Has someone tried to build and install wine in squeeze? I tried follow different manuals (e.g. [URL].. but always run into lots of warnings, missing packages and abortion of make. No wonder, squeeze seem to be pretty different from lenny.
I installed the binary wine, but that does not help in my case. There is a kind of bug in code for the mouse that can be fixed only by applying a patch. So anyone want to build wine and write down all the actions?

while trying to get a game to work on wine I was surprised to find out that the wine version that ships with sid is 1.0.1 released in October 2005. So I installed the latest release I found at [URL] like this :
dpkg -i wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb
The install failed, I think because I hadn't remove the old wine version, and that's when the joy-ride started. Impossible to remove wine to restart properly. (apt-get remove libwine wine and apt-get -f install didn't) After some googling I tried this :
dpkg -i --force-depends wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb
This did install the wine version I wanted, and the game ran fine after that. However the result was a borked apt-get. Tried to remove wine again with the above commands, resulting in apt-get failing to do so because it tried installing wine-unstable and reported errors similar to these : E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'wine-unstable'. see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details. Is it possible and how it works to build squeeze live usb-hdd on lenny or it's really necessary first to upgrade my lenny to squeeze?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI run Debian Squeeze on the powerpc architecture and I'd like to install the newest Iceweasel on it. The Debain Mozilla repo only has binary packages for i386 and amd64 but provides sources.
So I did: apt-get source iceweasel
which resulted in the creation of these files/directories:

I had a debian installation with kernel 2.6.32 I had a set of instructions to apply a patch to kernel which I followed to the T. The grub now shows the Debian installation with the old kernel and the Debian installation with the patched kernel.
The trouble is the system goes blank after attempting to start gdm3.
I have tried running in recovery mode and then typing startx but it only shows a blank screen.

It all seems to work, however debuild gave an error about secret keys. Is this a sensible procedure? What happens in the (probably unlikely) event there is another source patch?I've gone to a tiling window manager as the result of the purchase of a wide screen LCD monitor. I like to have some stuff down the right hand side when running Firefox and OpenOffice in the main panes. Any configuration tricks welcome. Modern screens are the wrong shape!
I have been asked to install Windows 7 on a computer that groans to even run Windows xp properly. As I know, this is like asking for the impossible, I am posting here to have some opinions about the use of Wine in Debian. In particular, I would like to know whether wine makes Debian less secure and more vulnerable to viral, malware, adware, etc infections.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to compile wine (1.1.28) in squeeze (AMD64). After I run the configuration scripts, I receive this error:
"configure: libhal/libdbus 32-bit development files not found, no dynamic device support."
I installed the ia32-libs package and libhal.so, libhal.so.,1libhal.so.1.0.0, libdbus-1.so exist in /usr/lib32.
I am compiling wine with the USB support patches, so I believe I will need libhal.

i screwed up a good debian install with wine. before i do it again i want to know what the best way to get and install wine . AMD 64, toshiba L645D laptop with 3G ram. ATI radon openGL . I read several pages and seems they suggest to compile from source (which i can do i think). others say to use aptitude .
View 7 Replies View Relatedsince lamaresh is not being updated anymore and the wine packages from the official Debian repository are quite old there isn't really much choice for getting a recent version of wine anymore. Since I don't want to use the carbon project or the Mempis repository, as stated here, (at least yet) I have decided to build the package myself. Unfortunately I would like to have a 32bit version but am running a 64bit version of Debian Squeeze. When I run ./configure I get the following message at the end.

I am currently using Squeeze 32 bit with both gnome and KDE desktops. I have a legitimate office disk, and wanted to use MS word for work due to formatting glitches in Open Office. However squeeze says the disk is corrupt and refuses to progress. This is not so as the same disk works fine in aptosid and Kubuntu. So wine is not very useful in Squeeze whilst it behaves like this. After all it is I suspect it at least should be able to install MS word, though of course no updates are given by MS as it hates wine. Both Gnome and KDE gave the same results, as user or root. I wonder if anything else can be done to Wine to make it work. Perhaps it is something to do with the "free" kernel, I only speculate. Otherwise Squeeze is going very well.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI have a set of vm's with stable, testing, and sid to keep track of how things are going. When I did an apt-get dist-upgrade with squeeze last week, things seemed to OK (350 package updates) until the end. It didn't seem to like and / or was confused by a kernel dependency.
I am not too concerned yet. Because these are in vm's, I do a snapshot before any significant change. I can futz around with impunity because I have that backup.
I re-booted, and tried the apt-get dist-upgrade again with same results. I think I also tried apt-get -f install.
So I reverted to the snapshot, and will simply try again in the future. I recall that with lenny as testing, the font-desktop was really screwed up for about a period of 6 weeks.
However, just in case someone else runs into this:
1) a re-boot worked, but the failure of apt-get made me nervous enough to revert.
2) waiting for corrections has seemed to work in the past (with a single exception with a 4-disk SCSI software RAID10 update that failed to re-boot lenny successfully after what seemed to be a minor update -- that was on a real system, not a vm. I haven't gotten back to look at that.)
i got a question about making a package from orginal wine source. I keep getting a error on the last part (will post the errro later in post )

