Mar 16, 2010It's been a while since ive run any Linux OS, but after reading about Osuse, i decided to partition my drive and check it out. Just downloaded and installed OpenSUSE. I have access to internet via my hard wired lan port, but wireless has me confused. Dell D600.I have allowed all updates to install, and added my wireless connection using KDE Control module. When i hit the scan button the scan box appears but nothing is picked up. My router is linksys, and its wide open (no encryption, nor hidden).

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Ndiswrapper Error Free But No Wlan0
Mar 25, 2010I have to use ndiswrapper to get my wireless card to work (Cheap D-link usb wireless). I have never had a problem in ubuntu releases with getting it up and going, but in Fedora and now Opensuse I am struggling. I have everything setup with no errors. Ndiswrapper lists my drivers as installed and my hardware present. lsusb also has it listed. but when I modprobe ndiswrapper, I am getting no errors, but I am also not getting wlan0 to show when using iwconfig. I also noticed when modprobed the wireless card's light isn't coming on like ubuntu.

Jun 26, 2011I have a laptop Compaq cq60 and once I installed opensuse 11.1 64 with a Atheros AR5001 wifi card (pci). It worked and connected to several wap at home and abroad with no problem. I upgrade the laptop with a clean install to OpenSuSE 11.4 (also x86_64).Now when I try to bring the interface up a strange message appears. Moreover! I had the same problem with a Netgear usb wifi dongle!A Realtek completely different chipset. Before the problems a small explanation of the setup.
The module for the Atheros is loaded with no problems.I already tested rmmod ath5k and rmmod ath and then modprobe ath5k ... no problems whatsoever.The same happens for the NetGear usb wifi dongle! It is immediately recognized as soon as the module is inserted and the module loaded.I also checked this with lsudev and lshal ... I could not see any problems there ... I do not use NetworkManager as my experience tells me it is better to first configure on cli and then move to the graphical interface when things are working conveniently.
So both internal and usb wifi cards are detected and the respective modules loaded with no problems.They are both configured in yast to be activated manually and they both have the wep key and essid. I connect to a Asuswl500g WAP with wep encryption just to start.
When I try to bring up any of those wifi interfaces I get this error :

this shuts down the first card but i have to do this manually after every restart. one thing: don't come with "deactivate in bios" - i knoe this but playing around in bios everytime i switch between windows and linux is no option. So how can i prohibit permanently that knetworkmanager uses the first one (wlan0)? putting in some place of suseconfigs a rmmod <driver>? where? /etc/sysconfig ??

Aug 11, 2011I've just a had laptop meltdown which resulted in the acquisition of a replacement (HP635) sporting a realtek wireless NIC. Found the drivers and installed them and all is well. HOWEVER, the card is not activated on wake from sleep mode. This is kind of astounding to me. Every crappy windows version that I've used can handle this situation. Many searches, however have failed to yield any help. After every resume from sleep mode I have to run ifup to start wlan0. Surely this is not the only way it can be? I have to assume that I'm not getting something simple, and someone here can point out my failing. or if you can just sympathize. running 11.4 here using the realtek 8192 driver set to start at boot time. Though none of the other settings have had any effect on this problem.

Apr 29, 2010This is probably the 1 millionth post about WIFI issues. I have tried many sources on the internet but cant get my wireless to work. I have been using another version of linux for long time. But recent edition of that particular linux does not support my wifi any more. Just recently i have tried SuSE and almost fell in love with it. The only problem, WIFI.
I got a Linksys WUSB54GC USB wifi stick which uses RT2800USB native driver. I installed SuSE from the scratch and it found the wifi stick installed the drivers. My only problem is it does not scan for wireless networks. I haev two wifi networks around here. I can connect to them with windows computer with the same wifi stick.
I have tried iwconfig iwlist ifup but i am stuck exactly what to do.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless - Lost It - 'wmaster0 No Wireless Extensions', But Then Refers To Wlan0 As The Wireless Connection
Mar 28, 2010A friend who switched ISP's gave me his old Linksys WRT54-G wireless router. I went through the installation procedure and had a wireless connection up and running - smiley face. I had security set up for WPA, and decided to upgrade it to WPA2. Another smiley face. When I went to connect (had already done so successfully), I noticed it referred to my wireless as Linksys - I was expecting to see the SSID. So I started playing around in Network Manager and now I have things all effed up.
Don't know exactly what I did, but now I have no wireless. So I ran a few commands (lshw -C network, iwconfig, ifconfig, and iwlist scan), and looking at the results I see what appear to be inconsistencies in the output. I've posted them below, and make the following observations:
1. Under the lshw it refers to my wireless connection logical name as wmaster0, and has the correct MAC address, etc.
2. Under the iwconfig it says, 'wmaster0 no wireless extensions', but then refers to wlan0 as the wireless connection (although it does not seem to be running).
3. Under ifconfig I see both a wlan0 and a wlan0:avahi. The wlan0 has no IP, the wlan0:avahi does, but it is incorrect.

