Ubuntu Networking :: WICD Not Automatically Reconnect After Suspend Or Hibernate
Feb 22, 2010
I'm actually running Debian Lenny and using WICD. Sometimes when I wake the system up from standby it reconnects me to my wireless connection, but sometimes it wont. (Same thing for hibernate). On the times that it wont work it just hangs at obtaining IP address.
I'm running WiFi AP (hostapd/nl80211) and STA (Wicd) in my home net. More or less all does work fine at last. The only problem I have - STA reconnection works few times only (1-4 times), ending with unsuccessful authentification (and multiple AP probing in hostapd debug output before STA failing). Two contradictive facts take place:
1. Reloading hostapd on the AP side permits Wicd to reconnect, while STA rebooting(!) doesn't help. 2. Another STA - my son's Nokia mobile phone (don't know a model) - reconnects with this AP without problems (we have tried 10 times).
So, you see, first fact says something wrong with AP, while the second one says something wrong with STA. Or you can treat these facts in strictly opposite way Indeed WiFi under Linux is very fragile area yet. I have found plenty of close-to-be-similar reports as well as different resolving ways (but it is rare case).OK, few words about setup. Up to date Kubuntu Maverick testing with backports enabled on both sides. ASUS USB-N11 adapters are in use on both sides. It means RT2870 chip.
I am using WICD as my wireless network manager and it works connecting to a network for the first time. But when I resume my laptop from hibernate or standby, WICD will not reconnect to the network and gets stuck on obtaining an IP address. And if I try to change networks without hibernating I get the same problem. Also, I notice that the network name is stagnant. I connect to multiple wifi networks a day because of school. When I leave my "home" network and connect to my "school" network WICD still says "Homebtaining IP address" even thought it should say "schoolbtaining IP address." My thoughts are that it isn't releasing the network properly and when its trying to connect it can't because it still thinks it's connected. The only solution I have found is to restart my laptop every time I want to connect to a new network, or shut down every time I am done using my laptop, which is a major inconvenience.
Here is what I am using:
HP tx2000 Broadcom BCM4322 Ubuntu 10.04 WICD 1.7.0
Just got Ubuntu 9.10 and I'm liking it a lot, but my computer refuses to go into hibernate or suspend. I have a Dell M1530 but I don't really think it's a dell hardware issue because it's not just when I close the screen, it's also when I click suspend or hibernate from the menu.
i just installed ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix on my acer aspireone ao532h netbook, and so far, it's been working beautifully. much better than the windows 7 starter edition that came with the machine. the only problem i've experienced so far had to do with the wireless connection. initially, the connection would drop during certain types of activities (e.g. downloading updates or programs, or even streaming videos videos) and the network manager would freeze so completely that i'd have to hard reboot. that seems to have been fixed by installing wicd (following a suggestion here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1135723&page=2), meaning that it hasn't disconnected in the several hours since i've been using it. however, wicd has a different problem: it disconnects after a suspend / resume cycle. this requires a reboot to fix also, as not only does it disconnect, but it looses awareness of the network altogether. obviously, this could be a real headache on a netbook that gets closed and opened frequently.
After I resume from hibernate with my cpu frequency manually set to the highest settings (2ghz) the network manager shows not wifi APs. "wlan0" shows under both ifconfig and iwconfig but "iwlist wlan0 scan" says no results. "sudo iwlist wlan0 scan" also says no results. I've tried rmmod then modprobe with no luck. Rebooting is the only way I can get WiFi working.
I can get wifi working again by: - rebooting - changing the cpu scaling to a lower setting then hibernate/resume - changing the cpu scaling to a lower setting then 'sudo rmmod ath9k; sudo modprobe ath9k;'
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 with Atheros ar5008 (AR5BXB72) using ath9k drives Code: $ lspci |grep Atheros 0e:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5008 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01) Code: $ uname -r 2.6.32-24-generic
I upgraded my openSUSE to 11.4 and wifi was still working out of the box.
However now when I turn the wifi off using the hardware button and than back on, or when I wake up from hibernate, (k)networkmanager won't recognize the wifi device... I actually have to run /etc/init.d/network restart to reconnect to network. The problem is that it worked in 11.3... why not in 11.4? Now every time I hibernate my laptop I had to manually restart network. In 11.3 it was automatic...
I'm running squeeze testing. I have noticed an issue with the way NetworkManager acts when the wireless connection is dropped. I believe it should automatically reconnect but it immediately puts up a dialog requesting me to enter the wifi password. This dialog stays indefinitely until I intervene and click "OK" (the password from the previous successful connection is still there). I would think that something as basic as wireless networking should not require 24 hour human interaction to stay connected. I have considered a cron job checking the network status and restarting it if necessary, but there is a configuration change or something else I can do to resolve this.
I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. When I partitioned my HDD, I ran out of available partitions and so couldn't make a Swap Partition.I pushed on anyway, because I read here that you can create a Swap File instead of a partition that does the same thing. I've made the Swap File and it's activated (I know because during shutdown there's a message that flashes very quickly that says "Deactivating Swap [OK]".
But here's the real problem. My Ubuntu refuses to Suspend or Hibernate. The screen just goes black and the backlight stays on. Since one of the main functions of the swap file is to facilitate Suspend and Hibernate,I upgraded from 9.10 Karmic Koala, which suspended and hibernated normally.
I have a hp dv3 2110eg laptop with OpenSuse 11.1 (KDE 3.5.10) and Windows 7 dual boot. My wireless disconnects and connects automatically at random intervals. I do not observe this behaviour when operating my laptop under Windows 7. Following some suggestions given in this forum , I uninstalled networkmanager and installed wicd. However, this does not seem to solve the problem. Given below are the relevant information. uname -r
jeff@jeff-lappy:~$ sudo hibernate hibernate:Warning: Tuxonice binary signature file not found. Some modules failed to unload: nvidia hibernate: Aborting suspend due to errors in ModulesUnloadBlacklist (use --force to override).
