View 1 RepliesI have been working for the last week trying to connect my serial hardware external modem (courier 56K v.everything) within an Ubuntu 10.4 environment. I live in the boonies where I am presently forced to use dial up, so this has got to work, else I cannot update Ubuntu or download software. After trying various suggestions, which my very limited Linux skills fail me, I opted for the suggestion that I download gnome-ppp, install and then use it. Seeing how I cannot download it through Synaptic Package Manager (which I was advised to but can't as it is my Linux computer that I am trying to connect).
I downloaded the zipped file (gnome-ppp_0.3.23_Oubuntu2.tar.gz ) to a USB stick, copied it to the home directory and then extracted it, wherein a new directory was created with many files in it. From here I have been unable to install it through the command line (not sure how), nor have I been able, as was suggested, to install it via the Synaptic Package Manager (can't get it to see the file, not sure how to). I need explicit (Newbie) instructions on how either to connect the modem without gnome-ppp, or instructions on how to get gnome-ppp installed.
I have installed my modem via YaST. It has been detected. but it is a bit odd, when I see this message in Modem Configuration Overview window. Under Modem Device tab I have the followings: this one I believe should be my modem:
HTML Code:
82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Modem Controller
and this one is my ISP provider settings that I just created.
HTML Code:
modem0 Modem Easy-Dial up
My modem is a PCI modem and it has been detected just fine by SUSE 11.3 but I have this info also at the bottom.
HTML Code:
82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Modem Controller (not connected)
The device is not configured. Press Edit for configuration.and I have no idea about this one, since the modem is installed on the board, what does it mean it is not connected? My problem is after installing the modem i can not make a dial up connection via network manager, because there is no dial up option to choose from. which is also odd.
I just installed Lucid Lynx Ubuntu on my computer. I love it, but I do not see how to configure my dial-up modem and connect. I'm hoping it's still possible. Here's my hardware.
333mHz Pentium III
Lucid Lynx 10.04 LTS
US-Robotics 56K Faxmodem External
256mb RAM
ISP OmniLEC
I have servers in remote locations where I have no control over the network routers or firewalls. I need to have a VPN connection to my servers. Is there a way to create a PPTP VPN connection automatically? I don't want to initiate it, I just want it to phone home, and keep phoning home if the connection is dropped.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi am having trouble connecting to the broadband connection which needs to dial the username and password but as i am very new in the linux how can i connect to the internet. i use ubantu 10.04. is there any application to dial username and password and connect to internet?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI use an atom based processor of 1.60 ghz on intel d945gclf board. My ram is a zion 1gb @ 533mhz. Hdd is from western digital 80gb @ 7200 rpm. I have a broadband(dsl) connection from bsnl dataone (a state owned telecom service provider). I connect to internet via a huawei wa1003a ethernet/usb/wireless modem which is provided by my service provider. I need a username and a password everytime i connect to internet via dial-up.
I was using windows xp service pack ii. It was nice and easy installing my modem on xp either via usb or ethernet. Both ways it was easy as i have both the drivers with me.Only and main problem was fighting viruses. I tried many free downloadable anti-virus software to protect my maching. Initially they were fine. But after few months they stopped taking regular updates and became non-functional. I also tried symantec corporate v.10. But it has its drawbacks also. It made my machine perform like a snail.I had previously heard about linux based operating systems. But never tried one. As i am an ameteur in using computers windows xp was suiting my needs. Recently i saw an article in the newspaper about ubuntu which is a free open source operating system. And most important to me it is virus free. But here is a problem also. I cannot connect to internet. My ubuntu 9.10 karmic koala is not identifying my modem and a network between my modem and my machine cannot be established. Also i cannot create a dial-up option where i can give username and password.
Ive been looking, and even tho dial up stinks, its better than nothing for me out here in the woods. I downloaded gnome-ppp. This should work for a linux friendly serial modem (US Robotics 9637 USB external)which is on the way.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble getting online, and therefore getting software, codecs etc, (I'm using another computer for this post) because the only option I have to connect to the web is through 56k dial-up modem, and this is apparently akward with ubuntu. I'm currently trying to work out how to get Ubuntu to recognize my modem. I have over-written Vista, which was previously on my laptop, although I did make recovery discs (though I really don't want to have to use them).
This is making it difficult for me to even find the model of my modem (it would involve reinstalling Vista and checking for the device under device manager, or Vista equivalent).I was advised to download the "Official Ubuntu documentation", and that this had a 'how to' section regarding dial-up modems. I downloaded it and searched it and found nothing as such. I also have downloaded the Ubuntu pocket guide and found nothing on the topic in it either.I can get online (via dial-up) on my XP machine, and also have USB storage sticks.
I need to know if there is any dial up accelerators for Ubuntu. The ISP I need them for is Localnet.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using an external Huawei CDMA fixed wireless terminal (phone + dial-up modem). It connects to my PC via a USB port. Actually my PC recognizes it (after driver installation) as "TIUMP Serial Port". I guess the driver is a kind of USB adapter for a serial port.
I can't get it to work in ubuntu 9.10. I ran wvdial (after installing dependencies and wvdial package) and it doesn't recognize my device as a modem. Is there any solution to this problem? Without solving it, I won't be able to go online from ubuntu.
He's on dial-up so getting updates and installing packages such as restricted extras would be painful. I'm thinking Mint but have little personal experience with distros beyond Ubuntu.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI ordered the CD but I guess you can't update from that. I was gonna go to the library but they say it takes in excess of 4 hours. I guess the option is the alternate CD but there are a couple of options and not sure which one.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI use ubuntu 9.10 and PCI connected Conexant CX11252 Modem. My GNOME PPP doesn't detects my modem. How can I create a connection? Is there any way to detect my modem and connect ? or ubuntu is fit only for broadband? I think most of the activities in ubuntu depends on internet. I can't do any work. I am losing my money in Internet Cafe. Broadband is even not available in my resident area. Therefore. find a solution to connect internet via my dial up modem!
View 9 Replies View RelatedOne of my clients brought a laptop to me with a 64 bit processor and wanted to hook up his zoom 3095 usb dial-up (56k) modem to a his laptop using ubuntu 9.10 AMD 64 bit version. We quickly found out that zoom has only made 32 bit drivers for linux. So...I need to find a usb modem that has drivers that will work with a 64 bit version of ubuntu 9.10.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have only a dial-up connection. I've been using the 32-bit version of WVDIAL and its associated programs in Karmic Koala for over a year. I recently finally got around to installing Maverick Meerkat on a different drive. The 64-bit version. I see that I need the 64-bit version of the modem software, and I haven't found it right away. Where can I get it? The programs required under 32-bit Karmic Koala:
libwvstreams4.6-base
libwvstreams4.6-extras
libuniconf4.6
wvdial
All of these had .deb filename extensions. Also, largely because I only have a slow dial-up connection, I don't have any updates for either Karmic Koala or Maverick Meerkat installed. If you happen to know that I absolutely need some particular update(s)
I have tried to install Gnome 3 in ubuntu 11.04 and rebooted without installing the gnome-shell. In consequence I see some error messages followed by blank screen after I enter my password in Gnome session, it says failed to load any session. So I have decided to install it by booting to recovery mood to the terminal console by connecting to my existing (working) DSL connection already set up in the Network Manager. Therefore, I need the command how to dial the existing DSL connection via terminal.

