I have a Pentium3 & P4 with fresh 11.2 installs. Can I capture the update files from one to be used on the other? These boxes aren't connected together, but each has an unused LAN card if that would help. Each box has a 56K modem that runs about 40K! I haven't started the update process yet, so I don't know if there any new options to the SW Management tools in 11.2.

I want to dual boot openSUSE 11.2 and Windows 7. I already have Windows 7 installed but I have encountered multiple issues in the past with trying to make dual boots. Usually when I install Linux, GRUB decides it wants to go into world domination mode, and "breaks" my Windows installation. I have reason to believe this is because the distros I use come with legacy GRUB, (v0.97) and for some odd reason it lacks commands such as "update-grub" etc. This means I cannot add Windows 7 to the boot menu without going into extreme complications, which have NEVER, I repeat NEVER succeeded. When I boot the Windows drive directly, I get some error about GRUB not finding the device, and it puts me into a grub rescue command line. Now I am no expert in this field at all, but wouldn't that mean that GRUB wrote itself to the MBR of...oh I don't know, ALL of my hard drives? I really want to install openSUSE 11.2, but from bad experience I am really put off as I know that it ships with legacy GRUB v0.97.I am also running Fedora 13 at the moment, I have quite an experimental dual boot running..been trying to get GRUB 2 for hours now, it is definitely there but no commands work, "upgrade-grub-from-legacy" and "update-grub" return with command not found. I've heard this is just a bug but can anybody confirm that there will definitely be a way for me to "fix" my windows installation after it gets "broken" by GRUB?Second idea, unplug my windows hard drive while openSUSE installs?

The device is not configured. Press Edit for configuration.and I have no idea about this one, since the modem is installed on the board, what does it mean it is not connected? My problem is after installing the modem i can not make a dial up connection via network manager, because there is no dial up option to choose from. which is also odd.
I have an external usb dial up modem. lsusb shows: Bus 001 Device 002: ID 2001:f10d D-Link Corp. [hex] Accent Communications Modem How do I set this up? It probably needs a driver, how do I check it, or better yet, can I get yast to tell me if it recognizes the modem or needs firmware? I know linux and dial up is like the seventh circle of hell. Just wondering if there was a snowball's chances of getting this working. Sorry if this is the wrong section to ask in. Seemed like as good as any when I checked.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a US Robotics serial modem, and I have smpppd enabled in system services, with wvdial and kppp installed. When I try to set the modem up using yast, I keep getting hung up by the different screens. First a screen that asks if I need to dial a number to get out. I have to dial 9, so I have that entered. Then a screen that asks for "country" and "provider."
When I try to enter anything, nothing shows in the boxes, so I go to a screen that asks for the phone number, provider, user name and password. When I enter those, it goes to a screen that wants "Connection Parameters", with default settings and the "buttons" at the bottom of the screen "muted," or flattened out, i.e. unusable. That makes it impossible for me to set the information as saved, so it's back to the beginning and sart over, with the same results over and over. How do I get the modem so it dials out?
I have a little problem going on with my openSUSE 11.3 // GNOME computer. Whenever I install a RPM package, whether it be from a .rpm in my Downloads, etc. or from the zypper repositories, they never have an icon. I continuously have to go to Google and find an icon for my application and change the launcher's properties in my menu.
why this is happening and how I may be able to fix it? It's getting a little tedious having to do this for everything that I install.
It's been a while since I've logged into this forum, but I'm back to using openSUSE, and my experience with this OS has so far been quite pleasant. I have a U.S. Robotics Dial-up modem, model USR5637, that I've used with other linux OS's, such as Ubuntu, Fedora, and Puppy, but I haven't had any luck using this modem with openSUSE. This is a full hardware modem.
Usually, when using this modem on a new Ubuntu system, I got into the terminal, type "lsmod" and then "modprobe cdc_acm" and the modem begins to work. However, in openSUSE this is not the case. I'm using Gnome and KDE, with kppp, and I'm unable to connect to the internet. Is there a way of installing this modem that I am overlooking?
I'm new to openSUSE and yesterday I managed to multi-boot successfully with version 11.1 for 64 bit processor (live cd).I have a MultiTech multimodem-usb (MT5634ZBA-USB)and have it running fine in two other LINUX distros using KPPP as well as wvdial. To try and get it working in SUSE, I went to YaST administrative tools for network devices (I think that was section, as I have to recall from memory or write it down since I can't connect from openSUSE, so bear with me) and chose modem and it detected the modem correctly as ttyACM0. My isp uses a dynamic address, and that is what is ticked in ISP information. Default Route is also ticked, though I'm unsure what that setting is for. I enter the phone number, the authorization name (ex. me@myispdotnet) and pretty much choose the default settings for the rest of the modem and provider set up. It shows kernel interface: modem 0. I let YaST finish configuring it, and I see kinternet icon and click on it and it dials up successfully, all lights on my modem are lit up, the icon plug is joined, and I can see it try to ping but fails (I can't surf in konqueror or firefox). When I look at kinternet log, it states name server failureno name server found in /etc/resolv.confI know how to use wvdial so I tried that alternative dial up tool and it also says name server not found.
I tried adding the SUSE nameservers in the network device set up GUI as it has a place to add two nameservers, but when I did that, the modem wouldn't dial out. When I logged back into openSUSE, there was no kinternet icon in the bottom toolbar, so I clicked on kinternet under applications, and it said:Error KinternetConnection to local and remote server refused. Maybe your smppd is not running or you are not a member of group dial out.I went to YaST>system services and smppd enabled yes. I also checked user settings and I am a member of group for dialout.That is the only group I am a member of as I didn't want to change anything there, not yet. I tried reconfiguring my modem again to see if I could get kinternet up and running, but it wouldn't show up in the bottom bar and the error above would show whenever I clicked on kinternet under applications.
The only how to I found was this, but I don't know how to edit a read-only file in openSUSE. I'm familair with kdesu and gksu, but not using vi to edit a read only file.as I have been spending hours on this and getting no where. If kppp worked, I'd install it and use it, but I need a connection first to get it. But I guess if wvdial doesn't work, then kppp won't either until the nameserver issue is resolved.Should I edit the resolv.conf file and add the nameservers manually? Again, I'm not sure how to do this as root in openSUSE.
I want to configure a Gprs dial up connection through my Nokia N91 to surf internet in openSUSE. I am using openSUSE 11.2 installed as a guest OS in ORACLE VIRTUALBOX (virtual pc) in windows host. I connected my mobile to openSUSE using a data cable and the phone modem is detected. I configured Wvdial.conf file and used Wvdial to connect to the internet. After performing many changes I finally managed to get a successful connection, when still I cannot surf any webpage in the browser.
The only error that I get during wvdial connection is about Namespace (DNS) failed. I am using a AIRTEL (India) gprs internet connection.
Over the past couple of years i have been converting other users (family members that I have to provide technical support to ) from windows to opensuse.Needless to say, my job is much easier now. Is there some application that I can install on the supported computers where I can remotely log in and control, make configuration changes, update, and fix dumb problems... when they come up?

