It's documented in the howto's that you need to have the nomodeset kernel parameter specified if you want to run the proprietary Nvidia driver. But I read in certain posts that this is only required for "older" graphics cards.Can someone shed some light on this? Is the parameter ALWAYS required when running the nvidia driver, or only for certain graphic cards?

On reboot, well there was'nt a reboot just got a blank monitor, no BIOS screen, nothing. After stuffing around with my system for about 1 hour clearing CMOS and unplugging and re-plugging just about everything I managed to get my system back.I do not like the New Neuoveaux (or however you spell it) Graphics drivers, get some wierd artifacts on my monitor?

Edited grub by adding nomodeset after quiet and splash in order to boot from hard disk, still booting that way as I'm writing. The computer is an All In one Pc called ONETWOPWU44. The graphic card is an NVIDIA g210m.
After booting into hard disk I installed the proprietary driver resulting in an alternate of white then gray then black then an Image with red blue and some other colours on the screen, not sure of the order but they came one after an other, right when the login form should appear, I am then able to login by tipping my password into the form and pressing enter, I now that cause I can hear the sound when the system loads but the above described situation continues.
I had the same result with an older nvdia driver it was 253 something, don't remember exactly. Then I downloaded the 260.19.21 driver from nvdia website and installed it, with this one I only got a black screen. I now have a fresh ubuntu 10.10 copy and would like to be guided in making this work. How do I install the driver corectly or how do I enable nouveau 3d support?
I'm installing 10.10 on a desktop with Nvidia 6150 that needs nomodeset on boot or i get the blank screen upon boot. I had to force the live CD to nomodeset when booting from the CD. I was finally able to install, but upon the first boot from the hard drive I'm getting the blank screen again. How do I boot with nomodeset and get to my installed ubuntu. Once I get there i can edit my grub settings.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am impressed with 11.4 and am happy that for the first time ever I don't need to install a kernel patch to support my on-board nVidia graphics. However, the on-board sound no longer works now. I don't know how to set it up in phonon. My device number 0 in phonon is MCP72XE/MCP72P/MCP78U/MCP78S high definition audio, and I assume this is my nVidia on-board sound card. The driver information states snd-hda-intel.
How can I check what is wrong with it? It did work fine on 11.2 right up to the 11.4 installation. I do get system sounds (like the start-up and shut-down sounds), but nothing from any application, e.g., firefox playing a video. Based on the advice from another thread I tried: speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav This does not produce any sound, but gives the following information: speaker-test 1.0.24.2

I have not dug into Ubuntu for almost a year now (Since Jaunty, really). I am trying to come to grips with Grub2, but have just now encountered it in Lucid. I am having a terrible time with the graphics chipset, and it may well be that Ubuntu cannot be used on this computer (an older laptop with the dreaded Intel 82845G graphics chip). There are a number of older bug reports that it is unsupported, but some success in more recent versions.
Anyway, one suggestion has been to add i915.nomodset=1 to the kernel boot line. Now, this was a cinch in Legacy Grub, but I have been reading Grub2 wikis and tutorials for two days now, and I know about the config files, but I cannot find anything which tells me specifically how to add a parameter to the kernel boot line.
I recently enabled noapic on my laptop because it was experiencing strange input freezes on several distros that I tried.Ok, so it does not use the ioapics. My question is, what does this mean for the system? If it used apics before, what happens now? edit: Added "kernel.semmni = 2048" to the tail of /etc/sysctl.conf and then ran "sysctl -p". End result is an unknown key error (apparently kernel.semmni isn't the valid name anymore?).

I am trying to do a fsck on my ext3 partition, but so far failed to let the system come up in single user mode and having the partition mounted read only. It says in the kernel parameter that it is read only (RO) but still mounts it RW. A remount with mount -o remount,ro does not work, since / is always busy. what to do to get a fsck done? I don't want to boot into a rescue system, this should be possible on a running system (like Windows does it, when rebooting)

I have an issue that is fixed by changing the lpfc driver to run using MSI interrupts. This is done by adding "options lpfc lpfc_use_msi=2" /etc/modprobe.conf.local file.
Is there a way to make this change using kernel boot parameters?

When I try to install the driver using Module Assistant it says "Bad luck, the kernel headers for the target kernel version could not be found and you did not specify other valid kernel headers to use." It also says "If the running kernel has been shipped with Debian please install the package linux-headers-2.6.32-trunk-amd64." The kernel I am running is the one currently in Debian "Sid".

