I've seen others here post queries about this, and I'll tell you what it was in my case: our DSL modem's DHCP server returns its own IPV4 address as the DNS server. When I looked at /etc/resolve.conf, I saw "nameserver: 192.168.50.254" on the last line -- the IPV4 address of our DSL modem. I manually inserted "nameserver" lines for our ISP's two actual DNS servers, and everything magically started working. Why this should confuse some software under Linux, but not other software, is a mystery. It also seems to be Gnome-specific (I didn't have this problem with OpenSuse 11.3 and KDE 4).
Ask if they're using Gnome, and ask them to check resolve.conf. A lot of DSL modems and home/small office routers return their own IP address (i.e., the same as the gateway address) for the DNS server on a DHCP query. The solution is to manually edit resolve.conf and put in your ISP's DNS server addresses manually. Incidentally, just my opinion, but Network Manager needs to make this an option. Under Windows, for example, you can select "automatically assign DNS" or you can enter them manually, even if you're using DHCP. It'd be nice if Network Manager permitted that.

I hit Esc and then I see:Code:init: Failed to spawn rc-sysinit main porcess: Unable to open console: Input/Output error.I get stuck there, and the only thing I can do is to hold the power button, shutdown, boot again, and pray it will boot fine. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.

May 8, 2011I am trying to create a launcher in Fedora 13 which will run a simple script named proj4a. I run this script from the command line as follows: $ /home/enowak/proj4a >/home/enowak/proj4a_out where proj4a is an executable file in my home directory and the output goes into a file, proj4a_out, in my home directory. Everything works fine.
I created a launcher called Proj4a and in the command field I entered the following: '/home/enowak/proj4a >/home/enowak/proj4a_out' When I click on the launcher it comes back with the following: There was an error launching the application. Details: Failed to execute child process "/home/enowak/proj4a >/home/enowak/proj4a_out" (No such file or directory) I can't for the life of me figure out what is wrong here. Does anybody see what I'm missing?

Feb 14, 2011I have OpenSuse 11.3 KDE installed in dual boot with Win 7. Have used Ubuntu in the past and remember that whenever I started my computer with Ubuntu, i had a black colored screen which showed various kernel options. So in short I was sure that the Ubuntu installation had updated itself. On the contrary, whenever I start Suse 11.3 KDE, it shows me just one option of Suse 2.6.34.7-0.7
I have doubts, is Suse up-to-date, and also there is mention of KDE 4.6 on kde.org website.
But my operating system information is as follows:
KDE: 4.4.4 (KDE 4.4.4) "release 3"
OS: Linux 2.6.34.7 -0.7 -default i686
System: openSUSE 11.3 (i586)
I have also seen that on 10th Mar 2011, Suse 11.4 will be realeased. Will update/ upgrade of this installation work in this direction?

Fedora Servers :: Process Of Updating All The Clients Nodes To The Same OS?
Jun 22, 2011I'm having a problem with NFS. I'm trying to mount /home, which is on the server, to the client nodes. The server is currently running FC14 (64 bit) and I'm in the process of updating all the clients nodes to the same OS. Currently, all the client nodes are running FC8 (32 bit) and are capable of mounting /home on the server. However, the one client node that I have updated to FC14 is having problems mounting /home. I can ssh to the node with no problem however I get the following message:
Could not chdir to home directory /home/myuserid: Permission denied. Now, if I excute the following command: "sudo mount -a" I get no errors and now I can see my home directory.

Aug 3, 2009I am running F11 and I want to mount an FTP, but when I try to connect to an ftp server using Places -> Connect to Server, or the bookmarks I made I get an error that says 'Failed to execute child process "/usr/lib/firefox-3.5/firefox" (No such file or directory)' and sometimes it mounts anyway, but most the time it doesn't, and it never connects to the folder I asked it to, I just have to open the mount and navigate to it. I figure this happened because Firefox upgraded to 3.5.1 and the folder is now /usr/lib/firefox-3.5.1/firefox, but I don't know how to update this so that it looks in the right location.

Nov 2, 2010I am currently trying to upgrade over 100 rpms on multiple Red Hat servers. Whenever I try to do a rpm -u /packages/*.rpm i recieve a failed dependencies error on the very first rpm. I know that I can go though each rpm one by one and trace each dependency but that will take forever. Is there a way to skip these errors? I know the -nodeps command for rpm but I dont want to screw something up but running all of these rpms on -nodeps

"failed to execute child process skype-wrapper" First test out if skype runs from the command line, by running this in a terminal
Code: skype & If it runs, you're good to go: simply right click on the menu, locate your entry for skype and change the command to launch it from skype-wrapper to skype. The reason for this is that in the 2.1 version, skype needed a script called skype-wrapper to set some varibles before start up. Upgrading removes the script, but failed to update the menu entry.
