I have a partition on my hard drive sda3, that I use to make backup of files, I have to loggin as root evverytime I want to copy a file on that partition. What can I do to make that media accesible?
View 9 RepliesI just bought a new hard drive so that I could convert my XP-only machine into an XP-Ubuntu-Windows 7 triple boot machine.Since the drive is absurdly huge (1 TB) I wouldn't mind throwing ReactOS into the mixtoo.I just found out that master boot records are limited to 4 entries, meaning 4 primary partitions. I had Windows XP set up on my old drive as a boot partition, a program files partition and a media partition. Since I really didn't want to install XP from scratch, I cloned this setup on my new drive.
This leaves me one MBR partition entry for installing Windows 7, Ubuntu and ReactOS. I'd like to avoid having to install XP from scratch like the plague, partly because it's supposed to be a safety net in case things go wrong with my other OS's and because I've invested a lot of time getting it set up exactly the way I like it.Here are the options I've considered and why I don't like them:Install Windows 7 on my media partition. This would work, but I prefer to keep my media partition completely separate from any OS, so that I can reformat an OS partition without affecting my media partition at all.
Use wubi or something to install Ubuntu in the same partition as something else. Again, this is brittle.Move all my media to a logical drive on an extended partition. Create another logical drive on this extended partition for Ubuntu. The problem here is that extended partitions are rather brittle--if you nuke one, it renders the rest useless.Just put the old drive back in my computer and run XP off it. Use the new one for the other OS's. The problem here is that the old drive is slower and uses extra power, generates extra heat, etc.
I have a bunch of shared media on my HD that I want everyone on my Computer to be able to access. I want to put that media in everyones music/video folders without having redundant data. Is there anyway I can put it on another partition and store the media there but access it from the media folders.
Also is there any way to enable anonymous access via ftp to the media folder.
I have all my music/photos etc. on a different partition to my Ubuntu and Windows partitions.
However, I can't make any changes like deleting files/renaming etc. because I'm not the partition's 'owner' or i'm not in root.
change the ownership of the partition so I can change files from Ubuntu.

I tried fiddling with se-linux, manually mounting the media, playing around with file permissions and stuff .. but nothing sufficed.
Things work fine when I set anon_root to a directory on the local hdd but and also with the default /var/ftp but as soon as I set anon_root=/media/disk_label/ftp ..
I'm using 32 bit (i686) Debian Lenny. The multimedia repo is installed, w32codecs is installed, VLC and Kaffeine are both installed. I was trying to listen to some audio files on the NPR site (link will follow) and find that I can't open the files with anything I have installed. The Linux version of the Realplayer isn't in the repo (and I don't really want to install it after some of the things I've read about it) but I gotta have my NPR and there's no way I'll EVER go back to a M$ OS. How can I listen to these files without downloading them and then uploading them to a media conversion site? I'm usually very good with google but this one has me stumped.

This setup works fine for Windows so it hasn't been a problem until now. The server is Ubuntu and I share the files using SAMBA. I know (very little) about NFS but I need SAMBA for the Windows clients so there is no NFS setup.I can see the SAMBA shares in Konqueror but I cannot open SAMBA shares with Amarok, XMMS, or anything else. I think I need to mount the SAMBA shares on OpenSUSE (11.2) to access them with Amarok, etc. I would then include these shares in the fstab file on my OpenSUSE box to include them at boot. Is this correct?

Not really understanding what this meant I chose another partition on my drive with some free space but also a lot of my data. Needless to say I now cant see that partition. I've hit a wall here; I'm attempting to find some way by which to view files and cd into directories on a device mounted read-only. So I need the permissions to read, write, execute (and the same with directories), but chmodding is out of the question because I don't want to alter the drive one iota.
I guess what I could do--what I was thinking of initially--was to dupe the whole drive and then mess with permissions. This wouldn't affect the original (actually I'm working on a duplicate of the original, but I'm treating it as if it were the original) but I was hoping for something that would maintain data integrity. This is a forensic application and not altering the data is very important.

