I have a question. I want to monitor
- CPU usage daily
- RAM usage daily
- Harddisk Space
- top processes
- hardware failure
What commands do I need to run to output the result to a log file? I know there are solutions both paid and free, but my company does not allow. they want linux built in commands or methods to do it. I do not know bash scripting. I know some commands like "df -h" to monitor harddisk space but not sure on the other stuffs.

I have to monitor the %MEM that processes are using, so I use the ps and sort command like this ....
ps -aux | sort -nk4
So this will sort by column 4 so I can see the all the processes that are using the highest %MEM. What I really want is to be able to just display the process name and the %MEM next to it. how to do this?

I regularly use 'df -h' to check usage on each of my primary directories and mount points.
I'm currently somewhat confused by disk usage within my filesystem, so I'd like to do the following:
Display directory size of all, or say, the 10 largest, subdirectories to a specified directory. So, if I passed the root (/) directory, output would list the subdirectory of / with the largest disk usage first and its associated disk usage listed in human readable format (either M or G suffix as appropriate), followed by the subdirectory and usage for the second largest directory and so on.
Can anyone suggest a command or series of commands to do this?

I thought 'killall' would work, but I need to provide the "command" to kill. I'm really looking for a command that will kill all processes that have a particular file/directory open. Currently, my script fails on an 'umount' because there are several processes that have this filesystem open. The command 'lsof' is a good tool to determine which processes have a filesystem open, but I don't really want to write a script that parses through the 'lsof' output to capture PSIDs. Is there a linux command that can kill all processes that may have a particular filesystem open?

I am running Slackware 13.0. I am aware of free -m, vmstat, top, etc. However, none of these programs display how much ram each program is using. Is there a program that displays how much ram each program is using? I run a headless so I'd need a program that runs in CLI.
I know that top command shows %MEM (only two programs were using 0.1%MEM) but after running free -m I only have a total of 400 MB ram left out of my 1.5 GB of ram. Where is all that lost ram?

I usually use "top" command to check the resource usage , it is very good and simple method to know the status ( loading , CPU , memory usage ), but we have many servers so we can't check the servers frequently , so we can't find the problem before the problem happens
Any method / script that I can implement to send us a alert mail if the resource usage reach a specific level , for example , if the CPU usage reach 90% , then send us a alert mail.

I want to be able to check the contents of a text file for a specific string and remove it from the file from the command prompt. I would basically be searching through a number of files and if a specific string is found I would like it removed automatically. pretty much a find and replace, were the replace is nothing. any one got any ideas on how you would do this. I already have the search part sorted just need to be able to remove the string I don't want from the multiple files.

I'm running into a problem where my system is running out of disk space on the root partition, but I can't figure out where the runaway usage is. I've had a stable system for a couple of years now, and it just ran out of space. I cleaned some files up to get the system workable again, but can't find the big usage area, and I'm getting conflicting results. For example, when I do a df it says I'm using 44GB out of 58 GB:
Code:
[root@Zion ~]# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
[code]....

I'm trying to check my server's bandwidth usage in real time, installed the following programs but none worked so far.
Iptraf - No results even when using iptraf -u
Tcptrack - Error : pcap_loop: cooked-mode frame doesn't have room for sll header
Iftop - No results, everything 0b
Are there any programs that displays bandwidth usage in real time and actually works on VPSes? Or getting real time bandwidth usage on a VPS is simply impossible?

I have written a script that triggers a mail if the server load average goes beyond a specific value.
The mail contains following field Current Load average. Top 10 CPU utilized processes.
Code:
ps -auxf | sort -nr -k 3 | head -10
Top 10 Memory Utilized processes.
Code:
ps -auxf | sort -nr -k 4 | head -10
But the problem is that whenever there is any disk related activity happens the load gets high and the command (for ex.mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb1, dd,scp,cp)which are the main cause behind the load average doesnt get displayed in top 10 CPU/Memory Utilized processes.
Is there any way of finding top 10 processes for Disk related activity?

On one of my servers the "free" command tells me that a lot of swap space are in use. What I'd like to do is to determine which processes have been swapped out. I tried issuing "top" and sort by the "swap" column, but this doesn't seem to provide correct values - when performing the same excersize on another server with close to no pages swapped out, the sum when adding the swap value for each process greatly exceeds the swap usage reported by "free". So how do I go about determining the swap space used for individual processes?

I am a bit confused with MPM. I read one the article here: [URL]. Still have few very basic doubts:
1. What exactly is a MPM, a module has a specific function to do whats the specific function of MPM?
2. What are the "multi processes" it handles? Is it connections?
Quoting from the articles:
"The main difference between MPMs and normal modules is that only one of the former can be used and multiple ones can be loaded in the latter".
3. There are multiple MPM but aren't they operate differently and may cause conflict when more than one is loaded and operating?
I am really looking for concept of MPM

I am using
find `pwd` /DirectoryPath -name '*.dta' -exec ls -l {} ; | awk '{ print $NF ": " $5 }' > /users/cergun/My Documents/dtafiles.txt
but this lists all the files in the directories.
I need the total per directory for all dta files.
