OpenSUSE :: Revert 11.3 KDE To The Freshly Installed State?

Jan 16, 2011

I want to revert Suse 11.3 KDE to a freshly installed state. I mean, is there any way to remove any traces of software(s) which have been installed or updated along with any associated repositories.

Ubuntu :: Freshly Installed 9.10 Freezing Up

Nov 5, 2009

I am running a dual boot with Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.10. I have a Gateway Computer with a 2 GHz processor and 1.25 GB of RAM and a 40GB hard drive. My video driver is an integrated Intel variety. I went to Salimane Adjao Moustapha's website: [URL] and copied and pasted all of his post-installation commands into my terminal to run them. Not sure if this guy knows what he is doing or not. He seems very intelligent and has a lot of good feedback on the site.

Basically he seems to be upgrading/updating everything and adding apps for Video, Music, Utilities, Antivirus/Firewall, Open Office, GIMP etc. Somehow my screen freezes up on a regular basis. I can't mouse click on anything and CTRL+ALT+F2 doesn't bring up an instance of my terminal so I can't kill the offending process. It also freezes up sometimes when I first power it up. In any event, my only recourse is to pull the plug on my computer and reboot.

Slackware :: Freshly Installed 13.1 - Initial Fonts Look Quite Out Of Focussed ?

Jan 2, 2011

I have successfully installed Slackware 13.1 with the help of a brilliant guide and some reading on my own. And I am loving it. I have installed few applications and feel that the I understand the system more better than any other linuses I tried.

But, the initial fonts look quite out of focussed(can't find a word) or simply ugly?

I searched and found few threads and a dugan's blog but I got confused as to what to do exactly....How to make fonts beautiful or focussed?... This is my first query.....

Also, a second query is about updating the system...I installed Slackware 13.1 DVD without KDE( Yes I love xfce). As I see I used the "slackpkg" utility to update.

First, uncommented the # sign from one of the mirrors in /etc/slackpkg/mirrors and ran slackpkg update

And the next time when I ran the same, it said "No changes in change log between last update and now". I gather it means my system is upto date but I have doubt about it. How do I conform if the system is upto date? Should I necessarily subscribe to the mailing list? It a thing I haven't done yet.

Ubuntu Installation :: Freshly Installed System Hangs On Boot?

May 8, 2010

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 netbook remix on an acer Aspire One D250, specs below: Processor Name: Intel Atom N270

Processor Speed: 1.6 GHz
RAM: 1 GB
Graphics Card: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950
Storage Capacity: 160 GB

I had to resize the win partition, making a new partition for Ubuntu of about 15GB. I then installed the system. Everything went without problems. I was able to boot once, and verified that everything worked as intented.

However, after that, 90% of the times I reboot the bootup process hangs at a blank screen (with a blinking underscore), immediately after grub selection. If I select "recovery mode" in grub I can see the bootup messages, but the process hangs, all except one time, right after:

Code:
[2.304418] ata2: DUMMY
[2.304487] ata3: SATA max UDMA/133 abar m1024@0x58344000 port 0x58344200 irq28
[2.304584] ata4: DUMMY

and does nothing more. There are no error messages or hints to the source of the problem, to my eyes.I've noticed that sometimes even the loading screen of the live cd will hang indefinitely, leaving me no choice other than a hard-reboot.

The rare times that the system does boot normally, everything works normally. I've tried installing using both the ext4 and ext3 filesystems. I couldn't find anything like this on the forums. Am I doing something wrong? Do you need more details?

Ubuntu Installation :: Freshly Installed System Freezes Just After Loading Screen

Jan 27, 2010

I recently upgraded from Hardy to 9.10 Kubuntu. The install went smoothly, and when I boot up, the loading screen (the one with the progress bar) does its thing. Then I see the 'waiting' cursor (in Kubuntu, the two dots chasing each other around in a circle). I see this for about two to three seconds, then the entire thing freezes up and I can't do anything, including switching to a virtual console. How do I figure out my system's dying words so I can figure out what's going wrong? As a (sort of) aside, when I open files in /var/log for reading with cat <file> | less, I have to Page-Down a whole bunch to get to the most recent stuff. Is there a way to jump to the bottom, or read with something other than what I have been using?

The effect is felt with my Webcam - picture is either garbled or blank not responsive at all. all other video functions in my VM's and Suse seem OK! can I revert or set my kernel back to its prior state? If so how? Also I have both "default" and "desktop" kernels - the problem is the same in each. If I can move the kernel back to its state prior to most recent update can I do it to just one of the kernels to see if it solves the problem?

There is now lag on Alt+F1, lag when mousing over hidden taskbar, lag when moving windows, etc. I was trying to get rid of a trail of images when moving windows around. I created more problems. Things got even better when I tried to change back to openGL:

"Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options. Setting will be reverted back to previous values. Check your X configuration. You may also consider changing advancde options, especially changing the composting type." The same thing happens when I click on "Default", the default options disable desktop effects.

OpenSUSE :: Force KDE To Behave Way Wanted - Revert To Earlier Version With KDE3.5?

Sep 13, 2011

I've recently installed openSuse 11.4 64bit with KDE 4.6 and that's when the trouble started. If I put a data or mp3 cd in the drive it can be mounted. Simple audio cds refuse to mount, giving me only the option to play on one of the audio players. Since I wanted to move some music to the computer I've had to resort to windows to copy files then transfer them. How can I force KDE/Suse to behave the way I want or do I have to revert to an earlier version with KDE3.5? I suspected that System Settings/Removable Devices was where I needed to be but nothing I did worked. So then I tried playing with System Settings/Device Actions and again nothing seemed to work. I can't mount the CD manually,I get this (using su -c "mount etc"

mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: /dev/sr0: can't read superblock

OpenSUSE :: Tomcat6 Status Results Into Dead State?

Feb 16, 2011

When i start tomcat6 (on a SLES 11 box) two times without a stop in between, rctomcat6 status results into dead state.

I checked the rctomcat6 start script, in this case when the tomcat6 is already running and a rctomcat6 start is done, it display a msg that "process already running", but it continues in the start function further down & executes the TOMCAT_SCRIPT(dtomcat6) script with the start argument. And after that pid in the tomcat6.pid file gets changed but the process keeps running with the old pid, and hence when we do a rctomcat6 status, it results into dead state(bcoz it doesn't find any process running with that pid).

I think it shouldn't execute the TOMCAT_SCRIPT in this case, so in case when checkpid is success(in start function), i put an exit after the echo msg " process already running", this solves the problem, but is this the correct solution ?

function start() {
echo -n "Starting Tomcat ($CATALINA_BASE)"
if [ -f "/var/lock/subsys/${NAME}" ] ; then
if [ -f "/var/run/${NAME}.pid" ]; then

Ubuntu :: Install 10.10 On To A Freshly Formatted Hard Drive?

Nov 9, 2010

Ive got a Sony GRt816S laptop which Im trying to install 10.10 on to a freshly formatted hard drive. I downloaded the file burnt it to disk and tried to run it. I get to the first screen where It asks me if i want to run for CD, install or do memory check. - memory checks works fine but the install and run from CD options just hang before I get anywhere near an actual install screen (or anything that remotely looks like one)

I just see a purple ubuntu screen with 4 dots which alternate between red and white ocassionally. I've left it running over night and nothing happens.I read on the forum that it might be the original file, so tested it on a different pc and it worked fine. I know what Im doing with PCs but am a total novice when it comes to Linux, ubuntu or anything thing non-windows related .

Hardware :: No Network Interface Detected On Freshly Bought Acer?

Jul 8, 2010

I bought a nice new Acer Athlon II x2 yesterday with the intention of using it as my main stable, every-day system. As it came pre-installed with Windows 7 Home Premium, my plan was to dual-boot between W7 and an as-of-yet undecided 64-bit Linux OS (probably Slackware's 64-bit variant).

Anyway, it wouldn't connect to the Internet. Everything else seemed fine but this. Being too lazy to really look into it myself at the time, I called up Acer tech support and shared my problem. We did a ping test and she said the problem's with the ISP not the hardware, so I went there to find many of their customers seemed to be getting bad or no connection. Thinking that was likely my problem too, I left it at that.

Well today after work I decided to boot my Puppy Linux USB stick onto the machine to see if it's just W7 being Microsuck, and attempting to connect, Puppy couldn't find the correct module to load that would result in a new interface (network) being detected. Annoyed, I tried Puppy Linux on an old tower I'm currently working on for my parents (still working on that one btw for anyone who remembers me from last week) and it connected fine. I'm actually using that system as I type out this post. Running other Linux OSs on my new machine does the same thing (no connection). Going back to W7, I tried letting them do their diagnostic thing and it came up with this:

Quote:
Local Area Connection doesn't have a valid IP address.
Not fixed.
Clicking for more information I get:
Code:
NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller

Version: 1.0.1.211
