OpenSUSE :: Vmware Migration And The Testing?
Jun 2, 2011
I'm in the process of testing upgrade -yes, upgrade, no fresh reinstall of my old trusty 11.2 to the unknown 11.4. One of the applications I need is VMware. I'm using vmware server, and I'm thinking of migrating to the player version, because the server is
not supported, it seems.I have installed a small test partition with 11.4, and in it I have installed VMPlayer. It looks nice (I had to install a lot of development packages, gcc, kernel-source, etc - nothing new here). Sound in the guest (I'm testing my virtual Windows Me) works; it wasn't working in the server. Nice surprise.
One missing feature is snapshots. The trick is to simply replicate all the files of the virtual machine to a backup. It is huge space wasted, 9 GB for a small machine, but it is doable. One thing I do not know how to do: VMplayer gives a notice that the virtual machine is version "Workstation 5.xx virtual machine", and that this version'x CMOS is not compatible and will use a default cmos instead. But I have not seen anywhere how to choose or change or upgrade the virtual machine type.

I've installed the latest testing version, which has 2.6.32 kernel perfect for me. I was very amazed when check system monitor and saw it runs with 90MB RAM, meanwhile my ubuntu desktop takes only 400, and the pocket version of ubuntu on vmware has 180MB RAM.
The questions is: Debian runs on vmware 7. Could the amount of RAM change when switching to a normal environment? Or I have to test and see what is happening..What problems could occur when using a testing version?

After updating to KDE4.7, and upon opening Contact I was asked if I wanted to migrate to Kmail2 now. I said no as I was told that the migration would take a long time. I thought it would ask me again for the migration the next time I would open Kmail. But no, I now have kmail with no past emails, no adress book no nothing. Is there a way to start the migration again.

Ethernet configuration:
- eth0 private net
- eth1 internet
eth1 is connected to a cable modem and uses dhcp. After migrating to suse-11.2 ip-forwarding (once the system is up and running) is sometimes deactivated and i have no clue why. /etc/syslog.conf has an entry net.ipv4.ip_forwarding = 1
i have modified the SuSE-scripts /sbin/SuSEfirewall /sbin/ifup-dhcp /etc/init.d/SuSEfirewall2_setup to make sure each time my firewall-rules are loaded ip-forwarding is explicitly enabled. This worked perfectly with suse-11.0. Now ip-forwarding is enabled after a system reboot or after one of the above scripts is called, but somewhere somehow ip-forwarding is always deactivated and i have no idea how this happens. This may happen after 5 minutes or after 5 hours. As a workaround i created a cronjob running every 5 minutes issuing a sysctl-command to enable ip-forwarding.

I run opensuse 11.3/KDE:Factory. Recently, kmail updated to using akonadi. The following problem came up. My local emails are now managed by a "local folders" component of akonadi. The folder structure is displayed correctly in Kmail. However, no emails are shown for some folders. Emails still live in the .kde4/share/app/kmail directory hierarchy and can be imported into a new folder after moving them somewhere else. However, even after a fresh import sometimes emails are no longer recognized.

I am doing a usability test on OpenSUSE 11.2 for a novice user. I am trying to establish if usability has an effect on why some students do not use GNU/Linux for general desktop computing. How easy and how many steps does a novice need to do the following tasks?
Note: Novice is someone who has no experience in working with OpenSUSE?
Task1: This task involves making two slides of a course presentation using OpenOffice Impress.Org
Task2: Involves changing the screen resolution and desktop background.
Task3: This task involves organizing files in folders
Task4: Involves copying music from an audio CD in to mp3 format using K3B

I can't use the webcam with skype. I followed the instructions on the SDB
Skype page of opensuse.org. I can make calls and recieve calls, but there
is no video option. Sound isn't going either way during the calls. In
Skype's options menu, there is a place to test the video. When I click on
the "Test" button, Skype freezes and eventually the terminate application
window comes up.
The webcam is a Logitech that works fine in Cheese, and I've used it with
previous versions of Opensuse and Skype. The only skype available that
I've found is the 2.1 beta version, so that's what I'm using. I'm using
Opensuse 11.4 with KDE4.

