OpenSUSE :: Installing Development Files Via YaST
Jun 12, 2011
I'm trying to install the development files via yast i.e. libkde4-devel and I keep libkde4-devel 4.2.80 requires libkde4 4.6.80. Ok I understand this I have libkde4 4.6.2 but no package for libkde4-devel 4.6.2. If I try to install libkde4 4.6.80 the conflicts just keep growing. What do you have to do to get libkde4-devel install on suse 11.4 (x64).

I would like to install development tools / libs, such as gcc. But I haven't selected them during the opensuse 11.2 x64 installation, and when I use the yast2/software management to install programming packages, there are many items, and I don't know which should/should not be installed. Even when I select all to install, it seems many conflicts reported. So is there any easy way to install the development packages properly, without reinstalling the os?

Why does YaST close after one installs a package? Is there a way to disable this annoying feature?
System Specifications:
openSUSE 11.3 64-bit(installed from a Live CD)
KDE 4.5(error also occurred in KDE 4.4.4)

i finally managed to achieve minimal 11.2 system (following tutorial on this forum) but now whenever i try to install additional packages using yast, it automatically selects a whole bunch of unnecessary software. For example, installation of "radeonhd" tries to pull Mozilla Sunbird from repositories.
That's unacceptable behavior and no wonder system gets bloated over time. Is there a way to set yast to pull only crucial dependencies with selected packages (like apt-get's recommended and suggested packages)?

i tried to install wine in SLED11 but i got this error : configure: error: X development files not found. Wine will be built without X support, which probably isn't what you want. You will need to install development packages of Xlib/Xfree86 at the very least. Use the --without-x option if you really want this.

I use openSUSE 11.1 since quite a bit and I frequently use YAST (not as root of course). However, since the problems I have to deal with while trying to install WiFi internet access I meet the following problem. I call YAST, get the small authentication screen, I give the right password, which seems to be recognized as such, but I never see YAST appearing. So I can't manage neither my hardware, nor my software.

When i create a backup with yast using the option to manually create it, i select the file name /mnt/Backup/system-full-$(date +%F).tar which results later on in two files, the xml file and the tar file with different names:
for example
/mnt/Backup/system-full-2011-03-08.tar, /mnt/Backup/system-full-$(date +%F).xml
this is not acceptable. both files should have the same suffix. Is this the expected behavior or should i report a bug?

I'm having trouble installing visual python, I've downloaded the source package from [URL] as I couldn't find it on yast. On calling ./configure most tests are passed but I get an error which says I need gtkglextmm 1.2 checking in Yast I see this is already installed. Looking in the install.txt it talks about this error and suggests renaming some files, I'm not keen to do this for fear of breaking something else but as it turns out they are already named what they need to be anyway.? Now I'm truly stumped.

I installed Fedora 10 on an 8 GB USB-stick using the creator-software for windows. Sadly I am not so familiar with linux but as I am now trying Fedora on a friend's advice I really start to like it
Unfortunatels there ist a problem: I wanted to compile a driver for my wlan-card but got the known error "make: command not found". So I searched this forum and found in this thread that I need to install the development tools. But when I try to do so by typing yum groupinstall "Development Tools" it first starts but then cancels with an error message claiming missing dependencies to a perl package:
Quote:
Fehler: Fehlende Abhngigkeit: perl = 4:5.10.0-49.fc10 wird bentigt von Paket 1erl-Pod-Escapes-1.04-49.fc10.i386 (installed)
Due to my ignorance I tried yum install perl but this also fails with the same error message I am sure it is just a bite for you but I don't hava a clue right now By the way I already can call the command make install now for the wlan-card driver. It also starts but fails and says:

In openSUSE 11.3 when I selected the Python Development pattern for install, it included everything needed for Python development. I installed openSUSE 11.4 yesterday from the full DVD ISO and selected the Python Development pattern, but all it installed is the patterns-openSUSE-devel_python meta package, which apparently doesn't include any other software. It didn't even install the python interpreter.
Of course I can easily install what I need manually, but the pattern is a handy one for quick installs that need Python. Is this pattern broken under 11.4 or am I missing something? I couldn't find anything about this behavior in the release notes, known 11.4 bug list on the forums, Google, etc.

