OpenSUSE :: Trying To Find XFree86

Aug 21, 2011

I am running Opensuse 11.4 and trying to install the ATI graphics driver. System requirements are for XFree86-Mesa_libGL and XFree86-libs. I can find XFree86-Mesa_libGL but end up with dependency hell and can't find the libGLU.so1 needed and I can't find XFree86-libs Has anyone got any ideas where to find these and any dependencies.

General :: Differences Between XFree86 And KDE?

Oct 7, 2009

My old Intrepid box got old and senile in the hardware, so I had to take it back round the shed and put her down.I buried her next to her favorite tree in the backyard. So yes, I got this new Mini ITX setup with a dual core Atom processor and 4 gigs of ram for my new computer. I'm going to use it as a media center in my living room. However Atom 1.6 ghz is no screamer so I'd like to build a system using a light weight operating environment to leave more power for running programs and playing my media.

I could install the latest version of Kubuntu again but I thought this time I'd try to get a bit deeper into Linux and educate myself. Could someone clarify the differences between XFree86, Window Manager, and a Desktop Environment (KDE/GNOME/etc)? I know it goes like Hardware -> XServer -> XFree86 -> Window Manager (I read the tutorial on linux.org). But where does KDE or a "Desktop Environment" come in? Is KDE a decked out window manager with its own programs that runs on top of XFree86 or what? Or does it totally replace XFree86?

Software :: Replacement / Alternative To Xfree86-lib On RHEL 5.4?

Jun 25, 2010

We are setting up a new environment for a client by upgrading their O/S as well. These are database servers and are going to run Oracle on them. I have installed the RHEL5.4 O/s and all was well. I also setup all the required packages as per oracle documentation and still all worked fine. The dba then installed the following packages as he stated it was required, however this caused the gui dispay to be broken a X fails to start:

XFree86-libs-4.3.0-128.EL
XFree86-libs-data-4.3.0-128.EL

The current kernel version is: 2.6.18-164.el5PAE I tried to see if this package is on the Linux disks, however it could not be found and he thus downloaded these packages. Does anybody know about an alternative package set to replace these or alternatively an updated set specifically for RHEL 5.4 as I am unable to find any on the web.

Debian Multimedia :: XFREE86 Or Don't Have Xorg As X Window Server?

Mar 20, 2011

I have a couple of questions and one problem regarding my AMD64 Testing box. According to this Debian Xorg Wiki : Xorg is the default X Window server since Debian 4.0 (etch). It replaces XFree86 and is maintained in Debian by the XStrikeForce. But...it appears that I don't have Xorg as my X Window server, but rather XFREE86? I just checked my i386 Testing box, it does have /etc/X11/xorg.conf

[Code]...

The problem: I have lost my higher screen resolutions after today's apt-get dist-upgrade. I only have 800x600 and 640x480. I probably won't complain about these resolutions in twenty years or so, but for now, I'd rather get the higher resolutions back, ha.

Red Hat :: Fatal Server Error No Screens Found On RedHat 7.1 XFree86

Apr 4, 2009

there are several posts related to my problem but not quite what I want. I don't need any effects to be running nor do I need perfect resolution. I have a PCI-E card Nvidia 8600 gts and I need to run redhat 7.1 for reasons that are not debatable. I also have an onboard ati radeon X 1250 but currently I am running the PCI-E.The installation was successful and ran in GUI, however after installation and reboot, the screen keeps flickering trying to load the desktop.I just need to get the GUI running the same way the installer was able to run in GUI, I tried editing the XF86Config file to change the driver to either vesa or vga but still didn't work. Probing for devices is not an option since the card is not listed and the maximum video ram goes up to 64MB in xconfigurator. It probes my card as a VGA generic with 1 MB ram. I know there is a way to have the desktop load just the same as the installer's gui settings but that's where I need help.

this is after changing all the 'driver' values to vesa. I don't understand why it can't find the screen even though I used the horizontal and vert. sync values for my monitor. Any instructions or advice on how to just get the desktop loaded would be great, I know this is a very old OS but regardless I need for it to work.

OpenSUSE :: Find Which Package Provides A Particular File?

Jan 27, 2010

I was trying to build an RPM today and the compilation errored out because the file glibconfig.h couldn't be found. I managed to track it down to the package glib2-devel.The problem is that I couldn't find a way to do this via zypper. In Mandriva I would've just done 'urpmf glibconfig.h' and it would've told me that it's provided by the package glib2-devel.

Is there equivalent functionality in zypper? (glibconfig.h is an easy pick as being related to glib, but some header file names might be more obscure for example)

OpenSUSE :: Can't Find The NIS Server When The Firewall Is Off?

Feb 24, 2010

I've been setting up NIS for the first time. When I have the firewall on, the NIS client can't find the NIS server. When the firewall is off, it can. These are both on the same computer (the server).I have both the NIS client and server opened in the firewall -- all the setup has been done through yast so far.

Is there something else that needs to be done that I missing? Or if not, perhaps it just a minor setup bug in the scripts in which case could someone tell me what ports I would additionally need to open manually in the firewall to make it work that wouldn't already be opened?

On a different note, in a recent discussion on another thread someone told me that openSUSE was going to be unsupported from around May this year -- has anyone heard of this or should I just ignore it? I thought with 40k users registered on the website Novell would find something better to do with all of us rather that just drop us so I am a little skeptical.
