My problem is, firefox (3.6.12 and 4.0 beta 7) freezes for seconds/minutes and enters in disk sleep state (the usb-storage process too). My system is an EeePC 701, openSUSE 11.3 x86, with the /home and swap partitions on a SD card.

The problem still exists after system update and i try run other distributions like kubuntu and i don't get this error. I also change Hard Disk but the problem is still ongoing.
As i understand, after autofs unmounts disk (network or otherwise) it keeps spinning. It costs energy, so i wonder is there any way to put hard disk to idle state after autofs timeout kicks in?

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I tell the computer to go to sleep and there is a power failure the sleep state is lost. Is there a way to prevent this? I already know about hibernate and I'm using it but sleep is faster and there is no complete loading of the computer (BIOS, Grub and so on) it just goes directly into the desktop. As far as I know the sleep state is done when everything is in RAM and the computer is turned off but the RAM sticks still receive power. Is this true?
P.S. Can this be done with hibernate and SSD drives? As far as I can tell from what I've read it will be the same but with no state loss. Is this true?

openSUSE 11.3 64-bit fully updated, running the latest K3B, 2.0.1. from the Packman repos with the codecs installed. Sometimes it starts up and runs fine, others the splash and then nothing. And again other times it will start and never show up until I reboot and then there it is. When I go to system monitor it will show under CPU% "disk sleep" if that helps. FWIW I have similar issues with Nero 4. I've added myself to the cd rom group and all of that.

It seems like the optimal use would be as a cache for the regular hard drives in my computer. Eliminating the need for a fast hard drive, so I can just use a slow 2TB (~US$100) drive with a SSD cache.
Is there a good way to do this yet?
It seems like it would be nice to be able to exclude some files from caching, for things like bittorrent.

I have written a script that triggers a mail if the server load average goes beyond a specific value.
The mail contains following field Current Load average. Top 10 CPU utilized processes.

But the problem is that whenever there is any disk related activity happens the load gets high and the command (for ex.mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb1, dd,scp,cp)which are the main cause behind the load average doesnt get displayed in top 10 CPU/Memory Utilized processes.
Is there any way of finding top 10 processes for Disk related activity?
Is there a command to check specific processes that's using the most IO/disk usage? I know sar and ps but I want more specific details on IO on individual processes

View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter updating from 11.3 to 11.4 the networkmanager stopped working for me. When I hover over the KDE NetworkManager icon it says Error: Invalid state. If I click it, it says Network Management disabled and checkboxes (Enable networking and enable wireless - both checked). I already tried removing /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state and restarting the network management (/etc/init.d/network restart). Also reinstalling the NetworkManager package.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen i start tomcat6 (on a SLES 11 box) two times without a stop in between, rctomcat6 status results into dead state.
I checked the rctomcat6 start script, in this case when the tomcat6 is already running and a rctomcat6 start is done, it display a msg that "process already running", but it continues in the start function further down & executes the TOMCAT_SCRIPT(dtomcat6) script with the start argument. And after that pid in the tomcat6.pid file gets changed but the process keeps running with the old pid, and hence when we do a rctomcat6 status, it results into dead state(bcoz it doesn't find any process running with that pid).
I think it shouldn't execute the TOMCAT_SCRIPT in this case, so in case when checkpid is success(in start function), i put an exit after the echo msg " process already running", this solves the problem, but is this the correct solution ?

Is there a way to get a list of all packages installed since install (that are currently on the system) and upon re-install run an application that will automatically install those packages. This would save greatly on initialisation time (the re-set up afterwards). Essentially, I want to re-install and/or move to another machine and want to the new install to reflect the system as it currently stands.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy system, setup as a server, has 9 kjournald processes and each one has many worker threads. FOr the most part they just sit idle but I do see one or two occasionally activate with disk activity (which you would expect).
However is 9 processes normal or am I getting stale processes that need to be looked into?
After sleep (sleep to RAM), I want to recover it, but the system have no responses, just the power light is on. Then, I only can turn off the power, and restart it.
How can I check this problem? some logs?

Just now Rhythmbox has stopped working. I can't restart it, so I thought I could kill the process to start it again. Is there something like the windows task manager in openSUSE or another way to list all processes and to kill one? I googled an found a few old threads saying that there is a performance monitor which is able to to that, but I can't find that either.

add to the boot line as grub starts: noirqbalance elevator=cfg
yast2 is more responsif and the processes run on all the cpu's not 3 and 1 as with irqbalance
speedup yast2: export aria2c
result: Gkrellm with a load as little as 5% overall i see all the cpu's working
A fresh install of 11.2 with Gnome (all updates applied, only recommended standard repos enabled) turned the screen black after the predefined time of 5 minutes. The screensaver is set to "Blank screen" and screen lock is disabled. The PC did not wake up again and was not ping'able from the outside. The last words in /var/log/messages are code...

The issue is with Ktorrent.
When I put the machine to sleep (suspend to ram) with Ktorrent running and then wake the machine up again, the torrents that were working do resume. But they resume in a very poor fashion, continually going into and out of "stalled" status. This bad connectivity continues indefinitely.
I have to kill Ktorrent and restart it to get good data flow back for the torrents that are running. Is there an explanation for this? And is there something I can do to make the torrents resume nicely when I bring the machine back from sleep?
Running openSuSE 11.3 w/ a KDE 4.x desktop. Every time I'm using KTorrent, when I come back into the office and "wake" the monitor, I find KTorrent has crashed and I have to restart it. So I'm guessing that KTorrent is crashing either when my monitor goes to sleep mode or when I'm waking it up. I've tried changing some settings but when the system is running, I cannot seem to access the monitor control panel. Pressing the menu button on the side of the monitor does not bring up the monitor menu. There used to be an easily noticed "Desktop Settings" in KDE 3 but I'm not finding the equivalent in KDE 4. How to keep this Samsung SyncMaster 997DF 19" CRT from going into sleep mode?

The fact that it's happening across two different machines makes me wonder if it is some OS setting I've missed, but then maybe neither card/driver supports it from suspend.
I'd really like to get them waking from suspend because training users to use suspend rather than hibernate would be a pain. Also, being able to configure such that it only wakes from suspend and not hibernate/shutdown, as implied in the bios, would allow me to wake machines up for backups etc only when the users are here, rather than on holiday/seconded to another department etc.

After running Thunderbird, or other X applications between my server and my workstation, processes, notably dbus, remain behind on the server. Over time, they pile up, response becomes so poor I must restart the server to sweep them away. How can this be avoided or better dealt with than an occasionala reboot of the server, clearly not an optimal solution.

On my fresh installed 11.4: I boot the desktop entry in GRUB, and it's doing a fast boot. It loads INIT and switchs to runlevel 7. Then the comment:

Or something like that. after a CTRL+ALT+DEL and a press on enter during the driver load, it all works fine. Is that just a standard fault, or should I do something? If so, what?