Looking for a recommendation on database development software. I tried Openoffice Database. The program crashes frequently when establishing relationships. If the data types of the relationship disagree, the program crashes. Also, the screen for establishing relationships is too small. I will probably need about 40 tables, and the Openoffice relationship map can realistically handle only about 12.
Apparently Access is up to the task of the development. Ultimately, I want to convert the developed database into a LAMP Web application. Also, I'm thinking of jobbing out much of the development. Is their an equivalent Linux-based solution, or should I hold my nose and go ahead with Access and Windows?

It is bad enough that the kernel gods have basically required that the whole kernel source tree be installed and configured to compile even a simple module but they have made it so a module compiled on one kernel will not work on any other.
To make the situation worse much of the configuration needed to successfully compile a module has been left out of open suse11.3. If you want to replicate the problems may I suggest you attempt to compile the usb-skeleton.c driver example code that is included with each kernel. If it is the intent of the linux community to limit driver development to the professionals then congratulations.

On Windows and Mac it's as simple as downloading some WAMP and XAMP stack and clicking "install".
On OpenSUSE I'm trying to do it myself. I went into YaST and installed the "Web and LAMP Server" pattern.
Then I edited the default-server.conf file to point towards my website by changing the DocumentRoot and <Directory "blah blah"> lines.
Then I tried to start apache, but got the following error:
Code:
# apache2ctl restart
httpd2: Syntax error on line 188 of /etc/apache2/httpd.conf: Could not open configuration file /etc/apache2/sysconfig.d/include.conf: No such file or directory
So I just went into httpd.conf and commented out that line.

I hunted down kdevelop4 through yast. I found it finally by entering "Integrated Development Environment" in the search text box, clicking "Description" only, and clicking Search. I'm backtracking now to figure out how to find it and other development tools/ide's quicker in the future.I clicked the Technical Data tab for kdevelop4 and in the details, "Package Group" shows "Development/Tools/IDE".In Yast, I then clicked on the "Package Groups" tab and searched on the left-hand side for "Development". But it's now there.
In OpenSuSE 10.3, when I viewed the Package Groups tree structure, there was a node, "Development" which contained kdevelop3. But I can't seem to find the "Development" Package Group in OpenSuSE 11.2.

Attempting to install FileZilla under YasT:
Download failed: File '/repodata/repomd.xml' not found on medium url.

In my YaST Network Settings (11.3), I see an entry labelled "Unknown Network Device" how to remove the confusion? The Overview tab also correctly lists my three known network devices (listed below), as does the Hardware Information utility. This is the output of lspci, and as far as I can tell, is accurate and complete. So what has YaST seen that it can't identify?

I just dual booted Open SUSE on my computer, and am pretty happy with it. But, in order to use my wireless card for it, I need to install a driver. The wireless card is a Realtek 8191 SE. I've downloaded a driver, but I have no idea how to configure it. I've tried pasting the files into /lib/firmware, but it won't allow me to edit or paste any files into the folder.

What does the red text in Yast mean? I installed a printer driver (Gutenprint 5.2.4) from here: software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 11.2) and when I view the installed packages in Yast, it shows up in red text. Why? (btw, that newer Gutenprint has the driver for my new Epson Artisan printer as well as my Samsung laser printer).

Using OpenSuse 11.2 RC2. After playing around to install the nvidia driver, Yast lost its beautiful initial colours (light blue, as the rest of the kde desktop) and became a bit uglier (dark blue, more rudimentary, etc; I think the default "unbranded KDE"'s colour).I have the KDE theme set either for the regular user and for root. I have also installed the packages yast2-theme-openSUSE and yast2-theme-openSUSE-Oxygen installed but, how shall I choose one of them? Some webs say that there is an option in Yast under "miscellaneous" to choose Yast's theme, but I do not have it.

I've installed OpenSUSE 11.2 and I'm pretty happy with over all system, the only issue that I had is with Yast, so far. It gives me alert for security patches but no alert for Software update. When I did "zypper up" as superuser I saw that there are updates available for more that 14 applications but yast didn't show me.
if there is any setting for it or should I file it as a bug.
