View 8 RepliesI am running ubuntu 9.10. Is it possible to remove the pre-released updates and revert to recommended updates?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 10.10 but I can only use Windows 7 now (I hate it). Here's why: when I go to the boot screen and I am given the choice of using Windows 7 or Ubuntu and I select Ubuntu, the screen goes black and says:
error: unknown command 'loadfont' error: file not found
Then I have to reset my laptop and use Windows 7. This happened when I was using Ubuntu like I usually did and I downloaded recommended updates from Ubuntu. I downloaded them and I was asked to reset my laptop for it to be effective. I did and when the boot screen came up it said what it says above. I can't even get to the login screen. I've been searching everywhere for an answer.
When I open Yast's software management in opensuse 11.4, there's like 400mb of changes it basically forces me to install. For instance, flash player, libre office stuff, gstreamer etc.
I remove these from the download list, but when I go install something like the nvidia driver I need, it still downloads and installs all that other stuff first, whether I remove it from the list or not. It still makes me agree to the flash player terms or it won't install anything.
How can I get all these recommended updates off of there and just install what I want to individually?
My kupdate-applet tells me it has a recommended update: KDE 4.3.5 from the official opensuse update repo. Problem is I already have a more recent version of KDE 4.3.5 installed from the official opensuse KDE repo. In yast I pressed the "switch system packages" button for the KDE repo. How can I make the update applet ignore this "recommended" update? Note that the updateApplet itself is installed from the opensuse update repo. If I don't do this, then the older update applet from the KDE repo always has a recommended update for... Kupdate-applet.

After click on install updates and entering password, a message says "Some of the packages could not be retrieved from the server(s). Do you want to continue, ignoring these packages? Yes/No.
If I answer No, this message appears:
W: Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/po....10.1_i386.deb
404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.31 80]
If Yes, it tries to download but immediately:
W: Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/po....10.1_i386.deb

It has always installed the updates with no problems, until these 3 updates remain in pending installation status.

View 9 Replies View RelatedIs there an easy way/place to get more info on the updates that the Ubuntu (9.04) Update Manager presents to you? I know you can highlight one and look below at the "Changes" and "Description". But how can you find a real explanation of what the update is? To give one exampe: There's a 5.0MB update called: openoffice.org-writer It appears to be a new version of the Writer program?? or is it just security updates?? Should I install it if I'm happy with the current Writer version? bottom line: where can I get plain talk about what these updates are?

When I try to install my updates with Update Manager I get this error message: p { margin-bottom: 0.08in; } W: Failed to fetch [URL]..Could not connect to 172.16.30.51:3128 (172.16.30.51). - connect (110: Connection timed out) W: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...tu1.3_i386.deb Unable to connect to 172.16.30.51:3128: (and it goes on like this for a while) Also, when I go to install software, I get this message: Requires installation of untrusted packages. and if I click OK, nothing happens. The software won't install. I have a feeling this is because I can't update my system.

I currently have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 (The beta) running on my Laptop. I want to know if it's possible to get 11.04 (Full) through the update manager? If so, how? Secondly, if I wanted to just go back to 10.10, could i install it over the current 11.04? I don't want to copy files over or anything like that, just a fresh start.

Installed Macbuntu on my new installation of Ubuntu 10.10. At onset was able to run update Manager with no problem. However after a couple of days and since I did the theme to make my ubuntu look like a Mac...it doesn't want to install any updates it receives. It says another program is running but I'm not running anything other than the Update Manager. Any suggestions as to how to fix this or should I drop the theme and go back to the regular window theme that came with the version of Ubuntu 10.10 I downloaded from the main site.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI updated one of my x64 notebooks that has been offline for about a week. There were several updates needed. Towards the end of the update I got a message something about could not complete update because one of the updates was waiting for another process/update to complete.
I verified that it was still trying to update by opening terminal window. After I closed the info box which had a white minus sign it it and reran to check for updates, it said everything was up to date.
How can I be sure that the update in question was applied? Unfortunately don't remember which one. Is there a checksum run at the end of the updates to unsure the update is properly applied? All seems to be working fine.
I regularly check for updates via Update Manager. I have, as of today started getting errors, some updates did not upload.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have the package "xvidcap" (Screen recorder) installed in Ubuntu, the problem I have is the version I have installed is an older version and there is a newer version avaliable, but I don't want to install the newer version as this breaks some functionality regarding screen capturing e.g. audio capturing. But each time I run Update Manager the package appears in the list to be upgraded.
Is there anyway to flag the package as do not upgrade or something to make it not appear in Update Manager or at least have it greyed out so the checkbox isn't automatically checked each time update manager is ran?
I started using ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my Dell Studio 15 laptop. Installing ubuntu has never been this easy! I used CD which used WUBIInstaller to install Ubuntu. Then I restarted my machine and selected Ubuntu from 'OS selection screen'.
I connected to my wireless broadband in few minutes and found a pop-up of 'update manager' showing 305 new updates to be download and to be installed. I installed all updates worth 370 MB and in middle got an pop-up of GRUB telling me to configure GRUB on some path. I just selected that path and clicked on FORWARD button. Then installation of updates got over and it asked me to restart machine. I restarted machine but on OS selection screen, when i selected Ubuntu it didn't boot Ubuntu but instead machine restarted again. I'm not able to boot into Ubuntu.
I started having connection issues after last upgrade.. how can i check and rollback some updates? 10.10 netbook
ps. there's no History in Ubuntu Software Center
I already checked the preferences of UM but the filtering is somewhat awkward -- i.e. you have choice to EITHER install silently security updates OR be notified about all updates. One does not exclude the other, but for UM apparently it does.
But I have similar yet different need -- be notified about ONLY security updates (so when I click to show the updates, I will see only them). The rest of the updates should be ignored -- unless the update is required by the other, security update package.