Did an install from binary, and everything went ok and virtual box launches, but once I have created the virtual disk and the want to run it, I get an error, and the log says that it has to do with the ext4 filesystem and has a known kernel bug. Nov 12, 2010Although Win7 is not bad either, I'm really happy using new Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat on my notebook. Since I've been using Linux (SimplyMepis, then Arch) on my desktop, I'm really happy that I found a Linux distro which suits me the best. BTW, I have a Toshiba T130-10g which I love for its long battery life. However, I would like to solve some issues/dilemmas/questions (and I searched for s the solutions of some of them on Google so please don't tell me to use it...)
1) How do I turn off Wifi completely in a comfortable way? I tried sudo iwconfig wlan0 txpower off but it threw: Error for wireless request "Set Tx Power" (8B26): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported. I even edited something in interfaces configuration file, but it did nothing. Oh, I forgot, my notebook doesn't have a hardware switch to turn off wifi.
2) Setting brightness doesnt work for my laptop. I can set it by udo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=25 but I'm looking for a more comfortable solution. BTW, editing one GRUB configuration file didn't help and ended in booting into command line (it was something with adding backlight=vendor or something like that...)
3) My touchpad is sometimes too sensitive and clicks somewhere sometimes when I don't want to it. How to make clicks less sensitive? I tried to play with some mouse settings but it didn't help much but perhaps I'm setting a bad parameter.
4) I remember that back in KDE 3.5 times a network manager icon had a setting to switch on net statistics so I could very easily see how much I downloaded every day. But, since KDE 3.5 is not supported anymore, I stopped using it in refusal to update to KDE 4.XX and switched to GNOME. Since for some months I'll have a limited download connection, is there something esay in GNOME to watch my net statistics that wouldn't be deleted after reboot/shutdown?...

Feb 21, 2010Formated new drive with ext3 on external drive on Suse 11.1 When upgraded to 11.2, drive was not connected... Could not get mounted after that... Set up another boot drive, could not get to mount. Found post with following:

Error as follows: mount: unknown filesystem type 'crypto_LUKS' Have also got to another point where superblock was incorrect. I can use terminal, but am not a linux guru... Have looked at other posts under luks, but can not find a solution.
OpenSUSE Install :: Grub Error 18 - Unknown File System - Running From External Hard Drive
Jan 11, 2011It started when I wanted to dual boot Windows 7 and Opensuse off of my netbook (No DVD/CD drive) I tried install suse from an external hard drive and I botched it. I ended up erasing EVERYTHING off of my internal netbook hard drive. Windows and all.
Well, I had a couple of other computers so I studied up and eventually successfully installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on my external hard drive (11.3 being the one that I accidentally erased everything with, so kinda scared of it) and now I want to install openSUSE 11.2 on my internal netbook hard drive.
I can not use disks
I can not use a flash drive (For some reason, even if I make it bootable, it will not load up, this could be because it's actually a 8GB microSD card that is placed in a USB card reader.)
I can not use an external hard drive because that's what I'm running suse off of.
I've tried reading up on how to install suse on another drive off of the hard drive and I've gotten as far as whenever I boot up the netbook with the suse external hard drive connected it will ask to boot into OpenSUSE, the Fail Safe, or to install OpenSuse. When I select to install it it gives me the Error 18 Unknown File system.
I've tried formatting the internal hard drive twice. One as NTFS and again as EXT4. Neither seems to effect it other than when it's ext4 I can open it and it contains a Lost and Found folder.
When I interrupt the boot sequence by pressing c and going to the terminal and I use the root (hd +TAB command it tells me I have a hd0 and a hd1. The hd1 only has 1 partition which is ext4, which I'm assuming hd1 is the internal hard drive (I'm not sure how to check) and the hd0 is the external hard drive, which has three partitions. One with an unknown file system and two with ext4. When I try to enter the set up from the terminal it gives me the same error for any thing I put it (e.g. root (hd0,0) gives the same error as root (hd0,1), or root (hd0,2) and root (hd1,0)
Something like it cannot locate these two files I'm assuming it needs to boot. If anyone finds this relevant I'll retry it and post the files its missing.
I've been searching for awhile and can't find any threads that can solve my problem. From other threads, however, I have noticed that I should probably include my menu.lst, listed below

Fedora Networking :: Bring Up Wi-fi PCI Card (ifup Wlan0 Or Ifconfig Wlan0 Up) Whole PC Just Hangs Until Power It Off
May 20, 2009When I try to bring up my wi-fi PCI card (ifup wlan0 or ifconfig wlan0 up) my whole PC just hangs until I power it off.
I believe I have the right drivers, but cannot see what I am doing wrong.
I'd really prefer not to go down the ndiswrapper route.

the PC just hangs for ever. No mouse movement, ctrl-alt-del, nothing.
I have downloaded a Linux driver from Realtek but it will not compile. I have the latest kernel-devel, headers, and gcc. I can post compiler errors if anybody would like. They're all apparently to do with missing parameters.

Feb 25, 2011Earlier on my wireless is attached as eth1 and it works on to load conky except the Network section is blank. After that I had renamed eth1 to wlan0 and checked at ifconfig it is working fine.Now the conky won't load and I think something to do with my wlan0.

Aug 10, 2010My Slackware64 13.1 system is running off a notebook that does not leave the desk often so I stay connected via a ethernet cable. Recently I set up the wireless configuration for my home network and while I would like to have it so that it automatically goes to the wireless interface when the wired is down, I do not think that is possible without wicd or some other network manager. Anyway, whenever I start up Slackware both the wired and wireless interfaces activate and acquire their own IP addresses. What I would like is for the wireless configuration to remain dormant so that all I would have to do is issue "ifconfig wlan0 up" to turn on the wireless interface/connection. Is this possible? As it stands I have to manually issue the "ifconfig wlan0 down" to turn it off once the system boots up and I log in.
