OpenSUSE :: Remove KDM And KDEBase Extraneous Installs?
Jan 21, 2011
Following some advice here elsewhere about changing a login screen which actually declared that extra KDE stuff did not get installed when installing KDM I found exactly the opposite to be the case when I tried! installed KDM via the yast installer which seemed to be a small 4MB install. However lots and lots of other KDE stuff DID get installed alongside it. 187 MB in fact! 187 MB that's 183 MB I never asked to be installed!
The bad thing is that removing KDM and the KDEBase package does not remove all these components which are now firmly embedded in the system including Oxygen Firefox theme and all sorts of other KDE branding. Could anyone advise how short of reinstalling 11.3 from scratch I can get rid of all this guff the KDM install has introduced into the system by apparently exploiting some bug or other in the installer.... Uninstalling KDM and KDEBase has only uninstalled the 4MB I thought I had chosen. The other 183 MB it glued to my system seems to be invisible to the Yast installer although there are many lines in the history file /var/log/zypp

I am trying to install the beta of kdepim for testing. I am using the repo here
Index of /repositories/KDE:/Unstable:/SC:/kdepim45/KDE_Distro_Factory_openSUSE_11.3
I used the one click install for kdepim4 4.4.93 and it pulled in the kde distro factory 4.5.1 repo as well automatically, but when I try to install any of the beta stuff, it complains of requiring kdebase4-runtime >= 4.5.2 which doesn't exist anywhere. So do I have to test the entire kde unstable or can I just test kdepim (what i really want to do) as the post on news.kde.org indicated.

I attempted to install gnucash just now to test it out, but, in the middle of the installation (which I was doing through Terminal), something happened and dpkg was interrupted. I'm unable to provide the Terminal output because (a) for some reason, prior to the error messages about a segment fault, the terminal shows a number of blank lines and does not show me what happened before the segfault, and (b) after the segfault, when I tried starting up gedit or make a screen capture, the prompt windows were blank, so I was unable to save the terminal output to either.
When I restarted Ubuntu, it told me that /tmp was not ready; I waited for it to mount, and, apparently, it did, as Ubuntu restarted fine. I tried updating my software, as the icon in my panel was telling me I needed updates. However, it told me that dpkg had been interrupted and that I needed to troubleshoot it with sudo apt-get install -f, which then told me to run sudo dpkg --configure -a, which I did, receiving the following output:
Code:
sqlu@thalamus:~$ sudo apt-get install -f
[sudo] password for sqlu:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
sqlu@thalamus:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
Setting up libktoblzcheck1c2a (1.24-2) .....
It looks like there were errors with a number of packages, and I'm guessing something else might have also broken. Since I'm already using homebank and don't really need to use gnucash, I was wondering if there was a way for me to check what was installed by gnucash and remove those packages, since they're cluttering my system, and I'm concerned that they might interfere with other packages if they're broken or something. I've been using Ubuntu for about two years now and have some knowledge of the command line and such, but I'd say my skills are still pretty basic. I'm running 64-bit 10.04.

I'm looking for a way to install kdebase 4.7 with no additional dependencies. My target is home desktop and I only want these : kdm, plasma, ark, dolphin, kdesu, konsole, okteta, kwrite, kate, kmix, ksnapshot. There are things I don't use but they get installed anyway and break kdm if removed. These things are : akonadi, strigi, nepomuk, virtuoso, kfind, kgreeter and a couple of others, including libqtzeitgeist0 and PIM in general. Also I don't want kdm 4.7 features hence I use kdm3 as a login manager. Is there a 4.7 build that doesn't mind the removal of so called base components? If not, is there a 4.4 repo for 11.4?

I want to dual boot openSUSE 11.2 and Windows 7. I already have Windows 7 installed but I have encountered multiple issues in the past with trying to make dual boots. Usually when I install Linux, GRUB decides it wants to go into world domination mode, and "breaks" my Windows installation. I have reason to believe this is because the distros I use come with legacy GRUB, (v0.97) and for some odd reason it lacks commands such as "update-grub" etc. This means I cannot add Windows 7 to the boot menu without going into extreme complications, which have NEVER, I repeat NEVER succeeded. When I boot the Windows drive directly, I get some error about GRUB not finding the device, and it puts me into a grub rescue command line. Now I am no expert in this field at all, but wouldn't that mean that GRUB wrote itself to the MBR of...oh I don't know, ALL of my hard drives? I really want to install openSUSE 11.2, but from bad experience I am really put off as I know that it ships with legacy GRUB v0.97.I am also running Fedora 13 at the moment, I have quite an experimental dual boot running..been trying to get GRUB 2 for hours now, it is definitely there but no commands work, "upgrade-grub-from-legacy" and "update-grub" return with command not found. I've heard this is just a bug but can anybody confirm that there will definitely be a way for me to "fix" my windows installation after it gets "broken" by GRUB?Second idea, unplug my windows hard drive while openSUSE installs?

