OpenSUSE :: Zypper And Package Management (Yast GUI)

Jul 16, 2010

I might switch to OpenSUSE from Debian, but I have my doubts still about package management with OpenSUSE. I'm glad to see that zypper now has the --clean-deps option. Is there a YAST GUI for this as well? I don't like the command line very much. Additionally, is there any way to remove a package with all its config files? In Debian with the Synaptic front end, you can right click on package and click "remove" and it will just uninstall the package but leave its configuration files intact.

But if you select "Completely Remove" it will remove all the configuration files so that if you later install the package again it will use the default settings once again. Is there any way to do this with OpenSUSE? Again, I'd prefer a GUI. Does 11.3 offer Delta RPM updates, and are there many repos that offer delta RPMs? Does Zypper cache downloaded packages by default? And using the YAST package management GUI are packages caches by default? If so, where? Does the YAST GUI try to refresh the package cache all the time, or can I do it manually?

OpenSUSE :: YaST Software Management And Zypper?

Oct 19, 2010

ISTR seeing that
% zypper up -t package
was the equivalent of
YaST | Software Management | Packages | All Packages | Update if new version
available

(without SuSEconfig of course) is this the case, if not, what is the equivalent zypper command?

OpenSUSE :: Can't Update Via YAST Or Zypper

Jun 10, 2010

Turned on my PC as soon as I got home & found that Factory repo had a whole bunch of updates, so I selected to 'switch system packages' & clicked accept.

Whatever I tried to download & install displays an error message

Have even deleted the factory repo & re-added, to ensure it wasn't a change of url causing problems.

I'm running 11.2 64bit KDE 4.4.3

OpenSUSE :: Cannot Install Anything Using Zypper Or YaST

Jul 23, 2011

I don't know why this is happening, however, all of a sudden I am unable to install any packages (from OpenSUSE repos of course) using either Zypper from the CLI or YaST2. Every time I try and install anything, or perfom a zypper dup, I am greeted with the below error message.

OpenSUSE Install :: Yast Zypper Corrupted After Aborting Update

May 8, 2010

I was updating all the installed packages on my system yesterday via YAST. The package manager seemed to hang when downloading a small update for YAST itself (related to ncurses, I think) so I hit the abort button. The package manager quit but now it doesn't work. Trying to start the software management module (Qt version) give me the following error:
UI Syntax Error
Couldn't load plug-in qt-pkg
Check the log file!

So I then tried the console version of YAST. The software management module doesn't work here either. It give me the following error:
UI Syntax Error
Couldn't load plug-in ncurses_pkg
Check the log file!

I Googled a bit and came to the conclusion that for the second error I should try the following command:
zypper install yast2-ncurses-pkg
But this just gives me another error:
zypper: error while loading shared libraries: libzypp.so.619: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
So now it appears that both YAST and zypper are corrupt!

OpenSUSE Install :: Online Updates For 11. 2 And 11.0 Corrupted Yast And Zypper

May 9, 2010

Using 11.2 64 bit on Amd 3200 64I installed 4 Days ago After running a online update yesterday with Yast which was completely finished, starting the machine today, I wanted to add a program Yast reports "UI Syntacs Error Couldn't load plugin qt_pkg" Using 11.0 on P2800 I run an online update 3 days ago. Today I started, the updater reported updates. When I accepted I got the error message "DBus error :Unable to get transaction id from packagekit." Disabling the updater, starting Yast, I got "error initializing the repositorys.Parse error." and "UI Syntacs Error Couldn't load plugin qt_pkg" On both machines I gave the command rpm --rebuilddb On the 11.2 Yast started without error.

I wanted to instal a program when the download was completed I got again the message "UI Syntacs Error Couldn't load plugin qt_pkg"On the 11.0 Yast installed a small Program without error. When I opened Yast online update, I got the "parse error again. When I say o.k. there, Updates are shown and installed. However using the updater kit it reports still "DBus error : Unable to get transaction id from packagekit". How can I fix the DBUS error of the 11.0 (On an 9.0 I had to deinstall Rug and thereafter run only Yast) I can deal with the Parser error myself, checking all Repositories should do it)

OpenSUSE :: Zypper R - Best Version Of Package

Jul 5, 2010

I installed R using zypper some time back, but then I read that I should have used a specific repository called Rpatched. So (note order) I added the repository, then remove R (called R-base) and then proceeded to install the package. Clearly in my repository list there is more than one source of R. Should I have removed the package first and then add the new repository? How in fact does zypper deal with different repositories when they all have the same package? I expect it might choose the most recent version. But what happens when the packages are patched? How does it determine the best version of the package to use?

OpenSUSE :: Zypper Installs Conflicting Package Without Complaint?

Apr 20, 2010

I created an rpm that attempts to install the file /etc/rsyslog.conf (which on my system is already installed and owned by the rsyslog package). When I install this through rpm, I get the appropriate error. However, when I install the rpm through zypper, I get no complaints, and in the end two packages end up owning the file.

