OpenSUSE Install :: Staying At Run Level 7 - No More Processes To Run

Jun 21, 2011

On my fresh installed 11.4: I boot the desktop entry in GRUB, and it's doing a fast boot. It loads INIT and switchs to runlevel 7. Then the comment:
Code: init: No more processes left
Or something like that. after a CTRL+ALT+DEL and a press on enter during the driver load, it all works fine. Is that just a standard fault, or should I do something? If so, what?

Ubuntu :: 11.04 'Classic' Desktop Speedup For Dragging Windows?

May 7, 2011

For what its worth: Probably mentioned someplace but I did not find it.

I am using 11.04 64 with the Classic desktop. I found that dragging windows was terrible rough. Consumed CPU when dragged.

I loaded CompizConfig Settings Manager. Go to the bottom where the 'Work Arounds' are. Enable 'Don't wait for video sync'.

Made a huge difference for me. Able to make it look and work like 10.10 for the most part. But I like a clean old Gnome look and feel.

OpenSUSE :: Terminate Not Responding Processes?

Just now Rhythmbox has stopped working. I can't restart it, so I thought I could kill the process to start it again. Is there something like the windows task manager in openSUSE or another way to list all processes and to kill one? I googled an found a few old threads saying that there is a performance monitor which is able to to that, but I can't find that either.

Ubuntu :: See What Processes Are Using The Network?

Jul 16, 2010

I keep the network window of System Monitor active on my panel to see if anything is going on with the network.

After the last upgrade, lucid has been having nonstop short, small bursts of network activity, showing in system monitor as received data of approx 60 kb, then 0, then ~60, then 0, continuously. This is occurring before any applications are opened.

Whatever it is, it starts to tie up the processor until performance is unusable.

The processes screen does not offer any clues, perhaps because the data transfers are so small and spaced out. It still should indicate what is tying up the CPU, though. In the attached screencap, you can see the network activity pattern in the system monitor window in the panel.

Is there any way to monitor what processes are accessing the network in order to see what is going on?

General :: How To Monitor Some Processes

Apr 30, 2011

I need to create a small list of processes in a monitor.conf file. A shell script needs to check the status of these processes and restart if they are down. This shell script needs to be run every couple of minutes.

The output of the shell script needs to be recorded in a log file.

So far I have created a blank monitor.conf file. I have gotten the shell script to automatically updated every couple of minutes The Shell script also sends some default test information to the log file.

how I go about doing this part ? A shell script needs to check the status of these processes and restart if they are down.

I have put in the conf file the below commands but I am not sure if this is right.

ps ax | grep httpd
ps ax | grep apache

I also dont know if the shell script should read from the conf file or if the conf file should send information to the shell script file.

Debian :: Rc.d Permanently Stopping Processes ?

Feb 21, 2011

I will be switching to Debian soon and have been forming a large script with a vbox test system to automate my system configuration when I switch.

When I install lamp (Or basically it's equivalent packages) apache and mysql start up automatically.

I could just use update-rc.d to remove the autostart but whenever there's a security or feature update for the package the files get replaced.

In addition, for some reason the system thinks it's a good idea to autostart half a dozen apache2 processes at the same time, sucking up a good 150Mb ram when not doing anything. (Anyone know why?)

How would I stop my system from doing this? Could I "chmod 000" the /etc/init.d files?

Debian :: Hidden Processes On Squeeze X86?

Jul 18, 2011

This morning I ran unhide on my Squeeze x86 netbook. The brute force process detection came up with ahidden process. Repeated runs of unhide with the system in various states continued to show the process, but with a different PID each time.(Or maybe it was spawning new processes and killing itself every second or so. A newer version of unhide, which I compile from source, did describe the process as "maybe transient" or omesuch. Anyway, I've unhide on Squeeze before, and I know that detection of any hidden process is absolutely not normal.)Also, rkhunter found some hidden directories. Of particular note, I think, is /etc/.java, which contains evenmore hidden stuff. It *might* be system-wide preferences for the JVM, but somehow I doubt it.

So, I have two questions...1. Do I really have a rootkit or trojan infection? It looks like it, but I want confirmation that I'm not chasingphantoms. (Or that I am, whichever.)2. If so, how can I prevent a recurrence? FWIW I was running without iptables or any other firewall, but I madesure all my ports were closed; and I did most of my browsing through Chromium, which should have pretty

Ubuntu :: 100 Percent CPU (What Is Backend Under All Processes)

I've just installed the Netbook Edition of Lucid on my MacBook, and it works great, with two issues:
First, each time I start, the computer is extraordinarily laggy (pretty much unusable), until I run System Testing for video, and go through the whole process. Then it seems to work great. Also, I'm having a 100% CPU issue, which switches between my two CPUs. There was nothing under "my processes" that showed any kind of heavy use. But, under "all processes" was something called Backend. I killed the process and now everything seems to be working just fine.