I even installed this tuxonice thing but to no avail...
I can Suspend or Hibernate my Gateway notebook but I have no idea how to wake it up.The power button is set to suspend or hibernate....I not sure which it does, but I can't wake the computer up.
which ubuntu log file records when a suspend happened?I was ssh'ing into my ubuntu box periodically yesterday, when I discovered that it was no longer reachable. On getting home last night I discovered that it was still switched on, but I think in suspend mode as moving the mouse brought it back to life. The clock however, still showed 12:15pm, which is roughly when I stopped being able to ssh to it. I'd like to see the logs to confirm this.
My Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop Lenovo T400 is not able to suspend or hibernate. Whenever I click Suspend or Hibernate in Startup options of the OS: * the moon LED on the bottom of the lid flashes a few seconds, the screen quickly shows something like "some devices fail to suspend, error 5", * and then the moon LED goes off and the display still has ambient light illumination. I suppose in suspend or hibernation state, the display should have no illumination, just like when the laptop is turned off, right? * If I press any key, the unlock screen dialogue will pop out. I have installed 'acpi-support' and 'hibernate 1.99-1.1'. But I don't know how to use these methods to suspend or hibernate my OS. Are they by commands in terminate, or can they be called by clicking Suspend or Hibernate in Startup options of the OS? For example, I type the hibernation command and it shows something is missing although I have installed "tuxonice-userui" ( I don't know if it will provide Tuxonice binary signature file):
I think it might have to do with an app I installed called Jupiter (http://sourceforge.net/projects/jupiter/) that missed with my power configs, I removed it but I still can't hibernate or suspend. Whenever I try to do either, my screen fades to black and nothing happens. If I move the mouse or touch the keyboard, it comes back.
I just got a Dell Inspiron 1764 and am dual booting it with Win7 and Ubuntu 9.10.Whenever I hibernate or suspend, it goes through everything fine, but then when I resume it just boots to a black screen and I have to do a hard shutdown. Is there a fix for this? I know it's a fairly common issue.
I was looking for a way to disable the Suspend and Hibernate options from the logout menu as my laptop hangs on both and requires unplugging/battery removal to restart.
I found a few pages with instructions for older Ubuntu versions but I didn't come across anything that applied directly to 10.04 Lucid Lynx so I thought I'd post what I found worked for me on 10.04.
Open a Terminal from the Applications>Accessories>Terminal. Because the file you will be editing requires root privileges to edit, you will need to use the sudo command:
Enter your password. This will then open the settings file in the text editor with the needed permissions (opening the file directly with the editor you will get an error message if you try to save the file). There are two sections in this file, the first for suspend and the second for hibernate. Near the end of each section will be a line with:
Code: <allow_active>yes</allow_active>
Change this from Yes to No to disable. Save the changes and reboot.
Code: <allow_active>no</allow_active>
Now the power menu will not display these options. To reverse changes just repeat the above and change from no back to yes.
I've got a Thinkpad X31 with ATI M6 Ly card. Since Karmic, and Lucid, I get no suspend/hibernate/resume. If/when I select resume or close the lid, Lucid goes through the suspend cycle, and for approximately half a second it actually seems to go into suspend, then the screen comes back on, black, but definitely on, and absolutely no response to any keyboard input - have to hard-shutdown by holding down the power button. I've read that the problem is with the Ubuntu kernel, and that installing/compiling 2.6.33 fixes the issue, but causes other ones.
When I try either one I just get the lock screen where I have to enter my password to return to my session, but the computer never suspends or hibernates.
The other day somebody sat next to me whom I don't feel like entering in my password around, and I wanted to take my computer elsewhere. If I put my computer in my backpack while it's running, my computer will get hot, and the batteries will drain. So I'd like to put my computer in hibernate, or suspend mode, but my computer was already locked, and I couldn't hibernate or suspend without logging in, but I didn't want to enter my password around this guy so I could hibernate or suspend, so I was stuck.
I know there are reasons to keep things the way they are, (like maybe a server environment, etc...) and maybe it should default the way it is now, but I'd like the option to add the ability to hibernate and/or suspend when logged out, at the log in screen and/or a locked screen, without having to use a password.
All is in the thread title. When I log back in after suspend or hibernate I get a lot of flickering on the screen. I noticed (I think) that it calms down a bit when streaming video from the net, if that gives any clue...
I'm using a dual boot with Vista basic/lucid lynx on an Acer Aspire 5100 laptop.
There are no more suspend and hibernate options. I don't know when they disappeared. Before that I installed "laptop-mode-tools", but when I found that those two options are lost, I deleted (sudo apt-get remove) it.
Ok so I'm still a bit of a Ubuntu n00b and I just installed 10.04 on my new laptop (Asus U35F) and it's working pretty well except for one problem.. Every time the laptop goes to sleep/suspends/hibernates, when I try to resume it again it hangs. So I end up seeing the screen to re-log in and I can usually move my mouse around and start typing my password in and all of that for maybe a second, but after that it just freezes!
Especially since right now Ubuntu is the only operating system I have running, and since I use this in school and need to conserve battery as much as possible so it stays running through 6 hours of class, I really need to get this fixed up soon..
The OS is Lucid 64-bit . Before I begin I must say suspend/hibernate works fine with 3 other machines, so I'm trying to find out what's wrong with this one. I tried [URL].. and also I tried changing acpi-support. It currently is as this:
