Recently, I found my system can't sleep or hibernation. Whatever I click "sleep(suspend to memory)" or "hibernation(suspend to disk),
the system just lock the screen, don't sleep really.
I don't know how to check it.
My system is openSUSE 11.3 x86_64, KDE 4.5.3 .
I'm running 9.10, how do I wake up from sleep or hibernation on my Dell XPS notebook? I have no problem putting the comp to sleep/hiber but can't seem to work out the keys to wake it up again.
I don't get any responses from the keys even when I try CAPS LOCK or NUM LOCK, so all I can do is reach for the on/off switch.
I am using a old laptop as a server now and its running great! I would like to disable sleep/hibernation when I close the lid (i would prefer the screen still shut off if possible) ...
This has to be done via command line because I don't use a gui ...
Have been using Ubuntu 9.10 since past 2 months and had similar power and screen saver options as I do now after upgrading to 10.04. ( "sleep" after 1 h, "lock screen" after 10 min, "hibernate" when "close lid" on a Dell 600m laptop)
With Karmic, Never had issues with closing the lid while the laptop was sleeping. Three times in a row noticed that if the lid is closed while laptop is in sleep mode, opening the lid results in a blank screen, HDD and CD drive spins, fan turns on. No response to keyboard and/or mouse. Pressing the power key: no response.
The only solution is to shut-down by holding the power key down for a few seconds and reboot. Cant imagine why there would be a problem, but wondering if there are others who also see the same thing and if there is fix to this. Right now, have disabled sleep and will see if problem shows up.
I just installed openSUSE 11.3 but cannot get hibernation (or suspend to disk) working. It does not go to hibernation but instead it just locks the screen. The relevant error in /var/log/pm-suspend.log looks like below.
According to /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/30s2disk-check '/dev/dm-1' must be the swap partition. What i don't understand is that why the error says swap partition is not active. There is no error for swap partition during boot time. Boot message says that swap partition is activated.

After sleep (sleep to RAM), I want to recover it, but the system have no responses, just the power light is on. Then, I only can turn off the power, and restart it.
How can I check this problem? some logs?
My laptop is Acer AS4530, and os is openSUSE 11.4 x86_64, Desktop is KDE 4.6 .
Installed openSUSE into my Thinkpad T410 and noticed that when I closed the laptop lid, the moon icon does not light up.
Reopening the lid and will see a screensaver password screen immediately.
Does this means that the laptop does not have Sleep (or is it called hibernate) mode enable? How can I enable it?
This also happens with Debian that this laptop is dual booted with.
Many processes enter in disk sleep mode and stops (Hang) and return to work after 10 to 20 seconds.
In System Monitor i get "Disk Sleep" like this:

System: openSUSE 11.2 x86_64
The problem still exists after system update and i try run other distributions like kubuntu and i don't get this error. I also change Hard Disk but the problem is still ongoing.
openSUSE 11.3 64-bit fully updated, running the latest K3B, 2.0.1. from the Packman repos with the codecs installed. Sometimes it starts up and runs fine, others the splash and then nothing. And again other times it will start and never show up until I reboot and then there it is. When I go to system monitor it will show under CPU% "disk sleep" if that helps. FWIW I have similar issues with Nero 4. I've added myself to the cd rom group and all of that.

Both hibernate and suspend works fine using the kernel hooks, but after the system resumes from hibernation, it starts to get really sluggish. Iceweasel hits 100% CPU use, and I have to close it and open it again to get it working, and generally the system is just must slower than before the hibernation. I have to reboot to get performance back, and even doing swapoff and swapon does not solve the problem.

Before then, I was mostly using hibernation instead of shutting off the laptop, to allow myself to get back faster to work the next day. Since my upgrade, though, it is impossible for me to resume from hibernation: after the normal boot sequence and the passphrase to decrypt my lvm partition, when it has loaded the information from RAM the screen just stays with a blinking "_" (underscore) in the top left corner.
I have hibernate and uswsusp packages installed. I also installed tuxonice-userui package to do some tests with the hibernate-ram and hibernate-disk commands. While using hibernate-disk (hibernate-ram didn't work, because "s2ram: unknown machine"), my system hibernates correctly, and I saw that during resume it was correctly loading everything from swap and then going back to the "underscore screen", confirming that the resume problem was happening after loading data from swap.
I tried booting using the recovery kernel in grub. For a time it worked, but today I didn't get the chance to make it work. The only solution was for me to boot my kernel by adding the "noresume" option to it, thus forcing it to restart.
I am having a problem reconnecting to the internet when I put my computer in suspend or hibernate. For some reason when I put my computer in any one of these modes it disconnects from the internet, and I have no way of getting back on the internet after that. I use to have the option of "Enable Networking" on my top panel, but it seems to have disappeared for some reason. Is there any way to stay permanately connected to the internet, even when it is in hibernate mode, or could someone tell me how to get the enable networking icon back?
View 14 Replies View RelatedFor the sake of security, I want the screen to be locked after the system is resumed from suspend or hibernation. Now the only way I can do this is to check the options "Lock screen when screen saver is active." in the screensaver preference. But this method is annoying since I have to type the password to quit the screensaver. Is there other way to do this? Thanks.
By the way, I use CentOS 5.2 x86_64.

I ran 11.1 for about a year and had only a few issues; but for some (stupid?) reason, decided to go to 11.2.
Now my hibernate does not work (it worked almost flawlessly on 11.1. Both from shutdown options and when closing the lid.
It seems to disconnect the ethernet, but then just reconnects and resumes normal operation.
This is a IBM T42 laptop. It also does not hibernate when I close the lid, which also worked fine on 11.1.
I can't leave this thing running all the time and I don't want to do a full shutdown every time I stop using it.
I've installed all the updates and upgrades.
I'm running a SUSE 11.3 64 bit with the kernel installed friom repo when I send the hard disk suspension the screen goes black, the SUSE chameleon image appear on the screen for about a second with a progress bar ,then the monitor goes into standby ,the system still running and I have to manually restart. I also tried to run s2disk-r / dev/sdb6 console or via pm-hibernate with similar results. I have ever had similar problems with previous openSUSE (swap partition is not defined, problems of user privileges to be assigned for the suspension) but I was always able to solve them, this time I have no idea what it might be. One thing I noticed is that the swap is not used, even if enabled, but basically I do not even the heavily occupied RAM.

I just recently updated to kernel 2.6.35.10-83, and after the usual hassle of updating my ATI driver, it worked perfectly. Or so I thought ..
When i pushed the sleep button on my laptop to suspend the system, it turned out that it doesn't do so very well any more - it sounds like it turns off the harddrive, and then the screen just goes blank except for a blinking, but unresponsive cursor. Also, pressing numlock/capslock doesn't switch those little lights on/off.
The only thing I can then do is to hold the power button for a while to shut down.
Is anyone else experiencing this, or does anyone have a solution?
I took my Dell Netbook and built some kind of networkstorage around it, with an external USB-HDD.
So far everything is working as expected, the only hassle is that the netbook tends to go to sleep unexpected, for example while playing music, running streamripper or downloading a linux distro.
I couln't find any hints in the syslog or the PM logs what is causing the system to go to sleep.
My problem is that I need to move a moderately complex system from an old system to a new system. The old system is a core 2 duo running on an asus p5k-se (p35 chipset) M/B, Nvidia 8500 gt, 3 x sata II hard disks, 1 x sata dvd, 1 x ide hd, 4GB ram. It runs opensuse 11.1 kde 4 as a desktop system + samba server, apache server, database server + other non-opensuse software. In addition some of the opensuse software is not the default 11.1 versions as later versions were required. The nvidia driver is from the nvidia repo. There are several file systems, some under LVM.
The new system will be a core5 760, asus p7p55d-e M/b (p55 chipset), nvidia 240, 3 x sata II HD, 1 x sata dvd, 4GB ram and possibly 1 x ide HD. This M/B also includes USB 3 & sata III. I have no USB 3 devices but this may eventually change. I have no plans for sata III and believe that it may be better to attach any sata III SSD to the sata II bus.
What I would like to do is to move the hard disks from old system to the new system. What I would like to know is, if the system is left at 11.1, is the system likely to work with the new hardware. If the answer is no, if the system was upgraded to 11.3, would the transfer of the hard disks then work? In order to upgrade from 11.1 to 11.3 using the DVD i believe I should get rid of all non-default repos. I assume that I should also get rid of anything that was installed from them, e.g. the nvidia driver and any software versions installed manually outside RPM. Also is there any default 11.1 software that should be removed either before or after the upgrade to 11.3
I made a hibernation on my laptop.(Suspend to disk) After I tried to wake up, boot screen appeared, then a splash screen with loading bar.After the bar reached 100%, nothing happens. It hangs, no keys are working. Just a splash screen with gecko and 100% loaded bar.

