I am an ex-VMS systems programmer/DBA. I have been given the task of installing Oracle 11gR2 on Linux VMware. I have opened a ticket with Oracle on this, but thought I would see if anyone has already done this.
I'm trying to install Oracle DB on OpenSuse (is it smart, because it's not certified for that OS?)..and I've set oracle parameters using oracle script, but when I'm runnign through oracle installation, kernel parameters check reports that parametersa are 'n/a', like oracle OS account cannot access those parameters..
tried hard to install oracle-11g-R2 in my CentOS5.5,during the install,I did all my job step by step as this article says: Q1: when I 'su oracle 'sqlplus /nolog',it said:"sqlplus: error while loading shared libraries: libsqlplus.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory".The article has a ution for this problem:"Solution: Install libaio and libaio-devel packages. If packages already installed and error still occurs try execute "ldconfig" as root."Then i executed "ldconfig" as root ,and run "sqlplus /nolog",it occured another problem:"SP2-0667: Message file sp1<lang>.msbSP2-0750: You may need to set ORACLE_HOME to your Oracle software directory"
I installed Vmware the other day on my laptop, ran fine, installed a couple of programs. Now, a few days later, booted it up tried to find Vmware, but its not there in the menu. Oracle VM Virtualbox is installed (was installed before vmware, but had problems with getting files over to it), has that somehow got rid of vmware? If so, how do i get rid of Oracle VM?

I have installed fc12 on my core2due machine, and I have installed the vmware server on it, its rpm is installed successfully with out any error, after that a message is displayed
The installation of VMware Server 2.0.2 for Linux completed successfully. You can decide to remove this software from your system at any time by invoking the following command: "rpm -e VMware-server".
Before running VMware Server for the first time, you need to configure it for your running kernel by invoking the following command: "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl".
I tried this command and find the this message
[Akram@localhost Downloads]$ su -c "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl" Password: Making sure services for VMware Server are stopped.
None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] yes
Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.
Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.4.2", while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3". This configuration is not recommended and VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3" anyway? [no] yes
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?[/usr/src/linux/include]
Now it asks me in last lines that "What is the location of Directory of C header files that match your running kernal?"

I am using redhat linux 5. I am trying to install oracle 10g of linux version. When I click setup.exe from first CD. It says 'couldn't display /media/mydisc/setup.exe".
I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.
I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/
I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.
I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.
In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.
One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.
It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.
The network can be restored by rebooting the image.
I'm trying to access the VMWare console from firefox using the VMWare plugin. The problem is that it doesn't work on Firefox version 3.6.8. So how can I access the console?
I've AMD64 system with Ubuntu 11.04 installed. It's been rough ride for me to install oracle-xe-universal. I've already spent more than 2 days on this. Still unsuccessful.
1) First I downloaded the packages libaio_0.3.104-1_i386.deb and oracle-xe-universal_10.2.0.1-1.1_i386.deb
(gave me dependency error for libc6 (>= 2.3.2), I modified the control file to remove dependency and rebuilt the package) (now worked fine) Oracle xe is now installed. Then I tried to start the DB it started but it's HTTP client never started. So I decided to uninstall the oracle-xe=universal. None of the sudo apt-get remove oracle-xe-universal command's didn't worked for me. So i went for manual uninstallation directions as per oracle link.
rocky@ubuntu:~/git/mygit/edas2/libaio$ sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture oracle-xe-universal_10.2.0.1-1.1_i386.deb dpkg: warning: overriding problem because --force enabled: package architecture (i386) does not match system (amd64)
....
Even in applications menu I don't see the if oracle has been installed. So i conclude first time installation was ok but somehow http client didn't worked. After manual uninstallation, second installation didn't even loaded/installed the oracle-xe in init.d directory.
Am new to linux and am trying to install NS2 on Fedora 14 running on VMware, the am following the instructions at: , however, on step 5: tclcl installation am receiving the follow error and have tried to look at other posts but no luck.
I've looked through the forums and found that installing openmotif may fix my problem. I tried it but to no avail. Here is my challenge, I'm trying to install Grid Engine on my VMWare fedora installation. I get this dependency error:
Quote: rpm -i sun-sge-bin-linux24-x64-6.2-5.x86_64.rpm error: Failed dependencies: libXm.so.3()(64bit) is needed by sun-sge-bin-linux24-x64-6.2-5.x86_64 libXp.so.6()(64bit) is needed by sun-sge-bin-linux24-x64-6.2-5.x86_64 sun-sge-common = 6.2 is needed by sun-sge-bin-linux24-x64-6.2-5.x86_64
I installed the latest version of openmotif and when I do a search for the two files, there is no libxm.so.3 but libxp.so.6 is there. When I try to install the rpm again I still get the exact same error.

I am in process of installation of Oracle 11gR2 on fresh installed Ubuntu 10.04. I don't know whether it is right place to ask this question here or not; even I have asked this question in oracle forum ; I am asking here too. Oracle people says that its OS level library access issue and/or installer is not able to get the right file to proceed further.

I have wasted lot of time in installing rpm packages which are needed for oracle 11g on Fedora 10. Packages dependencies are going in circle. Is there any better to handle this package install and its dependencies? I was using rpm -ivh command. Following are required packages. Tried to down load packages which are not present in /var/log/rpmpkgs.
In some cases I got higher versions of the following packages. binutils-2.17.50.0.6-2.el5 compat-libstdc++-33-3.2.3-61 elfutils-libelf-0.125-3.el5 elfutils-libelf-devel-0.125 glibc-2.5-12 glibc-common-2.5-12 glibc-devel-2.5-12 glibc-headers-2.5-12 gcc-4.1.1-52 gcc-c++-4.1.1-52 libaio-0.3.106 libaio-devel-0.3.106 libgcc-4.1.1-52 libstdc++-4.1.1 libstdc++-devel-4.1.1-52.e15 make-3.81-1.1 sysstat-7.0.0