View 8 Replies View RelatedOpenSuse and rpm. Been using Debian for 7 years, so be gentle. I upgrade KDE 4.3.1 to 4.3.5 through the one-click install. After confirming some actions due to dependencies the install runs and in the end it said it failed to install a bunch of packages. These packages installed just fine and everything works as it should.
I was wondering if this happens more often, as it makes me kinda nervous if the installer warns me? Perhaps even more if it warns about things that aren't correct.
Following some advice here elsewhere about changing a login screen which actually declared that extra KDE stuff did not get installed when installing KDM I found exactly the opposite to be the case when I tried! installed KDM via the yast installer which seemed to be a small 4MB install. However lots and lots of other KDE stuff DID get installed alongside it. 187 MB in fact! 187 MB that's 183 MB I never asked to be installed!
The bad thing is that removing KDM and the KDEBase package does not remove all these components which are now firmly embedded in the system including Oxygen Firefox theme and all sorts of other KDE branding. Could anyone advise how short of reinstalling 11.3 from scratch I can get rid of all this guff the KDM install has introduced into the system by apparently exploiting some bug or other in the installer.... Uninstalling KDM and KDEBase has only uninstalled the 4MB I thought I had chosen. The other 183 MB it glued to my system seems to be invisible to the Yast installer although there are many lines in the history file /var/log/zypp
I have two suse installation, in one I placed on the dashboard a "note" (widget) with some notes, how can I share this notes in the other installation? Where can I found the file to make a link?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI created an rpm that attempts to install the file /etc/rsyslog.conf (which on my system is already installed and owned by the rsyslog package). When I install this through rpm, I get the appropriate error. However, when I install the rpm through zypper, I get no complaints, and in the end two packages end up owning the file.
Is this the expected behavior? Does zypper force install rpms despite errors? I looked through all the config files, but couldn't find any setting dealing with this case. Is this something that is controlled by a config somewhere? I'm running openSUSE 11.2-0

I'm currently on opensuse 11.1 and I was looking at the upgrade to 11.2 because it has the DeviceKit package I was wanting But being as the 11.2 uses the ext4 instead of ext3 it may be just a little more than I would like can I, instead, just install the package from the 11.2 into my 11.1 system or is that ext4/ext3 thing gonna hork that up ?just kinda liking the whole " my system works just fine " thing and not really wanting to reload the box..
View 3 Replies View RelatedCaution to all using ati graphics download repository. I have been using SUSE 11.4 after an upgrade from 11.3 through zypper for months. I added ati graphics as a update repository. Software update installed two ati files. I did not notice their names.
Upon installation my graphics was acting funny so I uninstalled the two ati-files figuring I'd be back to where I was. Now I can only get into terminal window after reboot at both runlevel 3 and 5; no graphics at all. I keep getting message re: display 'null' I wish to return to original graphics configuration prior to ati downloads which, I believed used xorg drivers.
I believe I either need to revise xorg.conf file back to original which was overwritten by ati process or reinstall xorg/X11 related files. I have an ati radeon HD 3450 agp card. 32 bit SUSE w/11.4 installed and running. Anyone have a sample xorg.conf that might work or some other ideas of how to get back to where I was.
As a related question, if I do a fresh reinstall of SUSE 11.4 using dvd can I save my /home files and any /filesystem files that my special software created in root directories.
How can I make the security applet stop showing an update for firefox 3.5.9? I have a more recent version installed from mozilla repo: firefox 3.6. The mozilla repo already has a higher priority (95 instead of 99), so I don't know what to do.

Is there a way to disable all popup notifications in openSUSE while still having it check for updates periodically. What I would like is for the notification icon to appear when an update is available but to not popup the notification message, or worse, show that dialog stating that some software sources were not available when I'm on the corporate network.
Also, is it possible to disable some updates like the recent KDE one? I right click it and there is an option to disable notification of an update but the menu item is disabled.
I use Dial-up service by BSNL (India). Ubuntu asks me to enter the DNS address.