Is this the expected behavior? Does zypper force install rpms despite errors? I looked through all the config files, but couldn't find any setting dealing with this case. Is this something that is controlled by a config somewhere? I'm running openSUSE 11.2-0

Code:

linux:/usr/src/packages/RPMS/x86_64 # rpm -i testfile-2.0.1-0.x86_64.rpm
file /etc/rsyslog.conf from install of testfile-2.0.1-0.x86_64 conflicts with file from package rsyslog-4.4.1-3.1.x86_64

OpenSUSE Network :: Get NIS Settings Back Into YaST "User And Group Management"?

Jan 18, 2011

After a disastrous foray into LDAP I restored NIS on a very simple network run by a very simple operator. Everything now works except for YaST on the NIS master. I can't manage NIS users in YaST any more. The option 'show NIS users' is now absent from the 'filter' button up in YaST "User and Group Management" So, after following the YaST route to LDAP there seems no way back...

These are OpenSUSE 11.3 boxes and the slave NIS server can't [obviously enough] delete expired NIS users on the master, although it sees them fine. Disabling or changing NIS server or client on the Master simply restores the 'wrong' settings - nothing is erased or cleaned. How do I clean up NIS controls so YaST sees it properly? or What do I need to do to restore NIS group & user control to YaST?

OpenSUSE Network :: YaST Package Manager Wants IPv6?

Apr 12, 2010

it's a couple of weeks I can't perform YaST updates from my openSUSE 11.2. The reason is that YaST wants to connect to repositories "only" through IPv6, but my network doesn't support it. I quoted only because I suppose it prefers v6 over v4, but it keeps trying to connect without switching to v4 or returning error.

Even if I disabled IPv6 from YaST/Networking/Network Settings, I still have a local scope address. I connect to Wifi using KNetworkManager. The TCP/IP stack should know that if an interface has a local scope v6 address and a global v4 address, it's a bad idea to keep trying with v6. Italian mirror, garr.it, of openSUSE repository both has v4 and v6 addresses. If I try to ping opensuse.mirror.garr.it I ping v4, but if I try to telnet that host on port 80 it tries to connect to v6. Same if I try to connect with Firefox.

How to tell Linux that I don't have IPv6? I'm connecting from University of Naples wireless network. While unina has IPv6 via GARR's Teredo tunnel (2001:760::/32 as I remember), it doesn't reach students' network because DHCP server doesn't release IPv6, nor Zeroconf obtains one. I just would like to use classic IPv4 until, at least for now.

[Code]....

I'm looking for the (32bit) tokyocabinet library. I go through all the hoops like I did in the first example. Nothing shows up! How is that possible? Does opensuse really not have this library in any repository? Does that mean I have to install from source? How can I be sure that zypper searches through all repositories?

General :: Package Management Using The Yum?

Setting up repositories

If you look on the mysql website, the latest community edition is 5.1.50. I suspect the answer might be to do a distribution upgrade via media (i.e.: burn a CD) however was wondering if there's any ways around that?

Debian :: Package Management - Can't Install Its Nb Pdf Reader / Fix It?

Aug 10, 2011

I am new to Debian but a long term user of various other Linux distros, most commonly Ubuntu at home and Xubuntu for my old work computer. I tried Debian 6 LXDE the other day on the older PC, from a live LXF disc. It picked up all my hardware automatically and was so stable (more so than the Xubuntu LXDE distro on the HD) that I decided to install it.

Now that it is on the HD it is still very stable, but I am struggling with package management and installing "stuff".

I am fairly comfortable with the CLI and have managed to get myself into the sudoers group, install grub and add the old Xubuntu to grub manually (I was not impressed that Debian didn't pick up the other two distros on the machine, even after a grub install and update grub and all the other tricks I could think of).

Anyway, back to package mngt:

First, why is there no pdf viewer/reader by default? How do you start building if you can't read the many helpful articles in pdf?

But more annoying, when I try to install pdfedit, epdfview, evince, okular, pdf-viewer, osso-pdf-viewer or kpdf (at least one of which MUST work in Debian LXDE) using "apt-get install" or "aptitude install", as root or as sudo in the Terminal, why do I get "Couldn't find any package whose name or description matched" "Couldn't find package" or "Unable to locate package"? I can't even install synaptic to help!

Then I found that my sources.lst only listed the install CD as a repository (how stupid is that?) so added some repositories to it (eg deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free) and did a sudo apt-get update. And apt STILL can't find anything.

And what is that Debian Installer in the >Menu>System Tools? It asks for a password then nothing opens that I can detect. Is there a GUI for package mngt?

Fedora :: Other Graphical Interface For Package Management?

Apr 12, 2011

I've gone though the system purging/removing what I don't require on my Fedora install using the graphical tool in gnome 3. I then used package-cleanup --leaves to clean up some cruft left behind. yum list installed shows I still have 1031 packages installed, which is about 400 more than similar setups I used to have on Debian, and truthfully on Debian I have more stuff installed that I've still got to install here (gimp, nvidia drivers, etc).

I see a buch of stuff in yum list installed I don't need, so I can use yum remove foo to cleanup some more, but I'm wondering if there's another graphical interface or perhaps and advacned option in the add/remove software application I've been using thus far.