I have installed openSuse 11.3 KDE, Due to my laptop being a bit old I am having difficulty nailing down the best graphics driver to work with. My Graphics card is an ATI Radon X1200. By default openSuse uses the Radeon driver for 2D, which is sadly not working quite as well as it should with my old graphics card. My basic problem is not that I can't get 3D (It uses swrast (No 3D Acceleration (7.8.2)), although that would be nice, it is that when I scroll on any page there is lag, and it looks jerky. I have therefore tested with fbdev, vesa, mach64, ati and radeonhd drivers respectively, and right out the gate the fbdev driver gave the best performance with no lag or jerking - surprising for the weakest driver. That said, I was unable to test with radeonhd or vesa due to them having errors. The radeonhd one gave the following:
(EE) FATAL: RadeonHD presently does not work with kernel modesetting (KMS). disable KMS in your kernel. what are the side-affects of disabling KMS, and is it something that I should consider doing, or should I just be happy with using the fbdev driver. As for the vesa driver, I can't remember the error that it gave, so I will have to check and post it up in a bit.

Each time I boot my opensuse 11.2 system one of the very first things that happens is that the system seems to test how fast it can handle my HDD, an older EIDE drive with the wide ribbon cable. This takes about a minute, one test each 15 secs or so until it gets down to about 33 speed and then the boot proceeds as normal.
I guess this is just the normal testing by the more advanced sata procedures in the kernel (2.6.34). If I were only booting this machine once every 6 months it would not be an issue, but I do so at least once a day. Is there any way to indicate to the system the speed of the connection so that it does not have to do the test, or close the gap a bit so that it finds the answer more quickly?

I have installed the latest version of Ubuntu Linux (11.04) into latest VMware workstation (7.1.4 build-385536). I have tried to install the VMware tools ISO that came with VMware workstation but It didn't work and the installation seemed real sloppy anyways.
I installed the open VMware tools from synaptic within the guest linux and restarted, everything seemed to have been installed just fine but VMware Workstation doesn't detect it. I'm not sure if the tools are outdated, silent errors happened, or if any manual post installation steps need to be taken.
getting any form of VMware tools to run in Linux and detected by VMware Workstation.

I completed the installation of VMWare Server 2.0.2 onto a CentOS 5.4 64-bit distribution. There is a VMware virtual machine file on the server in question, and I want to activate it through the application console.
I did not see anything readily apparent that would facilitate the importing of the virtual machine file. Does anyone have a procedure that can accomplish this task?

I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.
I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/
I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.
I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.
In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.
One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.
It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.
The network can be restored by rebooting the image.

Recently upgraded to 11.2, but I think it was a downgrade. VMware 6.5.2 was working great on 11.1. On 11.2 it just fails miserably both during the install and trying to build the modules. So I downloaded VMware 6.5.4 and it hangs even worse during the VMware-Player configuration (doing a make I think). So, let's try out VMware 7. It installed great. Unfortunately I didn't read the release notes - it requires a PAE processor, which I don't have So tried to uninstall VMware 7 so I could try just the VMware-Player free product. VMware was not installed with rpm so rpm can't uninstall it. Then removed all the files manually as per this VMware KB: Manually uninstalling VMware Workstation from Linux hosts VMware-Player installation issues a popup saying "component vmware-workstation 7.0.0 has unsatisfied dependency: vmware-player-app=3.0.0." Before I go back to 11.1 or to some other distro, would anyone know how to really get rid of VMware 7 so that I can try the player only?

I'm running OpenSUSE 11.4 x86 with KDE 4.6 and kernel version 2.6.37.6-0.5. I'm not advanced linux user, though I'm trying to use it occasionally for getting more experience. Now I want to check which of the virtualization software suits me better, I've already tried VirtualBox and now I want to try VMware. I know that it has a lot of products, but for just home use I guess that I need only player. So, when I try to find it through my default repositories, I just was able to find this vmware-guest-kmp-default . I don't know what is it, so I tried to search through the OpenSUSE Build Service, but there's also no player package. I've already downloaded the source from the official site and yes, I do know how to built binaries from the source, but I know also, that after installing in a such way, it would be difficult for the package manager to track the software, as it's not rpm. So I want to ask you first, if you know any other way, to get the RPM package of the VMware Player from any suse repository.

I get the following error when I try to run vmware under opensuse 11.4 64bit:
Code:

The VMware version is: VMware-Workstation-Full-7.1.4-385536.x86_64

Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.5.0", while you are trying to use