I have a little problem going on with my openSUSE 11.3 // GNOME computer. Whenever I install a RPM package, whether it be from a .rpm in my Downloads, etc. or from the zypper repositories, they never have an icon. I continuously have to go to Google and find an icon for my application and change the launcher's properties in my menu.
why this is happening and how I may be able to fix it? It's getting a little tedious having to do this for everything that I install.

Over the past couple of years i have been converting other users (family members that I have to provide technical support to ) from windows to opensuse.Needless to say, my job is much easier now. Is there some application that I can install on the supported computers where I can remotely log in and control, make configuration changes, update, and fix dumb problems... when they come up?

I have a Pentium3 & P4 with fresh 11.2 installs. Can I capture the update files from one to be used on the other? These boxes aren't connected together, but each has an unused LAN card if that would help. Each box has a 56K modem that runs about 40K! I haven't started the update process yet, so I don't know if there any new options to the SW Management tools in 11.2.

OpenSuse and rpm. Been using Debian for 7 years, so be gentle. I upgrade KDE 4.3.1 to 4.3.5 through the one-click install. After confirming some actions due to dependencies the install runs and in the end it said it failed to install a bunch of packages. These packages installed just fine and everything works as it should.
I was wondering if this happens more often, as it makes me kinda nervous if the installer warns me? Perhaps even more if it warns about things that aren't correct.

Cannot access installation media [URL] (Medium1). Check whether the server is accessible File '/repodata/repomd.xml' not found on medium '[URL]'. This has been happening whenever I try to update the system, install new packages from software.openSUSE.org or from Software Management. I installed openSUSE to test while I repaired another system, I'm more familiar with Debian. I've been checking any offered additional repositories when I install software, this is probably my problem. How do I remove the "Death_Knight" profile from my repros and do I need to install another in it's place?

I created an rpm that attempts to install the file /etc/rsyslog.conf (which on my system is already installed and owned by the rsyslog package). When I install this through rpm, I get the appropriate error. However, when I install the rpm through zypper, I get no complaints, and in the end two packages end up owning the file.
Is this the expected behavior? Does zypper force install rpms despite errors? I looked through all the config files, but couldn't find any setting dealing with this case. Is this something that is controlled by a config somewhere? I'm running openSUSE 11.2-0
Code:
linux:/usr/src/packages/RPMS/x86_64 # rpm -i testfile-2.0.1-0.x86_64.rpm
file /etc/rsyslog.conf from install of testfile-2.0.1-0.x86_64 conflicts with file from package rsyslog-4.4.1-3.1.x86_64

Caution to all using ati graphics download repository. I have been using SUSE 11.4 after an upgrade from 11.3 through zypper for months. I added ati graphics as a update repository. Software update installed two ati files. I did not notice their names.
Upon installation my graphics was acting funny so I uninstalled the two ati-files figuring I'd be back to where I was. Now I can only get into terminal window after reboot at both runlevel 3 and 5; no graphics at all. I keep getting message re: display 'null' I wish to return to original graphics configuration prior to ati downloads which, I believed used xorg drivers.
I believe I either need to revise xorg.conf file back to original which was overwritten by ati process or reinstall xorg/X11 related files. I have an ati radeon HD 3450 agp card. 32 bit SUSE w/11.4 installed and running. Anyone have a sample xorg.conf that might work or some other ideas of how to get back to where I was.
As a related question, if I do a fresh reinstall of SUSE 11.4 using dvd can I save my /home files and any /filesystem files that my special software created in root directories.

