OpenSUSE :: Usability Testing Of K3B And Openoffice?

Apr 25, 2010

I am doing a usability test on OpenSUSE 11.2 for a novice user. I am trying to establish if usability has an effect on why some students do not use GNU/Linux for general desktop computing. How easy and how many steps does a novice need to do the following tasks?

Note: Novice is someone who has no experience in working with OpenSUSE?

Task1: This task involves making two slides of a course presentation using OpenOffice Impress.Org
Task2: Involves changing the screen resolution and desktop background.
Task3: This task involves organizing files in folders
Task4: Involves copying music from an audio CD in to mp3 format using K3B

from this multirow taskbar, extensible quicklaunch, clock day date are only important. And i want to doubleclick upper left corner of a window as alternative close. A better variant is to use the third wheel button on a mouse - to close any window just by pressing wheel inside a window (similar to Firefox close a tab, or in qip close a tab..)

Ubuntu :: Usability With Non-maximised Windows?

Apr 29, 2011

If I want to work on two or more non-maximised windows, how do I simply access their menus without having to select a window into focus and then go to the top main menu? I'm fairly impressed with Unity, but that really struck me as a major usability blunder. I can accept that the window has to brought into focus, because that's what you'd do anyway, but then having to move the mouse to the top of the screen to get at the menu options seems really off.

Is there a way of doing this that's as elegant as was the case previously?

Ubuntu :: Upgrade To 11.04 And Usability Craziness?

May 31, 2011

I was running 10.10, and it was fine - except for some reason the mouse just stops working - nothing is clickable at all. Apparently this might be the official NVidia drivers, but I've not found a solution to that yet, but I do know that plenty of other people experience this. So today, I thought I'd check for updates to see if something would fix it.

1. I open the update manager, and see 11.04 is available, and several security fixes. I opt for the security fixes first, but they fail, saying 'check your internet connection'. My internet connection is perfectly fine, so this is a pretty bad error message to be showing people.

2. I then try the upgrade to 11.04 button instead, and it gets a small way in before saying it was 'unable to get exclusive lock' due to me having an update manager open - what, such as the one I used to launch this upgrade? Another bad error message.

3. I close everything, try again. Now it complains that not all upgrades can be installed due to a "previous upgrade that didn't complete". As a programmer I have to wonder why, if they're sensible enough to know how to use an exclusive lock to ensure a safe upgrade transaction, why they aren't sensible enough to treat the upgrade as a transaction which they could have rolled back when they failed to acquire that lock? Luckily this doesn't seem to be a serious problem but again it's a bad error message to display and one that is completely unnecessary.

4. I start upgrading. Eventually 'Defconf' pops up and asks me what I want to do about 'modified configuration file grub'? THIS IS NOT A SUITABLE QUESTION TO ASK A TYPICAL USER! My options are "Show differences, show side by side, show a 3 way comparison, do a 3 way merge (experimental), start a new shell to examine the situation, install the package maintainer's version, or keep the local version currently installed." Oh, while I'm doing this, the input periodically hangs every 10 seconds so I can't type. And I do have to type, because my mouse isn't working. Luckily, unlike 99% of computer users, I'm a programmer so I am not scared of comparing files, but I'm pretty horrified to see it pop up what looks like a text-based unified diff - how on earth is a normal human meant to act on that? And it did all this because it claimed I had changed something locally, but it became quite apparent on looking at the diff that I had done no such thing, and that some system program had done whatever it had done. So I was being asked about changes to a core piece of system functionality for no good reason.

5. I let it upgrade the file and it seemed to work when I rebooted. Now imagine my dismay when I notice that my desktop has been changed into a Mac. All my menus have disappeared and I have no idea how to get them back. I can still edit and reorder my menus in the System Settings but I'll be damned if I can work out how to get them on the screen again. Plus all my apps are uncomfortable to use now because the menus no longer appear unless I press the Alt key first. I'm not going to claim that the Mac approach is worse than what we had before but this is a MASSIVE usability change to spring on someone without any real warning or any guidance to simple things like "where did my menus and everything on them go?" I am aware most of this won't be news to most of you, but I'm sure that if you look at it from a pure usability perspective you can appreciate how awful an experience this would be for most people who now have to re-learn their system.

Ubuntu :: Install On An Old PC To Increase Its Speed And Usability

I recently decided to install ubuntu on an old PC to increase its speed and usability. Prior to this I had windows XP running on it. I installed the newest version of ubuntu, which makes the whole thing running unbearable slow. Under windows xp it was running ok, my question therefore is: which version would you guys recommend that needs less ressources, but still has comparable functionality to the new version?

