Ubuntu :: Recommended Alternative For Xmarks?

Jan 30, 2010

I've been having some issues with the speed of firefox recently (on a netbook) and have been trying out other browsers such as chrome and midori. Currently I'm using xmarks, which fits my needs nicely however, I'm looking for an alternative that gives similar functionality and would allow me to access my bookmarks from several different computers (using both midori and chrome browsers).

xmarks has a development version for chrome, which is not working at the moment, and I cannot find any plans for xmarks in midori.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Recommended Replacement For NVIDIA 8800 GT?

Jun 30, 2011

my PNY NVIDIA 8800 GT just stopped working yesterday before i buy a new grapic card, id like to hear your opinion on which one to buy. basically i want a high end card. google search with keywords like "high end card linux" did only give me cards for around 2008. id like it if there is a newer card, however i am open to buy an equivalent of my NVIDIA 8800 GT.

my requirements in order: at least as good performance as the NVIDIA 8800 GT good and reliable driver with 3d support gnome2/KDE4 with compiz and good performance maximum price of 150,00

low heat
low sound
open source driver
directx11 and opengl 3.3
possibility of 2 monitors
possibility of 3 monitors

i believe in open source, but in this case its just got to work with high performance 3d. on linux i play SPRINGRTS which worked on 1920*1080 like a charm. on windows - which is not a big part of this - i like to try out new games (thus dx11).

other hardware:

Intel E8400
MSI P35 Neo3
4 GB DDR2 Ram
400 W power supply unit

however i never had big problems with NVIDIA before, so im probably gonna stick with NVIDIA, but i´m open to new stuff! not all of these requirements must be met. as for now, id go with one of these cards (links in german):

Gigabyte Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 OC
Nvidia Geforce 9600GT * 1GB * 1024MB DDR3 * 9600 GT * PCI-Express
AXLE nVidia GeForce GTS250 1024 MB Grafikkarte (PCI-e, 1GB DDR3 Speicher, 128-bit GTS 250 Windows 7 DVI, VGA, HDMI)

and my old one again:

Nvidia Geforce 8800GT * 512MB * PCI-E * (8800 GT) * HDMI Output * DVI * VGA *

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Removing Recommended Updates In Yast?

May 20, 2011

When I open Yast's software management in opensuse 11.4, there's like 400mb of changes it basically forces me to install. For instance, flash player, libre office stuff, gstreamer etc.

I remove these from the download list, but when I go install something like the nvidia driver I need, it still downloads and installs all that other stuff first, whether I remove it from the list or not. It still makes me agree to the flash player terms or it won't install anything.

How can I get all these recommended updates off of there and just install what I want to individually?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Alternative Music Player For 11.2-64?

Mar 30, 2010

SUSe 11.2-64 running on a core quad Intel motherboard. In the room here are 3 computers with outputs through a Behringer mixer to a Sony surround sound system--it sounds better plus I dont have the spider web of a separate sound system for each machine. 11.2-64 has been excellent so far with the exception of the music player--Amorak. Someone decided to leave out any sound contour tools. I also have Banshee and MPlayer but have experienced various problems with them. Amorak, at least for my use isnt too lame but whoever "They" are decided to do away with the graphic eq.I like the ability to build playlists with Amorak which is missing in some other programs without an exercise in file system manipulation. Any one have suggestions?? One note I will add here is that in Windows 7 64 bit professional, which I am forced to use because of no software for my work written in Linux, running on another machine here-- someone had what I consider the really excellent idea of incorporating a graphic equalizer on the machine output under the Realtek audio package..one eq to control all sounds from that machine--anything like that available for SUSe??

OpenSUSE Network :: Trying To Find Out Skype Alternative

Jun 6, 2011

Last two days I am trying to find alternative to skype. So I decided to find solution for my family, friends to chat, call (audio, video) using opensource product on linux. I have tried the following: (using same clients and gtalk accounts on both test machines)

1. Kopete 1.0.80
Firstly, I like it because it is native in opensuse KDE system.
Secondly, it has optional jungle support for gtalk, which is ok for me.
The only problem, I cannot turn on jingle support, because there should be talk.google.com server , but the right server is gmail.com. Only with gmail.com server I can connect to my gtalk. I was managed to do it right, but my friends do not have jingle settings (libjingle installed). What should we do? Will we be able to talk when we activate it?

2. Pidgin 2.7.10 (libpurple 2.7.10)
Video calling, audio calling doesn't work at all. We using same version of pidgin on two computers, there is mention that it is calling but no progress after, nothing. Even camera turns on (no image though) but after doesn't turn off (camera light).

3. PSI 0.14 patched
Psimedia installed, doesn't call at all. Says that the client reject me or busy.

4. Empathy 2.32.2
No options for video and audio hardware, nothing to change at all). Call from menu doesn't work, nothing happens after I press "call". Call from chat window impossible because buttons are grey, are not active. Now error "could not sync the state of the new nicesrc with its parent"

5. Gajim
Even after writing down stun server stun.ekiga.net call buttons for video and audio call were inactive, unable to make call.

6. Ekiga
Using pctel.ru. Works ok, sometimes problems with intiating video, but still something. I am not very happy because it is not XMPP.

