OpenSUSE :: Uninstalled Open Office And Reinstalled But It Has Disappeared?
Feb 23, 2011
I know, why did I uninstall Open Office. Well I am running 11.3 with KDE 4. I did a clean install in December 2010. This is the first time I have updated an old database. I updated the database and then opened a new writer document and pressed F4. OpenOffice closed.
When I recovered the documents I tried F4 again and it closed. So I looked on this forum and found this: OpenOffice crash if I view database Post #8 seems to have the problems solved. So I went to YAST and unticked OpenOffice. I then went to OpenOffice.org and after reading the information about distributions own packages. Also realising that it was a tar.gz, I got cold feet and decided against installing from OpenOffice.org.
I went back to YAST and ticked OpenOffice, but it does not appear to be there anymore. I tried the start icon (bottom left corner), but it is not in there. I have tried opening a document, but it was opened with Okular. I think I have not ticked a box I should have. OpenOffice has a lot of entries in YAST, how do I capture the information so I can show it here? Or do I need to take several screenshots.

Every time I booted in 9.10, Python requested a password. I didn't plan to do any programming very soon (I'm new to Linux, although I know Unix) because I'm just learning the shell, etc, so I decided to uninstall Python through the Package Manager. I selected all of the installed Python modules and when I clicked "Apply" I was informed that there was one module (Python minimum something) that would seriously effect the whole system, so I unchecked that module and then ran the uninstall. When it completed, Firefox was gone, the two music players I had installed where gone, I couldn't log out and when I try to reboot I get a message "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode" and I go through several other menus, but I still can't get the system to boot.I assume a reinstall is in order, but should I "clean up" any of the remaining Linux modules/partition? And what's the best way to do that?

I just found out about Libre Office. I am currently using Open Office on my Netbook (ubuntu 10.10), and NeoOffice on my Macbook (OS/X 10.6.7).
QUESTION: I have some backups using these formats: .sdw, and .odt. Can Libre Office read documents saved in these (StarOffice / Open Office) formats?
FWIW: I would have preferred to use OO on both machines, but unfortunately OO never fixed a problem with printing envelopes in the Macintosh version. Hence my use of NeoOffice.

I have both installed, but since LO is going to be the way Ubuntu goes for office applications, can I easily have my system setup for native LO? Native being if I double clock on a .doc file it will start up LO's Write program instead of OO.Will just removing OO achieve this or is there an easier way? I looked for file associations and didn't find it.

After installing lots of stuff from the main repo (letters Q though U). I, apon starting to catalog the missing software that V-Z needed (and I did not have) I found that open office would not print letters on the screen. I tried rebooting (the computer)and reinstalling (open office is what I reinsalled) and nothing worked. I then tried to type on to a txt document using Kwrite and it wored at first then it started to type symbols and a pop up on the lower left showed the symbols then ABC etc. I clicked on ABC and Kwrite worked but open office did not. If it helps I installed some program that had to do whith typing python. I need to know the following
1:Is it a bug or my mistake?
2:How do I get open office up and running?

Sometime ago I realized my Open Office had changed, I don't remember having done anything in particular but today it isn't the regular open office but what I believe is a KDE version or idk. The theme changed and instead of regular menus I get "window" menus, in the sense that they get effects as regular windows. It's hard to explain it.

I tried uninstalling it and installing open office and also in the soft center open office is more than once, but I tried the different versions and I still get the same problem.

When I open an open office document from an NFS share it always opens as readonly. This was a problem I had on Arch linux and the fix was to change the locking options in the soffice script but I've tried that fix here and it doesn't work. I've seen a lot of discussions but they all go back to changing the locking options in soffice, has anyone got any alternative fixes or one that definitely works with locking?

I'm having sporadic issues with the openoffice.org program. Sometimes, power point presentations will crash the program and then I can't open any open office programs without rebooting the computer. The problem seems to be just with powerpoint files and I'm not sure what the issue could be.

