I have 3 processes to be executed in a particular sequence.
ProcessA
ProcessB
ProcessC
The requirement is that all the processes should run as background processes.
ProcessA talks to ProcessB and ProcessC using sockets.
ProcessB talsk to ProcessA only using sockets.
ProcessC talsk to ProcessA only using sockets.

I've been a PHP developer for about 6 years now - the last two years I have been pretty inactive though. Just recently though, I have been reading resources on all the different programming patterns (Factory, Singleton, Registry, Observer, MVC, etc) to try and get my head around good programming techniques. For myself though I find that I can only truly understand how these methods work when I am forced to do them myself.I have a large project I am doing at my workplace (me only) that involves building a very complex PHP application.
I would like to know your professional opinion; should I spend the extra time to program this PHP application myself and really, properly learn all these different programming patterns? Or, should I just build on top of a PHP framework like the Zend Framework for speed's sake (and flexibility/features)?
I have found understanding exactly how the Zend Framework works hard, just because I haven't been exposed to using these programming patterns myself. I hate that - I want to fully understand exactly what is happening in my application and know exactly how each part relates to others.

I have a file named "test.txt". It contains the following:
Hello $USER1
Your boss is $ADMIN1
Now, I want to do something like this:
export USER1="World"
export ADMIN1="Me"
cat test.txt > test2.txt
And achieve something like this when I view the contents of test2.txt:
Hello World
Your boss is Me
The problem is, it's not that easy to achieve. I don't want to do the "echo Hello $USER1 >> test2.txt" because I'm planning to implement this on a MB-sized text file.

I'm trying to save the output of the script I wanna run but for some reason I cant manage to do it with "script.sh > Output_4.txt"
The thing is that the script was already run and it extracted some directories so when I try to run it again (to save the log to a Output_4.txt) bash says (see screen-capture) and of course the log's empty!!!!

I went to an interview last week and there was this guy who asked a simple question that i have been trying to solve for a couple of days. I tried google but i just cant get the search keywords right. The result were just useless. Well, the question is : "How can we allocate a limited memory to a process before we start its execution" well, the question is related to an X11 system so may be some flags must be set to limit its memory.

As part of my job I often have to write queries in Oracle (10g) and I am experienced enough to see where I should be using an index where possible etc. Most of the time I just let the CBO come up with the best plan however sometimes it obviously doesn't!Now, I know in general that full scans of large tables aren't good however I don't fully understand an execution plan - ie, I could not look at a complex piece of code, look at it's plan and say "oh, the reason that is performing badly there is because the SBO has chosen to use nested loops rather than a hash join, so if I hint it then it will run quicker!" - this ultimately is where I'm trying to get to

I'm trying to figure out how to continue execution of a Python program while a background task is going on.
In bash, it is adding "&" to the end as in:
Code:
#! /bin/bash
find / -iname "*.py" > /tmp/all_pys &
echo "looking for all python scripts and putting them in /tmp/all_pys"
(yes, I know I could just put the echo BEFORE the find but I just use it for example)
Say I do that in python (not necessarily running the shell, but perhaps using scriptutil.ffind or something similar), but want to allow the user to be doing something else while running that search in the background, how would I thread, fork, subprocess (not to be confused with the module and Popen) [or whatever I should call it] that?

i'm programming a small widget for a panel and need some information from my system. The command on the shell would be whoami to find out which user i am. This information is needed for my widget to set up the title of the widget, the information of the user will be retrieved out of the /etc/passwd (the code works just fine), but i don't know how i can get the information. One possibility would be to create a child process, call whoami with execlp(). But how can i retrieve the output of that process?

Code:
model="`cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep model | cut -d: -f2 | cut -c1-3`"
echo $model
All i want this to do is spit out the model number once. (I need to pass it to another script)

I'm using fedora 15, when I updated the os through software update application in it, I got an error as shown in the figure. Actually I had installed some missing plugins and I set up free and non-free rpm repository through the kernel, based on the information given on the below site.! Personal Fedora 15 Installation Guide. Guess that might have done some damages to the RPM Fusion non-free repository.!

Consider the following code:
Code:
int main()
{
int i=0;
pid_t pid;
for(i=0;i<2;i++)
[code]....
I get the following output:
Parent: chid_pid=4356 i=0 parent's pid=4355
This is child 4356 i=0
This is child 4357 i=1
[code]....
I can observe instead of two children(as I expect) processes there are three. This is because child process 4356 creates its own child. Why all the messages of the type "This is child X i=Y" are concentrated one under another? How exactly fork works? Is affected by the fact that I have a dual-core processor?

I have two files :
FileA
prot1
prot5
prot9
prot15
[Code]....
What I need to do is to extract from fileB the fields containing only the strings in fileA.
I thought awk could do the job easily with :
Code:
awk 'BEGIN { RS = "###" } /'$variable'/' fileB > output
where variable would maybe be the output of grep from fileA. So can I store the output of grep in a variable to use it afterwards with awk ?
something like that:
Code:
result=`grep prot. fileA` ; awk 'BEGIN { RS = "###" } /'$result'/' fileB > output
but that doesn't work. I'm always getting the entire fileB.
The output of grep get stored in the variable, I verified that with echo. So there is something that I just don't get... It seems to me that the above line should work.