Your US Robotics modem attached at /dev/ttyACM0 >>> The problemt: wvdial for some reason cannot use it
I had to edit the /etc/wvdial.conf file with gksudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf
john@ubuntu:~$ sudo wvdial
[sudo] password for john:
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot get information for serial port

View 3 Replies View Relatedi connect to the internet via my nokia 7230 as a modem.i am quite satisfied with the speed i get(around 40KB/s). yesterday i could share the internet connection wi-fi between XP host and ubuntu guest. i just can't figure out how to do this with ubuntu host and XP guest.i am able to create a wireless network...and my XP also connects to that. but the problem comes with the internet sharing part. also i wanted to know, what is the option "Auto-eth0" under wired connection in network settings.
View 1 Replies View Relatedim wanting to reinstall ubuntu 11.04 but do not want to lose all my speed dial bookmarks. As i can see i have 3 options but would rather have the 4th by being able to just reload my speed dial settings.
1. copy all my speed dial bookmark sites to firefox bookmarks and turn on home sync so i have a copy of all sites
2. copy all my speed dial bookmark sites to firefox bookmarks and use xmarks(foxmarks)
3. write down all my speed dial sites and start afresh when i reinstall
4. reinstall ubuntu and then speed dial and somehow by magic my settings are there ?
if only firefox had like a log in facility and wether you had to reboot or use another pc all your personal settings could be there.

I've read and bookmarked various info on configuring modem, including PPP and wvdial info. But one question: Is there a particular version # of Ubuntu best for external dial-up modem use? I have the CD for 9.10 Desktop edition. It seems that different Ubuntu versions include some things, others not. Another Q: Reading this page about wvdial, it refers only to serial modems. Does the info apply to USB modems, like the USRobotics 5637? [URL]
I have a Pentium3 & P4 with fresh 11.2 installs. Can I capture the update files from one to be used on the other? These boxes aren't connected together, but each has an unused LAN card if that would help. Each box has a 56K modem that runs about 40K! I haven't started the update process yet, so I don't know if there any new options to the SW Management tools in 11.2.