Distribution = Oracle Unbreakable Linux 5.4 x86_64Machine = HP DL180 2U ServerModifications = LSI SAS/SATA PCIExpress CardSo I plop 5.4 on this box, and install goes great, but then when I try to reboot the machine ('install is complete, click to reboot'), it won't go... post completes, fibre card and sas card get done with their posts, and then it just craps out when you'd expect it to start loading the OS.So I thought the card was bad... stuck the horrendous HP Storageworks PCIExpress SAS card back into it and had the same behavior, good install, but boot failure.
Bios is set to defer to the PCI card for boot priority -- first bios boot device is the DVD drive, then it defers to the card. With the LSI, I had chosen physical drive 0 (1st one) to boot. With the HP Storageworks, you can't boot physical drives, so I just made a logical drive from one physical drive and went that route... same behavior

I am having a problem getting F10 to boot after install.I downloaded the DVD, burned it and installed from it. No errors during the installation but when I go to reboot the system comes up saying:"VolGroup00 not foundUnable to access resume device (/dev/volgroup00/logvol01)Mount: error mounting /dev/root/ on /sysroot as ext3:h file or directory"This is being installed into an AMD Opteron Blade with an Adaptec SC2000 controller card, 4 SCSI disks configured in a RAID 5 array.I gather it's looking at the wrong device for a boot track/loader, but not sure how to fix thisAny ideas? I figured if it found it during install it should find it during boot but that doesn't seem to be the case

I'm pretty new with boot loaders, and I'm having some troubles. I had Ubuntu 11.04 installed and working pretty well, but I went to give Fedora 15 a try. I thought dual boot would be ideal.
So I used some free space in my HD, installed Fedora 15 Live USB, / in one partion, and /home in another, and a swap.
I always use /boot in another 100 MB partition at the start of the disk, so during the F15 bootloader, I directed it to the /boot partition.
After reboot, I can get into F15, but when I select 'other' I get an error message (sorry, its hard to remember "boot img not found, press cntrl alt del " )
In a panic, I used an old boot cd, ubuntu 10.10, created yet another really tiny partition of 2.3 gigs from free space, and installed its bootloader in my /boot partition again.
I can boot back into Ubuntu 11.04 (or 10.10, which I will see nuke anyways.) But no fedora choice anymore at all?
Is there a boot cd/tool that I can use to read all 3 of my OS, and allow me to boot into the one I want?
Or should I reinstall a Fresh F15 (since i've not done anything) and make different changes during install ?
Any reason why F15 and Ubuntu can't see each other during their installs?

I have tried many things but none of which seem to work.
Motherboard : N2PAP-LITE
Processor : AMD SEMPRON 2800+ (32 Bit)
Stock FSB Settings : 166/333MHz
Chipset : NVIDIA NFORCE2
This is a really odd problem. It installs under 133/266MHz and runs fine. When it's at 133/266 it reconizes it as AMD ATHLON XP in the BIOS and the Linux Installation. I want to be able to install it using 166/333MHz which is the stock setting of the processor! When I set it to that in the BIOS it reconizes as a AMD SEMPRON 2800+ but will not install Ubuntu 9.10.
This is the error I get if I try to run it from the CD, Install it, or boot from the current installation which I installed it with 133/266MHz. If anyone can please help me figure this out it would be great, im trying to use it as a server and would not like to bottleneck it as it shouldn't be. I get these errors
Code:
check_bugs+0xbb/0xe9
start_kernel+0x2dc/0x2ec
? unknown_bootoption+0x0/0x1ab
i386_start_kernel+0x7c/0x83
Now if you want the whole error list I will type it up.This is a link for the motherboard manual.

I burnt a 10.04 LTS disc when it was released and just tried installing on an old Pentium 2 400 MHz with 320 MB and two 10 GB drives. After rebooting, it comes up in text mode with a tty2 login. Did this install the server version only? Is there a command to launch the GUI shell? There were no options during the install to choose GUI or server version and I assumed this was the 32-bit GUI version and the install disc ran we GUI during installation.

Friend asked me an interesting question today. We were talking about having a 'fallback' option in Ubuntu / other Linux distros so that if you wanted to default to stock ubuntu with none of your personal additions (excluding updates)and we came up with the idea that if dpkg / apt would install anything NEW to /opt, then you could go back to a vanilla install by just doing and then you have a essentially a clean install.
Out of curiosity more than anything else, we started looking around, googling possible ways to phrase that question and nothing came up. So does anyone know of a way to set that up?I know you can add /opt/ to your PATH variable so that you can put an executable there and BASH will find it. But I didn't know if you could do it for install things there by default. If nothing else at least it would give Ubuntu a more centralized place to install applications / view all parts of a applications because roaming through /etc/, /usr/, /bin/ and everything else that comes with the "AWESOME" Filesystem Hierarchy we still have is a pain.