The drive shows up in the "Places" menu, and if I select & open it, the drive and all the scripts & text files in it work. But, if I go to run the scripts without opening the dive in the places menu first, it just gives an error.

1. What is being done when I select the drive in the places menu?

2. Can this be set up automatically, so I don't have to open the drive every time after I start up?

Ubuntu :: Use The Nepomuk / Strigi File Indexing Service - Usability?

Aug 5, 2010

how one can use the nepomuk/strigi file indexing service. I started up dolphin, and typed the search string in the upper right corner, and clicked Search. The search result is a long list of files. The one I need is a PDF file. When I select this file, on the right hand side there is the following info: 'Is part of: 15.2 GiB Removable Media' which is clearly wrong, since this file resides in my home directory, which is on a 200 GiB partition. If I double-click this file to open in okular, I get an error message:

Code: Could not open nepomuksearch:/nepomuk_3A_2Fres_...... Reason: Please insert the removable medium "15.2 GiB Removable Media" to access this file I guess this is some old result from nepomuk's cache (in the meantime I have had to repartition my hard disk, and restore my home directory from a backup copy on an external hard drive - but this has been many months ago, so I would expect that nepomuk have had the time to recognize this)

OpenSUSE :: Vmware Migration And The Testing?

Jun 2, 2011

I'm in the process of testing upgrade -yes, upgrade, no fresh reinstall of my old trusty 11.2 to the unknown 11.4. One of the applications I need is VMware. I'm using vmware server, and I'm thinking of migrating to the player version, because the server is
not supported, it seems.I have installed a small test partition with 11.4, and in it I have installed VMPlayer. It looks nice (I had to install a lot of development packages, gcc, kernel-source, etc - nothing new here). Sound in the guest (I'm testing my virtual Windows Me) works; it wasn't working in the server. Nice surprise.

One missing feature is snapshots. The trick is to simply replicate all the files of the virtual machine to a backup. It is huge space wasted, 9 GB for a small machine, but it is doable. One thing I do not know how to do: VMplayer gives a notice that the virtual machine is version "Workstation 5.xx virtual machine", and that this version'x CMOS is not compatible and will use a default cmos instead. But I have not seen anywhere how to choose or change or upgrade the virtual machine type.

OpenSUSE :: Testing Webcam In Skype Freezes It Up / Resolve It?

is no video option. Sound isn't going either way during the calls. In
Skype's options menu, there is a place to test the video. When I click on

The webcam is a Logitech that works fine in Cheese, and I've used it with

OpenSUSE Hardware :: ATI X1200 Driver Testing Errors

Aug 4, 2010

I have installed openSuse 11.3 KDE, Due to my laptop being a bit old I am having difficulty nailing down the best graphics driver to work with. My Graphics card is an ATI Radon X1200. By default openSuse uses the Radeon driver for 2D, which is sadly not working quite as well as it should with my old graphics card. My basic problem is not that I can't get 3D (It uses swrast (No 3D Acceleration (7.8.2)), although that would be nice, it is that when I scroll on any page there is lag, and it looks jerky. I have therefore tested with fbdev, vesa, mach64, ati and radeonhd drivers respectively, and right out the gate the fbdev driver gave the best performance with no lag or jerking - surprising for the weakest driver. That said, I was unable to test with radeonhd or vesa due to them having errors. The radeonhd one gave the following:

(EE) FATAL: RadeonHD presently does not work with kernel modesetting (KMS). disable KMS in your kernel. what are the side-affects of disabling KMS, and is it something that I should consider doing, or should I just be happy with using the fbdev driver. As for the vesa driver, I can't remember the error that it gave, so I will have to check and post it up in a bit.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 - Boot Slowed By HDD Speed Testing

Aug 2, 2010

Each time I boot my opensuse 11.2 system one of the very first things that happens is that the system seems to test how fast it can handle my HDD, an older EIDE drive with the wide ribbon cable. This takes about a minute, one test each 15 secs or so until it gets down to about 33 speed and then the boot proceeds as normal.

I guess this is just the normal testing by the more advanced sata procedures in the kernel (2.6.34). If I were only booting this machine once every 6 months it would not be an issue, but I do so at least once a day. Is there any way to indicate to the system the speed of the connection so that it does not have to do the test, or close the gap a bit so that it finds the answer more quickly?

