Programming :: Build Whole Distribution From Source Codes?
Dec 11, 2008
I have downloaded whole linux source codes of fedora in a dvd. There are several rpm packages and lots of directories in it. I want to load all source codes to version control system (svn or cvs) which is loacated in a server and develop it step by step .During this time I want to build my own distribution. So I need to know how to build all these packages at once. Is there anyone who can explain "how to do" to me

We all know we can install a linux system such as Fedora 10 and use it. Being linux, one should in principle get the source codes for everything that has been precompiled (except the proprietary drivers such as nvidia) in the installation DVDs/CDs. Where are the source codes ? Is there a place I can download them ?
To avoid confusion, I am not referring to the kernel source that can be compiled to give a linux kernel, but that does not include the drivers, such as intel_drv.so.
To be more specific, the intel graphic i810 driver has been built into any linux system, but where is the exact source? One answer may be that primary source intellinuxgraphics.com. However, if anyone tries to download the every changing (i.e., keep updated almost every single day) driver source codes from freedesktop.org, it is almost certain that the source codes will not be the same as the one that is finalized in Fedora 10.

I've been using and relying on linux for some time. I have even tried distributions like Arch. I was wondering what would be a good book for learning the inner workings of linux, how to write shell scripts, compile my own kernel, how to build my own distribution, things like that. I also would like to know if there is a good book for linux networking works. I want to be able to modify distributions specifically for my hardware, and have a better home net work set up.

Is there a tool or tutorial to build a distro based on mint/ubuntu/debian?Git, scripts, and tools, small compilations for branding are OK. Compiling kernel, x11, gnome, compiz, etc. is BAD unless really required. Specifically, I'm looking for a way to have some applications installed by default, change logos/about boxes, change theme, configure what compiz options are, and add firmware drivers (connect to the Internet to download wireless adapter driver? <- headache, gotta find a lan cable now ...), and still have the liveCD install method. I'd like it to be based on linux mint, but I only want a few tools from it (update manager, software manager, flash, media codecs), so it's ok if it's ubuntu/debian with those mint tools added back in.
I saw some options, too complex, and others too simple. Not looking for a "learning experience" like LFS which gives me a horrible linux build if I don't do something exactly right. Nor any of those tools which are just package pickers and don't do enough. suse studio looked about right(maybe tad too easy), but was RPM based, not deb based.

When I do a yum or an initial load of vsftpd, I get binary that works. I got the source file "vsftpd-2.0.5-12.el5_3.1.src.rpm" from [URL] to make a change to add chown_upload_mode to version 2.0.5
With no changes to the source, the program works but does not respond to the service command properly. See [URL]
How do I get the source of vsftpd that matches the binary distribution?

Is there any open source Linux distribution available, which has built in anti-virus package installed, like kaspersky, mcafee or trend micro, so that I can able to scan my windows XP based machines which are on the network, and can be scan and clean remotely through this type of Linux distribution installed machine. I have search on a internet that some Live rescue Linux cd's are available, which can scan and clean the virus of windows machines. like F-secure Live cd, or knoppex Linux based Bit defender live cds that can be most effective to resolve this issue. But is there any distribution available like these live Linux distribution cd's, that can be installed in dedicated system to scan/clean the remote windows machines. Or is live cd can be installed on hard drive?

I wish to implement some part of my codes to use the GPU of my graphic card but I have no idea whether GNU as already implemented it (as for OpenMP). I mean, there are PGI Fortran compiler which embedded CUDA but I figure it's not free. I also wonder if that works only with ATI graphic cards or if for instance I can use my Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller.

One of the feature in my application involve changing of hardware setting. This require the user to be root or have administrative right. Before my application enable that feature, I want it to check whether the user is "root" or not, or whether user use "sudo" command to run the application or not, or whether the user has administrative rights or not. What are the codes or library that can do this?
NOTE: Sometimes, advanced linux user may set the user id of root to something else other than 0. So, getuid() may not be helpful in this case.

I need a script that can print some series of strings in colors based in the information of a file, for simplicity let's say it only does:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
printf "e[1;31;32m%-10se[00m" "OK"
When you execute this in the command line it prints a bold green 'OK'. So far so good.
Now, I need to check the output of the script over time using the command watch. The problem then arises. watch seems to ignore the escape codes and just prints:
Code:
[1;31;32mOK [00m
Is there any way to fix this?
If not, how can I check inside the script if it is being executed from a command? (watch in this case) So I can print without color for those cases.

iceweasel_5.0-3~bpo60+1.dsc

configure: error: Package requirements (fribidi) were not met:
No package 'fribidi' found
Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.
Alternatively, you may set the environment variables FRIBIDI_CFLAGS
and FRIBIDI_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.

I had a debian installation with kernel 2.6.32 I had a set of instructions to apply a patch to kernel which I followed to the T. The grub now shows the Debian installation with the old kernel and the Debian installation with the patched kernel.
The trouble is the system goes blank after attempting to start gdm3.
I have tried running in recovery mode and then typing startx but it only shows a blank screen.
Code: lspci | grep -i display
00:02.1 Display controller : Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02) If i boot with the old kernel, everything works fine. Is this an "X" window configuration issue. I tried X -configure but still nothing changed.

Now that we are starting to face the reality of Vista/Win7 implementations, we will need to do an upgrade of Samba to enable functionality. I am having difficulty in upgrading our version of Samba (3.3.4), as I compile from source, and do not use binary distributions. I'm running Slack12 and could really use some help on how I can build samba from source and UPGRADE it easily?
