View 1 RepliesI've been using Ubuntu 10.10 for just under a week. Recently, a partition called 'Data' has disappeared, and all my music and documents along with it. The folder is not to be seen in Places or on my desktop. My only way of finding it is to go to terminal. But when I try to open it there I get an error saying I don't have permission to read it. In Puppy Linux and SliTaz I can easily find the partition and read it. What should I do to bring it back in Ubuntu?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to access a share across the net. the share is a disk "fat32" which I mounted using "vfat users,rw,exec 0 0." However, after I created the samba user "smbpasswd -a user" I'm still unable to access the share across the net. ports are open, and entry has been made in smb.conf for share. But I'm having problems giving permission to smb user. the share it is mounted on /media/share, and I've tried everything from
chmod -R ug+rwx /media/share
chmod -R ugo+rwx /media/share
chown -R user /media/share
and I always get unable to set permission for user
I'm having troubles with a download and I need permissions for the conig files and to have write-access to your ~/.loki/ directory and all sub directories. Does anyone know how to do this?

I'm hoping to do something similar to the way you can install Windows on a Mac's 'Boot Camp' partition, but then you can also open that partition as a Virtual Machine using Parallels or VMware from within OS X.That way for the quick stuff, you just fire up the VM, but for the more 'intense' things, you can boot into Windows natively. The difference here being I want to use Ubuntu instead of Windows. (Don't care if I use Apple's 'boot camp' mechanism or a third-party boot manager either.)

View 2 Replies View Relatedit all started with my eagerness to have a triple boot system with XP/Win7/Ubuntu 10.04. I had xp on a PC with an Asus M/B with a single 320GB SATA HDD.Then I installed Win 7 (probably into a logical drive). It went well. Then after searching for some help I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on to another partition. Fine up to here, but when I saw I was able to access other partition files from Linux but not the other way. Then thru some help from some forums I tried to free some space from the Linux Partition and make it as a shared drive between Win and Linux.
In this process I used GParted live CD to rearrange partitions and tried to format the unallocated space it is showing "you cannot create a new volume in this unallocated space because the disk is already containing the maximum number of partitions."
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 to dual-boot with XP Home on my Asus 1005HA netbook. The main hard drive is an OCZ Vertex 2 SSD. I've tried all the common tools for accessing the Ubuntu partition from inside XP, but none of them appears to work. Ext2IFS didn't let me assign drive letters - in fact, it doesn't seem to detect the Ubuntu partition at all. The Ext2IFS config tool in Control Panel looks like this (the SSD is 120 GB, and the Linux partition is 10GB as I recall):
explore2fs doesn't even start. Linux Reader can't open any drive, including flash drives and external HDDs.
I can't think of anything irregular about my system except the SSD. Could that be it?
How can I access a Linux partition from Windows? How to read EXT2 from Windows 7 64-bit? Does a ext4 reader for Windows exist?
I am currently in Windows and was wondering if there is any way I could mount my Linux partition, so I can access and transfer files? The file system is ext4
I have an SSH server set up on CentOS 5.5 which I can succesfully use to access my file system remotely.
On this machine, I also have a partition with XP installed on it. Is there a way I can set up the SSH server so that I can remotely access the files on the XP partition?
I have a directory in /var/www/html with 777 permissions... when I try to access from another machine (on the same network - local) I get a permissions error I thought if I open recursively (chmod -R 777 directory_name) that I should be allowed to see the pages...

I have installed Nginx with PHP-FPM on Debian 8 to learn more about Linux permissions. Nginx is run as www-data user.
I have created a simple PHP script that outputs the date. I have set the permission as 000 (no permission at all) and it is root:root. How come I can still run this script in the browser without getting access denied? The script is inside a folder with world execution. When removing the world execution permission, the script can't be run. How does this all connect to each other?
