OpenSUSE :: State Of Exchange 2007 Support In 11.3?

Aug 13, 2010

I got the impression after attending a LinuxCon session that Exchange 2007 support in Evolution was a solved problem in SUSE. Is the same true in openSUSE 11.3? What packages do I need to install to enable Exchange email/calendar/contact sync in Evolution? And does it depend on IMAP?

Ubuntu :: Evolution And Exchange 2007 - Reading Emails Offline?

Jan 21, 2011

I have a little problem with Evolution and Exchange 2007. I have managed to connect to the Exchange server without problem using MAPI and I can access my emails fine.

The only problem I have is that although I have checked all the options to download messages and automatically synchronise account locally it won't store the email contents locally until I first look open it (or at least preview it).

Unfortunately I have over 5000 emails so this presents a little problem.

I don't know if this is a bug or just how evolution works.

OpenSUSE Install :: Current State Of Affairs With The UEFI/EFI Install Support On A Empty Hdd For X86_64?

Mar 21, 2010

I was thinking of trying out the UEFI support that HP has in my laptop BIOS in the next few days. My reasons is that I get a custom boot logo... and (hopefully) a better boot-speed. What is the current state of affairs with the openSuSE UEFI/EFI install support on a empty hdd for x86_64 does anyone know? (badly worded I apologize) This may seem naive but I have struggled to answer this with most posts being about Mac's for obvious reasons.

Specifically, Do I have to have any custom knowledge on formatting the HDD with a GPT partitions or does the installer do this for you? Secondly, How well does the UEFI bootloader tie in with the config tools in YaST2? (I would like to have UEFI but if it turns into some headache in setting up the boot area by hand each time the kernel updates I will forget it.) I can safely say this will be a machine with only openSuSE installed as an OS, no need for any others or any dual-boot problems. This isn't overly urgent and I will dedicate (at least) a whole weekend to tweaking once I buy a new disk and install openSuSE on it. If nobody knows then I will dive in head first and report how I find it and any problems (and severity).

General :: SSD Without TRIM Support Under Current State?

Mar 29, 2011

There are not SSDs with TRIM support available in my region that fit into my laptop (1.8", IDE, ZIF). I'm running Ubuntu 10.10.

Most articles (or questions on superuser) I've come across concering TRIM (or the lack thereof) date back to 2009, when not many SSDs with TRIM support were available and OS support was still very fresh.

I'm interested in the current situation, but I couldn't find too much information about it.

What are currently the "best practices" for using an SSD without TRIM under Linux?
I've read about the wiper script included with hdparm. Do I understand correctly that I could use this to free unused blocks, e.g. by running it once a month?
Some sources state that HFS+ (the default-filesystem of Mac OS X) doesn't suffer as badly from lack of TRIM as other filesystems. How about linux filesystems? Are there filesystems that are better suited for SSDs without TRIM than others?

Ubuntu :: State Of External Monitor Support

Jan 13, 2010

My experience with external monitors in Linux is harrying at best. It's getting better, but it still ain't perfect. My current experience (I have an nVidia card, with nVidia drivers, on a Vostro laptop):

Turn on computer (booting Karmic).
Connect external monitor
Click on System->Preferences->Display
Redirect to nVidia's tool
Perform at least 8 more clicks to enable secondary monitor.
Realize resolution isn't optimal and set it with another few clicks.
Click Apply
Accept changes
Quit, then really quit, the app.

I always have to set the resolution, it doesn't detect it automatically. The main screen is *always* on the external monitor no matter my settings. I'm screwed if I unplug the monitor but forget to go through steps 1-8, this time disabling the external monitor. I have to replug it in, then turn it off, then I can unplug it. If I unplug the external monitor and plug in another one (going through steps 1-8 twice more) with different resolution capabilities (e.g. a projector), the settings get all messed up again.

Why can't adding an external monitor be automatic? It nearly is on OS X for instance. I plug it in, and it automatically detects the monitor and makes it a secondary monitor, or mirrors them, or turns it on and turns off the laptop screen. All the while being consistent about it. When I unplug the monitor, it knows instantly that I've done that, and reconfigures the laptop screen once again.

I imagine the answer is because no one has stepped up to do it yet, or it's in progress. So my question: what *is* the state of external monitor codes in Linux, and are there any plans to implement them in Lucid? Further, what would be a project, with *user friendly* context, to which I could tune in?

Or, am I not aware of the "right way" to do it?

I define user friendly as roughly the level of kernelnewbies.org . That is, kn.org is my gauge of what I can understand.

Ubuntu :: Get Outlook 2007 Running On Exhcnage 2007?

Does anyone know of any "Wine" goodies that can get outlook 2007 running on exhcnage 2007? I know about running windows in a vm but I'd like to get it running natively. Any suggestions?