I want the downstairs pc to act as a file server and to run my torrent client, it is running Ubuntu desktop version and has xbmc installed too for use with the tv. The upstairs htpc has xbmc live on and will access the media from the file server. What I am looking to do is to be able to log into my ubuntu machine remotely from a laptop running windows so I can manage the files and add torrents for download etc, but for this to be a complete remote session, rather than taking control over what is already being shown on the downstairs pc, like VNC does in windows.
I have two user accounts set up on the main ubuntu machine, the admin account and a media user account which is set to go straight to xbmc after log in. Also how can I make sure that the media drives are automatically mounted to allow access if the admin user is not logged in?
After several times install & reinstall,i got a stable dual boot vista / ubuntu 10.10.,but i can't access or even see my windows partition from ubuntu,i installed my dual boot with wubu this time,in previous installation when i didn't use wubi , i didn't have such a problem & windows partition with all my files in it (windows files,media ,etc,) was easily accessible from "places" on ubuntu . View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I get my partitions listed in the terminal or in GParted they go up sequentially to sda7 as they should. The media folder in my file system shows the other dual boot OS and a data disk partition, both mounted, which is correct. All good. But there is a third strange folder titled sda8 however I have no such partition. /etc/fstab shows no sda8 either. When I open /media/sda8, it shows no files, says its empty and lists an empty available space that equals the empty space on the Linux OS partition in which the folder sits. But no pie chart shown, and it belongs to root. I changed the permission and found I can save files to it.

Here is were the stupid part takes over... I right clicked on the desktop icon for the device and selected Properties. From there I selected the Volume tab and in there I changed the mounting point to '/media/Movies' It accepted it and said the changed would take place when I unmounted it and remounted it. However, when I did this it now says it cannot be mounted as it says mount_point contains invalid characters usually /
Unfortunately, now I cannot get back into the properties to remove my error.
How can I change the mountpoint of my partition /media/documents to /documents.This is a partition of sdb and a fixed disk.The reason is that /media/ sometimes creates ghostdirectories while /Windows/C never does so, programmes writing/reading from this partition therfore don't work if a ghostdir_ exists.(BTW Suse is on sdb5 and sdb6. on sda is windows and used to be Ubuntu, the Suse-swap is sda5. Windows is out of use.)

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a desktop, a cellphone. I do NOT HAVE a disk drive, a USB stick or anything of the sort.
The desktop has two operating systems on a single hard drive: Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7. I need to get internet access in Windows 7.
The cellphone is a Galaxy S Vibrant, and is tethered so that I can connect to the internet through it. In Ubuntu, the tether is automatically supported. I just shove a USB cable between the cellphone and the phone and I've got internet in Linux. But in Windows, the tether needs drivers. I can't connect to my phone in Windows without them.
So, I pretty much have to put the installer in Windows from Linux, so I can run it, have internet in Windows and not get fired tomorrow.
I have $0, so picking up (or borrowing) something I can use to talk between the two computers is not an option.
But in Ubuntu, I do not see my Windows partition. It's not in media and it's not in mnt.
What can I do to get a damn file over to Windows?
Note in bold and italic to show that it's important: NTFS-Config only shows my Ubuntu drive, it seems.

I can mount the windows partition within ubuntu from Nautilus with Read/Write access,but not able to do so for Fedora partition. Fedora partition is getting mounted from Nautilus,but when i try to access the home folder of any Fedora user,it gives the permission denied error.

After all, next morning I boot into Ubuntu and my D: are not available in "Places" menu in Ubuntu just the C: partition, so I boot from Win7 and run CHKDSK /f to my D: partition, but it's gave me no effects

The second partition is ext4.I was practicing with the SystemRestoreCD, which provides a Linux root console.I can create and delete directories on the ext4 partition, but not on the NTFS partition. The error message says "read-only file system".I tried to use chmod and chown to change permissions and owner.I assumed that as root, I could do anything.How can I access the NTFS partition, and do anything that I need to do?All my current XP stuff on the HDD was backed up from within XP, using standard software (Cobian Backup), and normal user privileges. View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.10 to dual-boot with XP Home on my Asus 1005HA netbook. The main hard drive is an OCZ Vertex 2 SSD. I've tried all the common tools for accessing the Ubuntu partition from inside XP, but none of them appears to work. Ext2IFS didn't let me assign drive letters - in fact, it doesn't seem to detect the Ubuntu partition at all. The Ext2IFS config tool in Control Panel looks like this (the SSD is 120 GB, and the Linux partition is 10GB as I recall):
explore2fs doesn't even start. Linux Reader can't open any drive, including flash drives and external HDDs.
I can't think of anything irregular about my system except the SSD. Could that be it?