The only problem I've encountered so far is with my soundcard - a Soundblaster Audigy (basic version). I'm dual booting with XP and followed the exact same procedure as with 11.1. Used GParted to shrink the Windows partition (and yes, I did defragment beforehand) First there was no sound with Opensuse, which didn't really bother me too much as I assumed I needed to d/l some drivers, so fine. I restarted and booted into Windows and find that I have no sound in any applications, yet they appear to be playing, mp3, waves etc and no problems indicated by windows or other programs, in effect the card is fine but not outputting. Reinstalled drivers - no success. Uninstalled the soundcard from Device Manager, didn't work either. In the end I had to physically remove the card,
reboot into windows, then shutdown, insert the card again, then install the drivers. This fixed the problem, but anytime I boot into Opensuse, the same problem occurs, very strange. I'm thinking there may have been a problem during the partitioning stage, maybe some stubborn little windows file didn't want to move during defrag' and got lost. That's the only idea I have at the moment. Tried to remove the Grub Bootloader with 'fixmbr' command, but it still loads.

I can't get open office to run. I believe I need jre1.60 to run this. I have jdk installed since I need this for java programming. Can I also install jre1.60 and use jdk as well? I am taking a class in Java programming so I don't want to screw up my programming environment. However, I need to use OO powerpoint for class as well.

I have been on the open office site, and tried several different downloads for Open Office 3.2. However, once I unpack the gzipped file, I get several deb packages from within the archive. Could someone kindly point me to a link where I can d/l a single deb package so I may easily install / (upgrade to)version 3.2? FWIW, I am using Karmic with the latest updates and OO ver. 3.1.1 on my netbook.

On tis end I have a HP G71 laptop and Slackware v13 ...For whatever insane reason Slackware v13 does NOT come with Open Office and the user has to install the program on their own. With that said, I've gone the following route, several times and with zero success ... so you tell me:
.1. <usr> d/l the applicable Open Office files
.2. <usr> unpack the files by way of tar -xvp and end up with *.rpm files
.3. <usr> Switch to the RPM directory and use rpm2tgz to convert the *.rpm files to *.tgz files.
.4. <usr> to <root> su -c installpkg ooo*.tgz and do the same with openoffice*.tgz. All seems to go well here.
.5. <root> switch to desktop directory and remove Debian, Suse and Mandriva files.
.6. <root> convert Slackware file to *.tgz
.7. <root> installpkg openoffice
Using the above noted steps all seems to go well, until after re-booting and starting up "x" as either ROOT or as a USER ... nothing! The "x" window displays show the Open Office files to be there but clicking on them, all I get is a bouncing cursor for a few seconds - then nothing!

I borked my perfectly good 11.2 install, while replacing a failing hard drive. I reinstalled, and now my sound doesn't work - or not quite. I get the left front channel, nothing else. Battle Duel crashes due to sound errors - or I probably wouldn't care.

If Open Office had any problems saving in different file formats than the open format (which I know it doesn't have problems with) and rtf (which I know it does). I have to use it for school and I do not want to lose things like bullets, numbering and especially not information when saving in Microsoft Word formats.

I'm trying to use Open Office presentation, and it makes me angry and a little disappointed because it feels like it is everything else than user friendly...Like 50% of all the options are grayed out and it is really irritating! It started when i tried to view the presentation, and advance to the next image by pressing the mouse button like in power point, and it is so bad layout i don't understand how, and it makes it even worse when i can't click 50% of eventual solutions.

Have installed msttcorefonts but they're not showing up in Open Office 3.2. I've tried restarting the machine and even a fresh install of Open Office to no avail. Can't recall doing anything special to make them available in Open Office in past; has something changed or am I missing something obvious?
OK, solved it; for anyone else having trouble, I completely removed ttf-mscorefonts-installer package then reinstalled it; upon reinstallation I got a EULA to accept and everything went as expected.