Basically i got my system running from the night before. No problem until this evening around 5pm. (i realised the problem at 5pm) my monitor goes to sleep. My system power still on. It won't respond to monitor/mouse movement. i can't ssh in.
After reboot, check /var/log/messages. The only message there before reboot was at 9am. I am pretty sure everything worked fine around 2pm.
I'm writing a shell script to check the I/O activity of a Linux box and if the server is quiet for a certain long time, the script should let the server go to sleep. But, after some Google searching, I didn't find a answer yet. Is there a shell script command to put a Linux box to sleep?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been running SUSE 11.1 on my HP laptop for over a year. For the most part, I am thrilled with it. However, when I awaken the computer from hibernation mode, I have to go into the Network Settings applet proceed with the wizard in order to get my wireless connection working.
Another irritating aspect is that if I go to a place with a Wireless Hotspot, the computer doesn't automatically pick it up. Again, I have to go through the Network Settings applet to get it working.
I want this to work as it does on Windows XP/Vista where I can put the computer to sleep and when I awaken it, then the wireless connection is automatically there for me, etc.
I have to think I probably need to tweak a setting somewhere, so if someone can tell me where to do this, great!
I am using an internal wireless card (Atheros AR928X PCI-EXPRESS). If you need additional info, let me know.
Anyone know the reason why a sleep( ) on a Redhat Linux OS would cause the system to indefinitely hang? It's doing this every 10 or so calls in my program and I have to press the reboot button on my computer. My program is reading from a UDP port that has messages sent to it 20 times per second. When I sleep I assume the internal UDP buffer is getting more and more filled.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI tried to update one of my home machines with a fresh install. This is far from new to me so I did not expect any problem. But I was proven wrong. First: did install the system as usual. First anomaly: system blocked during the install process but did restart it flawlessly one I tried to eject the DVD from the player. It needed actually that intervention to retake working. It then went to install and froze during the first system start. I rebooted with failsafe settings, it then correctly configured. I reached a beautiful desktop. I performed the updates from the update repository and I joined the nvidia proprietary driver repository (which updated to the G02 driver).
I then rebooted the machine and now I am in trouble. In normal mode the system (dual boot Opensuse, XP) does not boot at all and freezes immediately after hitting enter as before. In safe mode it goes further but does not reach X anymore. It blocks with the following line statement: "system console stolen at line 266". I then tried "startx". But the system goes into a scrolling loop that does not allow me to read the output. how to get at least the error message of the loop? I read some line passing by that the system might have an X11 authorization problem.

Running Opensuse 11.1 on an HP laptop. When I resume from hibernation or standby, I usually have to wait for about a minute for the wireless card to find my router. Is there any way to speed up this time to connect process ?
Interestingly when I boot from cold, the wireless connection is most times ready to go as soon as the boot has finished. So just wondering how I can make things quicker for resume from standby or hibernation
