I am looking for a package in openSUSE 11.3 that is equivalent in function to Debian and Ubuntu's deborphan, which cleans up leftover packages and temporary files and directories after updates and upgrades.

I did a previous search before coming here, and I found some alternatives but in very old threads. Though, one of the most mentioned was one called StarDict. What do you think about this one? Is it still good nowadays or are there other alternatives?

Recently I got a requirement to update the kickstart file in Suse to install all the available packages by default during provisioning. I have been doing this in RHEL by using the macro @everything. get an equivalent of @everything for package installation in SUSE.

I've ran into something rather odd. I've installed wine and Office 2007. If I am to open a office 2003 (doc) or office 2007 (docx) file, it will open wine and office 2007 to edit the file. This is the desired behaviour. If I am to open an office 2003 (doc) file in firefox, openoffice will be opened. If I am to do the same with an office 2007 (docx) file, wine and office 2007 will open.where to start to get wine/office 2007 to open files from firefox?

I just found out about Libre Office. I am currently using Open Office on my Netbook (ubuntu 10.10), and NeoOffice on my Macbook (OS/X 10.6.7).
QUESTION: I have some backups using these formats: .sdw, and .odt. Can Libre Office read documents saved in these (StarOffice / Open Office) formats?
FWIW: I would have preferred to use OO on both machines, but unfortunately OO never fixed a problem with printing envelopes in the Macintosh version. Hence my use of NeoOffice.

I have both installed, but since LO is going to be the way Ubuntu goes for office applications, can I easily have my system setup for native LO? Native being if I double clock on a .doc file it will start up LO's Write program instead of OO.Will just removing OO achieve this or is there an easier way? I looked for file associations and didn't find it.

I've just discovered the app TuneIn on my Android phone, it allows you to access radio stations that broadcast over the net, as well net-only ones, in an easy searchable interface (the 'backend' is the website radiotime.com).
Is there a way to do a similar thing on Opensuse? Currently I have a small list of stations in banshee which I had to manually add - a very painstaking manual process. Is there a plugin for banshee or another program that does this well?

Sometime ago I realized my Open Office had changed, I don't remember having done anything in particular but today it isn't the regular open office but what I believe is a KDE version or idk. The theme changed and instead of regular menus I get "window" menus, in the sense that they get effects as regular windows. It's hard to explain it.

I tried uninstalling it and installing open office and also in the soft center open office is more than once, but I tried the different versions and I still get the same problem.

I have done a bit of research on WineHQ and other places, but cannot seem to get Office to install. I am running openSUSE 11.2 and from what I have read, Office should install and run without issue. I have a relatively fresh install, but had added the winetricks (with lots of errors and no success) and then afterward uninstalled wine and reinstalled. (I hope that makes sense). After installing Wine the first time, I could get to about 2/3 installed before wine crashed. Now after the reinstall It crashes almost immediately after the install process begins.

As in title, I'm using Libre Office on my OpenSuse 11.4 and there is no 'Record' option under macro. I have search the net and some suggest this solution - to check box 'Enable experimental features' in Options. I did that but still no Record Macro at all.

I noticed that the fonts for Office 2007 look shabby. I am not taking about anti-aliasing or subpixel hinting; but the general appearance of the applications in not even close to what I am used to in Windows. I'll show what I mean through some screen shots below. The text for different options in the ribbon looks awful. Compare this with windows and the text is clearly legible.
Same goes for the advanced options and other interfaces in Office 2007 under Wine. [URL]... when I type in some text in word, the default font (Calibri - Size 11) at 100% zoom looks awful. Here is the comparison of Linux with Windows7: [URL]... I would like to mention here that I have excellent font rendering in other native Linux applications like Firefox and Open Office. I know that users of Ubuntu and LinuxMint do not face this issue... I have seen many video and screenshots where the installation on Linux looks as good as that on Windows. Additionally, I was going through some of the treads on this forum and I realised this was an OpenSuse centric issue. Subpixel Hinting Packages (Ubuntu Lucid Patches) are now available for 11.3.

I know, why did I uninstall Open Office. Well I am running 11.3 with KDE 4. I did a clean install in December 2010. This is the first time I have updated an old database. I updated the database and then opened a new writer document and pressed F4. OpenOffice closed.
When I recovered the documents I tried F4 again and it closed. So I looked on this forum and found this: OpenOffice crash if I view database Post #8 seems to have the problems solved. So I went to YAST and unticked OpenOffice. I then went to OpenOffice.org and after reading the information about distributions own packages. Also realising that it was a tar.gz, I got cold feet and decided against installing from OpenOffice.org.
I went back to YAST and ticked OpenOffice, but it does not appear to be there anymore. I tried the start icon (bottom left corner), but it is not in there. I have tried opening a document, but it was opened with Okular. I think I have not ticked a box I should have. OpenOffice has a lot of entries in YAST, how do I capture the information so I can show it here? Or do I need to take several screenshots.

After installing lots of stuff from the main repo (letters Q though U). I, apon starting to catalog the missing software that V-Z needed (and I did not have) I found that open office would not print letters on the screen. I tried rebooting (the computer)and reinstalling (open office is what I reinsalled) and nothing worked. I then tried to type on to a txt document using Kwrite and it wored at first then it started to type symbols and a pop up on the lower left showed the symbols then ABC etc. I clicked on ABC and Kwrite worked but open office did not. If it helps I installed some program that had to do whith typing python. I need to know the following
1:Is it a bug or my mistake?
2:How do I get open office up and running?

I installed openoffice. installation seemed to go well, but openoffice doesn't show up under main/applications/office. in fact - it doesn't show anywhere.
I did find it using "find files/folders" ...in the folder:
There's a file called soffice of Type: Shell script that runs openoffice. How do I add this to my menu?

I'm trying to migrate to Ubuntu from Mac OS X. I have set up a dual boot on my MacBook and I am currently working to get everything I need for my computing-life up and running in Ubuntu.
I have found almost everything, expect a speech synthesis similar to the one native to Mac OS X's.
I use the OS X speech synthesis to have text I have written read back to be, I'm not blind; just really good a missing small words. What I don't want is to have all the menus and bottoms read out, only text I have selected.
I have tried something with 'festival' and some GUI overlay (think that is what it is called) but it read absolutely everything out loud (and sounds like Amiga's speech engine, i.e. a quite low quality).
In my Mac OS X I have a really nice set up (with a voice called Alex) where I can start speech of selected text with "cmd + ; " and stop it with " cmd+' " (two shortcuts not used by the system).

I have a DBA that needs to be able to do a "setgroups" on Linux. He had the functionality on AIX but now we're migrating to red hat. In-case you don't know the setgroups command in AIX; it allows users to drop groups that they belong to for that login session. He wants to be able to do this so that he can drops groups for testing. Does anyone know of any equivalent commands to setgroups or another way of dropping groups for that session and not permanently?