My system:
openSUSE 11.2
Linux 2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop x86_64
KDE: 4.4.4 "release 3"

My problem: I just did a "zypper dup" to upgrade to KDE 4.4.4 from 4.3.5. All seem to have went well aside from that openoffice won't start anymore. I do get the initial splash and it goes away but then nothing else happens. I have tried both by clicking an .odt document and by starting it from Kickstart menu, same negative result. All other programs seem to be running fine as before. The current version of OO is now 3.2.1.6-1.1-x86_64

What I've tried: I tried to swith all packages to OpenOffice community repository, restarted pc but the result is still the same. I also did an unconditional update, restarted but the result is still the same.

OpenSUSE :: 11.2 And KDE W/ OpenOffice Writer And Klipper?

Nov 28, 2009

Open two different instances of OpenOffice Writer (two separate entries on the task bar). In one of them type the word test and highlight it and leave it that way. Now using the mouse pointer try switching between these two different OpenOffice Writers on the task bar. There shouldn't be much of a switching delay if any, going either way.

Now go to the OpenOffice Writer with "test" highlighted. Hit the <ctrl>C (copy) key about five times rapidly, then immediately click the mouse on the other OpenOffice Writer on the task bar. I am seeing up to a 5 second dead time delay between switching. There is no "busy" indication from the mouse pointer. The mouse pointer moves, but any clicks will not take effect during the 5 second delay, then any mouse clicks quickly take effect in a cascade after the delay is over.

Sometimes Klipper looses the <ctrl>C (copy) "test" text (Klipper still displays it its history) and refuses to <ctrl>V (paste) "test" any longer. When Klipper reaches this state a single <ctrl>C (copy) of "test" will cause the up to 5 second delay when switching.

The delay is only noticeable if you immediately switch on the task bar. If I do the copies and simply wait at least 5 seconds before switching, there is no delay. So, the switching itself isn't the cause.

I have reproduced this on PCs in a 32 bit 11.2 install and a 64 bit 11.2 install. Both installs are KDE 4.3.3 release 3 repos. Either this long delay shouldn't be happening or the mouse should at least do its busy indication thing and not act like everything is normal when it isn't.

OpenSUSE :: 11.3 - Oxygen Icons In OpenOffice 3.2.1

Jul 31, 2010

I am using OpenOffice 3.2.1 and Opensuse 11.3 with KDE 4.4.4. When I use the KDE4 integration and the oxygen icon set, I'am getting a mixture of oxygen (KDE4) icons and crystal (KDE3) icons in the symbol panel (I hope this is the correct word in english). E.g. the icons for "bold", "italic" or underlined are crystal icons instead of oxygen. I had the same "problem" with Opensuee 11.2 and older OpenOffice versions.

Interestingly, when I start OpenOffice in my root account, OpenOffice shows all icons correctly as oxygen icons. When creating a new user account (a test account), OpenOffice use the icon mixture. Also transferring the ".oo3" folder of root to my user account didn't solve the "problem". Of course, this is not a real problem with OpenOffice, it's more a desing error (but I like to solve it ). Who else has a mixture of oxygen and crystal icons?

OpenSUSE :: OpenOffice.org 3.2 Crashes On 11.3 With GNOME?

Sep 8, 2010

When I've installed openSUSE 11.3, OpenOffice was asking me to install JRE, and I did it. However, next time i run it, it crashed without any error log. When I run it again, it sad a couple of time that JRE is defective, and asked me to reinstall it again. Eons passed, but my patience was rewarded. OpenOffice.org Impress was up. but just for a few seconds. Then it crashed again, and left no signs of life. I've repeated the same cycle few times... Then I decided to search for a solution, and read topics where similar problems were discussed. One solution was to expand my swap memory, and the another one was to install an older version of OO. I wasn't very eager to install an older version of OO, so I tried to expand swap memory by cutting memory from the other partitions. I found reference that swap memory should be twice bigger than RAM. Since i have 512 + 256 MB RAM, I've typed 1536 MB as a new value for swap memory. Error appeared that value of swap memory must be between 42MB and 684MB. I'm not sure about the second number, but it was between 600 and 700... I must get OpenOffice.org working as soon as possible, because it's very important for my work. I'm running 64bit openSUSE 11.3 on AMD Sempron 2800+ with 768MB RAM using OpenOffice 3.2.1.4-1.2 and java-1_6_0-sun