I know about Exchange's OWA being a complete re-write, but I didn't know if anyone had solved this. My other question is can I attend go-to-meetings in linux? and if so how? I've only seen this work on windows with active x plugins.

From what I have read there can be performance degradation over time and other issues. Does anyone know how well SSD drives are supported in Linux and also if there is support for the TRIM command or if it is planned?

OpenSUSE :: Fonts Under Wine - Office 2007 Look Shabby

Aug 25, 2010

I noticed that the fonts for Office 2007 look shabby. I am not taking about anti-aliasing or subpixel hinting; but the general appearance of the applications in not even close to what I am used to in Windows. I'll show what I mean through some screen shots below. The text for different options in the ribbon looks awful. Compare this with windows and the text is clearly legible.

Same goes for the advanced options and other interfaces in Office 2007 under Wine. [URL]... when I type in some text in word, the default font (Calibri - Size 11) at 100% zoom looks awful. Here is the comparison of Linux with Windows7: [URL]... I would like to mention here that I have excellent font rendering in other native Linux applications like Firefox and Open Office. I know that users of Ubuntu and LinuxMint do not face this issue... I have seen many video and screenshots where the installation on Linux looks as good as that on Windows. Additionally, I was going through some of the treads on this forum and I realised this was an OpenSuse centric issue. Subpixel Hinting Packages (Ubuntu Lucid Patches) are now available for 11.3.

OpenSUSE Install :: Exchange XP With Windows 7?

Mar 12, 2010

I successfully installed OpenSuse 11.2 64bit with XP 64bit.

Well what I want to do is to exchange XP with Windows 7 64bit. I read other threads where someone describes that he had a virus on his XP partition and had to re-install XP. In this case the recommendation was to install XP again and then just repair grub.

Is it really just that easy? I am doubting that things will go so smoothly? I checked the bootloader; does it help to note the settings and re-enter them after the installation?

OpenSUSE :: Tomcat6 Status Results Into Dead State?

Feb 16, 2011

When i start tomcat6 (on a SLES 11 box) two times without a stop in between, rctomcat6 status results into dead state.

I checked the rctomcat6 start script, in this case when the tomcat6 is already running and a rctomcat6 start is done, it display a msg that "process already running", but it continues in the start function further down & executes the TOMCAT_SCRIPT(dtomcat6) script with the start argument. And after that pid in the tomcat6.pid file gets changed but the process keeps running with the old pid, and hence when we do a rctomcat6 status, it results into dead state(bcoz it doesn't find any process running with that pid).

I think it shouldn't execute the TOMCAT_SCRIPT in this case, so in case when checkpid is success(in start function), i put an exit after the echo msg " process already running", this solves the problem, but is this the correct solution ?

function start() {
echo -n "Starting Tomcat ($CATALINA_BASE)"
if [ -f "/var/lock/subsys/${NAME}" ] ; then
if [ -f "/var/run/${NAME}.pid" ]; then

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - Firefox / Wine And MS Office 2007

Jul 7, 2010

A few days ago I started an unattended install of MS office 2007 by mistake (didn't have the keyboard captured into a windows VM running at the time). For some reason the office installer didn't want to uninstall it and kept crashing even after trying various things to try and get it to uninstall it never did. I then deleted the .wine directory and uninstalled wine via synaptic which got rid of office but didn't get rid of the firefox problem that I'm having. Now whenever I download a word (.doc/.docx and I'm assuming other MS office files).

it tries to open in Microsoft office word which now longer exists on my system with no option to open the doc in OO which I would like it to do. I have been through most of the file extensions for office 2007 and managed to change them back to open in OO in gnome but firefox still thinks that office exists on the system even if a new FF profile is used. Any ideas to what it could be and how I change it back or will I have to reimage my system? Running ubuntu 10.04 amd64 with the stock version of open office.

General :: Getting Office 2007 To Work With Fedora 14?

Jan 7, 2011

From my school I am able to get a free copy of Office 2007 via download. Now from the research I have done, it says that the best way to install Microsoft office is to use PlayonLinux. However, all the instructions I find on it is how to install it using a CD, whereas I will be getting it via a download not a CD. Can I still install it with PlayonLinux with the download? I'm guessing I would just point the PlayonLinux to where my downloaded file is, but I want to make sure before I order it. Also will its functionality be just as good as when its used on Windows. I ask, because even though I am a newbie to Linux, I am liking it and would like to completely switch. However, the copy of office from my school is more expansive than the one I currently have, so if it won't function as well I put my school copy on Windows, but if it does I'll use my school copy on my Linux since I will be eventually attempting to switch to it once I finish my course on Unix/Linux. By the way I have Fedora 14 for a 64 bit system, in case that effects anything.