When i remove the ati drivers it builds fine but with every build of wine to remove my ati drivers is not a option. I also asked on the wine forums but the told me to ask here . And the person also sayed it looks like you install the ati drivers from the one of the ati site but i installed them from the debian repos.
After finally figuring out how exactly how to compile something from source, I did it with Wine. However, there's a problem, when I'm trying to play a game on Steam (Half-Life) on a TNT2 graphics card (With NVIDIA drivers 71.86 installed as well as all of the packages needed to compile Wine from source), everything either lags or has an error.
One of these errors is that OpenGL32 isn't being initialized after attempting to start the game in that mode. Another error (or I should say problem) is that in Direct3D mode, it just.. crashes lol. Also, in Software mode, it LAGS horribly and I don't think it has to do with the hardware limitations I have on this machine. I did however install the glx and gl drivers AFTER I compiled Wine, do I have to do yet another install?

What happens if I update Debian Squeeze from Lenny's source.list?A step by step manual is written on Lenny, and if I change lenny to squeeze things seem to not work.When I update the squeeze from the original source.list and then change to the source.list that manual uses things are working.But if I were to start squeeze with lenny's source.list I am getting error while trying to do this:

I recently just installed Squeeze on an ia64 system and was having some troubles with running VNC.I get the following error, more specifically for some reason I get a malloc - memory corruption error:

I recently tossed Ubuntu for Debian Unstable for my personal machines and I'm having trouble building Emerald into a package. I've already configured and installed the package (using the usual ./configure, make, make install) but I wanted to make a deb for future use (for myself and for others). However every time I try to run dpkg-build I get the following error message.

I have installed build-essentials, linux-headers and linux sources. What I have to install to complete this compile?
My new laptop works out of the box except for the video and the ethernet. For this, I have to use a later kernel than the Debian kernel (debian squeeze is currently 2.6.32). Upgrading to the new kernel (without moving to the testing dist itself) was pretty easy. I just installed linux-image-2.6.38-2-amd64 and linux-base from the testing distribution by manually downloading and using dpkg. After that, ethernet and video started working.
However, my virtualbox installation no longer works because the drivers do not match the kernel. I am used to this; whenever debian upgrades the kernel on me, I have to run "/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup". This rebuilds the drivers. This failed for me, however, because it could not find the headers. So, I installed some more packages:
linux-kbuild-2.6.38
linux-headers-2.6.38-2-common
linux-headers-2.6.38-2-amd64
Now, when I rebuild it, I get this:

I installed Firestarter firewall on debian Squeeze.Now i note there is a gui available in System->Administration which apparently does not need to be running all the time - its not set up to start on boot.When I boot I notice the boot message has a line saying "Starting Firestarter firewall .... failed"When I am logged in and type "/etc/init.d/firestarter status" as the Firestarter FAQs say, I get"Firestarter is running... ... (warning)"I can run the gui manually and still same message.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I activate Tor in Iceweasel, it forbids me access to the internet completely. Even attempting Google results in "Iceweasel is configured to use proxy server that is refusing connection".
I have seen this in Lenny, too - it was caused by activating Tor without having installed privoxy. I installed privoxy and everything was okay. In Squeeze, Tor is using polipo. Polipo is installed and running. I have not played with settings of polipo or Tor, the configuration is the same as it was after installation.
What can be wrong? I am a rather an user than a networking guru. I am connected to internet by means of DHCP, no local lans, no special routings, no additional proxies. I have already tired to reinstall polipo.
I am working with linux-source-2.6.30 from squeeze.
The only changes I made in the config file were the processor type, and I disabled CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED_V2 to avoid some warnings from udev.
When I tried to build the kernel package, this is what I get:

Searching for this error turned up a plethora of results, none of which seemed relevant.
I see that it tells me to file a bug report, but I'm not sure if that is meant for the Debian kernel team or upstream.
Does aptitude(or apt-get) have the functionality to remove the packages installed from using build-dep? It just seems convenient if you want to remove a program that was built from source.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI used make-kpkg to build the 3.0.0 source debian wheezy on a dual 3.4GHz Xeon/L1-16k/L2-1mb/800Mhz bus with 4GB PC2-3200 ECC ram and Ultra 320 SCSI, using CONCURRENCY_LEVEL=4 (2 hyperthreading cpus=4 cores). The build was slower than molasses in January! Top reported cpu usage total between 10% and 25%. Why won't the build use the amount of machine it has available. One footnote: I wasn't using swap space. It literally took over an hour to build the deb kernel package.
My notebook from 2003 is at least three times faster building the 3.0.0 debian kernel source. Is it possible that this might cause improvement: make -j4 KDEB_PKGVERSION=version deb-pkg

Could amd64 vs. i386 have some influence? Could the small processor caches on the XEON cpus have an effect. The 64-bit machine absolutely flies doing everything else. I'm miffed! I've used debian since woody, although I am not an expert, but I'm no slouch!
Just installed squeeze on a new laptop(had been runny Lenny on my older one with no issues, but no sound or wireless on the new one).I decided to install the ATI drive for my Radeon Mobility 4500(or some close revision) because the fan is constantly running and based on some other postings, it seems that it could be the graphics card causing it.Downloaded the driver from ATI's site and it seemed to install fine but when starting X.
