Partition

Dec 28, 2010

Two days ago I want to expand the free room for my C: partition on my laptop, i thought that just shrink the D: partition and expand the C: and the problem solved, but it's not solved, the C: remains and can't be expanded. so i merge the D: again, but the D: status become an extended partition

After all, next morning I boot into Ubuntu and my D: are not available in "Places" menu in Ubuntu just the C: partition, so I boot from Win7 and run CHKDSK /f to my D: partition, but it's gave me no effects

Code:
sudo fdisk -l
in terminal and my D: listed as "Extended" in System type.

In my Win7, everything is alright

Ubuntu :: How Can I Access NTFS Partition

I have dual-boot XP/Karmic.I have an external HDD for backup. One partition is NTFS for the XP stuff. The second partition is ext4.I was practicing with the SystemRestoreCD, which provides a Linux root console.I can create and delete directories on the ext4 partition, but not on the NTFS partition. The error message says "read-only file system".I tried to use chmod and chown to change permissions and owner.I assumed that as root, I could do anything. How can I access the NTFS partition, and do anything that I need to do?All my current XP stuff on the HDD was backed up from within XP, using standard software (Cobian Backup), and normal user privileges. But I want to practice for when my XP OS is damaged.

General :: How To Access Partition Files

Sep 12, 2010

it all started with my eagerness to have a triple boot system with XP/Win7/Ubuntu 10.04. I had xp on a PC with an Asus M/B with a single 320GB SATA HDD.Then I installed Win 7 (probably into a logical drive). It went well. Then after searching for some help I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on to another partition. Fine up to here, but when I saw I was able to access other partition files from Linux but not the other way. Then thru some help from some forums I tried to free some space from the Linux Partition and make it as a shared drive between Win and Linux.

In this process I used GParted live CD to rearrange partitions and tried to format the unallocated space it is showing "you cannot create a new volume in this unallocated space because the disk is already containing the maximum number of partitions."

Debian :: Unable To Access Ntfs Partition?

May 21, 2010

I recently formated my harddrive and instead of theld fat32 partition for windows partition I used ntfs. I am mounting this partition in /media/windows in debian linux. But it shows a cross (x) symbol above the folder and says I don't have the permission to access it. the permission on the folder is (drwx_ _ _ _ _ _ ) and it is owned by root. So I changed it to my user name -- sid by doing the followingsudo chown -R sid:sid /media/windowsHere are my questions1) Now it allows me to access the folders but all the files like pdf or photos have a cross on right top corner and it says access denied. Is this because of ntfs since with fat32 I didn't have this problem.

2) Also I have a /data (ext4) partiton which is a common partition for datafiles between Ubuntu and Debian. It has the permission -- drwxr_xr_x . I am trying to write to this partition and save files but it doesnot allow me to do it. do I have to make chmod 777 to do that?3) How do I make sure that both windows and /data partition are writable right from the beginning at the boot time.

Debian Multimedia :: Access 2nd Partition With Dolphin - KDE

Jan 20, 2011

I have recently installed Debian 6.0 Testing with KDE4.4.5. I have two fixed ext3 partitions on the hard drive but when I click on the second partition in Dolphin the following error message appears: "org.freedesktop.hal.device.volume.permission denied, refusing to mount /dev/hda5 for uid=1000". I have searched the kde forum and other sites and have found reference to it on other distributions. It appears to be a hal configuration problem. KMint kde 4.4 seems to have resolved the problem as my other partition is running the same kde version and I can access the debian partitions. Perhaps I should just manually mount the partitions when needed!