I can mv xorg.conf to xorg.conf-pre and nexuiz will fire-up. Without 3d of course. I spent an hour or so last week going over my xorg.conf but it just ain't broke!

It was no surprise that I needed to reinstall the nvidia driver after a 2.6.32-5-686 kernel update a couple days ago, but I was surprised that it didn't work. I've had to drop back to a kernel I compiled a few weeks ago, which is basically the stock 2.6.32-5-686 from that time, with a timer frequency of 1000 and desktop preemption.

I don't see it in this one, but on a previous attempt, I saw an error message that said no nvidia graphics card was found. I've been suspicious that the card is slowly dying, based on problems like gray blocks on the screen or (in an older lenny install) persistence of the contents of a window appearing inside a terminal, when I switch desktops from the one where the browser is open to the one where the terminal is open. Scrolling the artifact off-screen and back, or window-shading the terminal and then un-shading it causes it to re-draw correctly.
I have had this error for way too long. This post will be done in parts. I've had it for months now and I'd like to solve it. Every suggestion on linux forums, ubuntu forums, or some XYZ-linux blog seems to either work for just one boot or none at all. since I have updated my kernel on several occasions, I have also re-installed my NVIDIA kernel module by downloading the run file from NVIDIA's website. It also follows instructions from this post. I have installed the linux header files and the xorg-dev files from repository

Problem: computer and graphics card had been running for months without problem. For some reason, last night, things locked up...wouldn't think it's related, but happened when I noticed I was locked out of creating new folders on my usb attached My Book storage drive. So, from terminal I tried to sudo change permissions to read/write. Everything locked up. Now, every time I reboot it states needing to use low graphics mode "Screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly."
When I check the error log I see: "(EE) Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module.."(EE) NVIDIA(0): ***Aborting* Screens found but none have a usable configuration. Fatal Server Error - no screens found"
If I try to then start in safe low graphics mode or restart X, I get the Ubuntu splash screen with the 5 dots that turn red to show progress...but nothing ever happens. I can switch to VT 1, login at command line, and type "startx" and then the graphical desktop loads just fine. Video playback, etc. is perfect and fine - not in low graphics mode at all. System seems totally normal.
However, I have to go through these steps each time I reboot. Also, I noticed that when I try to boot from Ubuntu Live CD I can't. I get as far as picking English as a language, then screen goes blank and goes to power saving mode (no signal being sent). This greatly concerns me as even though I have a work around for now - getting to command line then startx'ing - if I ever needed to reinstall from the CD, it seems I can't.

downloaded the driver packages, install the dependencies from the shell, and then i pressed CTRL+ALT+F2 to get out of X and into text mode. I stopped my gdm with the command: sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stopand then i tried to install the driver using: sudo sh (on my NVIDIA driver- his version was a bit outdated compared to the one I downloaded)But here is where the problem starts, as I go through the installation process and click yes, i reach the "progress bar" then the screen says "unable to build the NVIDIA kernel module". and then it just exits. What is going on here? Am I missing some other package or file?

Recently ubuntu was updated to a newer kernel 2.6.35.27 from 2.6.35.25. Under 2.6.35.25 the driver is working. Under 2.6.35.27 the desktop is not starting, and I can login to a 'console'. After login i try to run startx, and gets some errors. See attached Xorg.0.log.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.With the last update, I have installed the kernel 2.6.32-33.And I have the message "module nvidia failed to load" in Xorg.log.0 My "current" nvidia module is 195. I have tried without success to reinstall nvidia. What I must do ? Wait for a new update of nvidia ?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running my PC on Lucid. It has been working fine, but suddenly the other day I got an error message when booting, saying that Nvidia kernel module failed to load. I had to boot in low graphics mode. The only thing i can think of that had changed is that I had recently upgraded to latest Linux kernel 2.6.36-25.I have tried carefully following tips on numerous threads on this forum and others, but still no go. I have purged nvidia drivers and reinstalled nvidia-current (also tried nvidia-glx-185). However, when I then do <sudo modprobe nvidia>, I get this message:

When I go to System>Administration>Hardware Divers, it shows Nvidia-current as present but not currently activated.I have blacklisted vga16fb and nouveau in blacklist.conf, done <sudo nvidia-xconfig> etc.I am at a loss as what to do next, and am still new enough to Linux to not be in a position to fiddle to try fix it myself.