7. Twinkle works like a charm. The only one client using which I haven't had any problems at all. The only thing to tailor is audio codec (also encryption if you like).

I hope to make a call one day and to be sure that I haven't used any closed program for it!

OpenSUSE :: Download / Compile Alternative Mod_jk To One Included

Apr 2, 2010

I am having some troubles installing tomcat on a fresh copy of 11.2. I began by following the instructions that I found here: Tomcat HOWTO - openSUSE and proceeded to install the requisite packages through YaST, except I chose to install tomcat6 and java 1.6, presuming that they would work equally well to the older versions indicated in the guide. My stumbling block came when the guide went on to tell me to download and compile an alternative mod_jk to the one included (even though I hadn't come across one, so I didn't have to uninstall one like the guide suggested.) The link provided in the guide was dead so I found an alternative link through google, and set up the directory structure as suggested. The next step tells me that I must run this command:

[code]...

I have tried to create an apxs2 directory in sbin, which isn't allowed. I have also tried running the command without the apxs2 on the end, also to no avail.

OpenSUSE :: Skype Alternative - Client With Good Video And Voice Quality

Jun 16, 2010

I am looking for a good alternative to Skype. I would like to have video and voice calls with a family member who uses MS XP but would like to avoid Skype if possible. Does anyone know of a good client with good video and voice quality that will work on both platforms. I'd like it to use open standards so at least we can use different OS specific clients if one is not available for both platforms. Googling hasn't yielded much and some of the results refer to really old (~2006) articles or apps. I hope I'm not doomed to using Skype. I've resisted so long with using SIP clients for voice but am stumped now that I want to include video.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Alternative For NVIDIA Graphic Card Installation Correct?

Jan 7, 2011

I am new to Suse Linux. So please excuse me for this "funny" query. have read the threads: Configuring graphics cards in openSUSE 11.3

From here I went to this page: SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE Its mentioned on this page that: Upon installing openSUSE, the X system's automatic configuration may have failed to properly configure the graphics correctly. Typically this results in either a black screen upon reboot, or the wrong resolution being displayed on the monitor.

I have none of these problems. But after searching for inability of desktop effects to become activated, I found that nVIDIA graphic card drivers are must for these effects. After clicking "My computer" icon on desktop, I found Display Info as following:

Vendor: nVidia Corporation
Model: G98 [GeForce 8400 GS]
2D driver: nouveau
3D driver: nouveau Gallium (7.8.2)

Can anyone tell me 'Is nouveau an alternative for nVIDIA'? Is this the reason for no wrong resolution or black screen upon boot. That means my computer graphics are working correctly. Then why does Desktop Effects are not getting enabled.

After searching for Kaffeine media player extra codecs to play media files, I incidentally found the following options: I opened Yast Control Center @ linux-o26a Software> Add on Products > installed Add-On Products > Community Repositories > clicking Next, this opened a window with "List of Online repositories" where there is an option of "NVIDIA Repository". If I install it, will it enable the "Desktop effects"

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade From F13 To F15 - Recommended?

I am running a very stable F13 on my little box and I was thinking to upgrade from F13 directly to F15 using the preupgrade-cli tool. Is this recommended, or should I go to F14 first? I would like to skip that step:

The F13 is my home server with a lot of services:
- IMAP (dovecot)
- Postfix
- Postgresql
- apache (tons of php)
- vmware workstation 7.1.4
- dhcpd
- named
- samba
- squid

I am worried that the upgrade will break something. I spent a lot of time setting these things up.

Software :: Recommended CMS For A Web Configuration Tool ?

May 18, 2011

I have inherited a web configuration tool based on mojoportal (which uses C#). As the web server hosting this site is on a Linux machine (currently Ubuntu + mono), I would like to recreate it in a more Linux-natural environment.

The web application I inherited needs to allow creation of configuration profiles for other Linuxes(including setting their IP tables, QoS and many other network protocols). These profiles are downloaded by the Linux clients and a local parser does the configuration accordingly.

The main properties I need are:
* Receive and display a lot of structured data to the user (i.e. iptables chains or QoS hierarchies) and of course process it
* Manage several users with different permissions
* Use MySQL as the database
* Allow FTP access to receive configuration files created
* Display monitoring data and graphs (a low-level NMS)

I do not need forums, blogs or any other user input apart from entering data in the forms (possibly a text editor, but that's about it)

I used to be very proficient in Python and Perl (so am sure it would be easy to regain these abilities) and am versed in SQL. I know HTTP and CGI but never worked with PHP.

Fedora Servers :: Recommended Postfix Configuration For SB?

Mar 27, 2009

I am building an email server in what I consider to be a 'small business'. I would say my Postfix mail server will house 300 mailboxes (Max). I have a decent server with enough RAM / disk space to run this email server however I don't know what the best way is to manage / configure the users mail boxes.

how to create a new user on the Linux server using 'adduser / useradd' and then setting their shell to /bin/nologin. This is because the mail user will never need to log into the shell of the mail server directly and can still populate email from their mailbox which is located in their /home/$user directory. Now many people I spoke with have advised me that this is a bad and cumbersome method of account administration.

I am running:

Postfix 2.5
Clamav v0.94.2
Amavisd-new 2.5.4
Dovecot 1.0.7
Spamassassin 3.2.5
