I ordered the CD but I guess you can't update from that. I was gonna go to the library but they say it takes in excess of 4 hours. I guess the option is the alternate CD but there are a couple of options and not sure which one.
View 7 RepliesI have a Pentium3 & P4 with fresh 11.2 installs. Can I capture the update files from one to be used on the other? These boxes aren't connected together, but each has an unused LAN card if that would help. Each box has a 56K modem that runs about 40K! I haven't started the update process yet, so I don't know if there any new options to the SW Management tools in 11.2.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get dial up working using wvdial, kppp or system-config-network. Whatever I try, it shows "no modem found." I'm using a US Robotics serial modem that's worked with other linux set-ups, so I know it's not the modem. What's the command to find a serial modem in the terminal? lspci doesn't show it.
And any info on getting any of these to work..especially system-config-network! Had it working with linux Mint's LXDE on an older Thinkpad, but something happened after an up date (kept saying that an IBM system was detected and refusing to load a module when it booted.) After update, didn't show that warning, perhaps loading the module.
Old Thinkpad hasn't loaded an operating system since! Won't even load gparted so I can get something else on it.....so I'm sticking with Fedora until I can figure it out. Got another old Thinkpad, don't want to repeat the same mistake. Guessing that it's a debian problem, as Mint's never broken anything before.

I have looked elsewhere for an answer and some others have had similar problems, but I have not found a reason for it happening, nor an answer. I wonder if anyone can help me please. I have been using Ubuntu for several months, can use the Terminal if I have the right commands to issue, but beyond that have limited knowledge of the system.
having had problems with getting grub2 to work on dual HDD setup...despite the most excellent advice on the forum i took the plunge and installed 10.10 from update manager within 10.04..... bingo fixed grub and now have dual boot again. but the update manager and synaptic package don't work because of libedata-cal1.2-6 file that remains..following other advice on the forum Advice gratefully received, how can i force an unistall of this package

View 7 Replies View RelatedI started the upgrade to 10.4 from 9.10 through the update manager. It started the update to 10.4. After downloading almost 95% of the update, it gave an error message of "could not download certain components. downloaded files will not be erased" and stopped the update. I restarted the PC, and started the update manager again. But now it does not show any option of update to 10.4. how do I continue or resume the update process? I just started using ubuntu about 15 days back. So, I am relatively new to this.

Ubuntu Restricted Extras stalls when it's time to download the Java package I tried synaptic, update manager, aptitude, apt-get, and they all throw similar errors. Then I also tried connecting to different servers, to no avail. So to check if it's my connection to the net that has problems somehow, I tried downloading the file directly through my web browser, and it works. (But it's not recommended, and it won't let me!, install the updates manually, right?) I tried searching for the errors on the net and in the forums, and they're all somehow related to proxy servers. I then checked if I'm using some inappropriate proxy settings, and everywhere it's all set up to connect to the net directly, which is, well, my setup.
Take note though, that I am able to install other softwares normally, i.e, using synaptic, apt-get etc. The ones I tried include Pidgin and Mplayer. It's just these updates and Java:

I'm having trouble getting online, and therefore getting software, codecs etc, (I'm using another computer for this post) because the only option I have to connect to the web is through 56k dial-up modem, and this is apparently akward with ubuntu. I'm currently trying to work out how to get Ubuntu to recognize my modem. I have over-written Vista, which was previously on my laptop, although I did make recovery discs (though I really don't want to have to use them).
This is making it difficult for me to even find the model of my modem (it would involve reinstalling Vista and checking for the device under device manager, or Vista equivalent).I was advised to download the "Official Ubuntu documentation", and that this had a 'how to' section regarding dial-up modems. I downloaded it and searched it and found nothing as such. I also have downloaded the Ubuntu pocket guide and found nothing on the topic in it either.I can get online (via dial-up) on my XP machine, and also have USB storage sticks.
I need to know if there is any dial up accelerators for Ubuntu. The ISP I need them for is Localnet.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using an external Huawei CDMA fixed wireless terminal (phone + dial-up modem). It connects to my PC via a USB port. Actually my PC recognizes it (after driver installation) as "TIUMP Serial Port". I guess the driver is a kind of USB adapter for a serial port.
I can't get it to work in ubuntu 9.10. I ran wvdial (after installing dependencies and wvdial package) and it doesn't recognize my device as a modem. Is there any solution to this problem? Without solving it, I won't be able to go online from ubuntu.
He's on dial-up so getting updates and installing packages such as restricted extras would be painful. I'm thinking Mint but have little personal experience with distros beyond Ubuntu.

I've run the command "sudo apt-get update" from terminal, showing no update to do.Then I've run the update manager (System-Administration-Update Manager) and it has shown an update (adobe flash).I thought that "apt-get update" command and update manager were the same... I allready changed the settings from regular to LTS, but nothing changes. There are updates to the kernel, but I cannot download them, so I'm kinda stuck here.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 on my Toshiba 32-bit laptop without any problems.Since the upgrade I am starting to have troubles on this machine. Most others are 64-bit and bar an Evolution issue are fine.In this case, 24 hours after the upgrade the machine wanted to do an Update. It would not allow the update until I fixed some broken packages which I did via Synaptics Package Manager. I then Marked All Upgrades and did the update from there.It was fine until I shut down and tried to log in again.I got the Blue Screen of Death!!!!!! I thought only Windows had this!Anyway, I could not log in. The auto login was not working so I used Other which gave me Recovery, entered my UN and PW, and I got the error message:

I recently finally got around to installing Maverick Meerkat on a different drive. The 64-bit version. I see that I need the 64-bit version of the modem software, and I haven't found it right away. Where can I get it? The programs required under 32-bit Karmic Koala:
libwvstreams4.6-base
libwvstreams4.6-extras
libuniconf4.6
wvdial
All of these had .deb filename extensions. Also, largely because I only have a slow dial-up connection, I don't have any updates for either Karmic Koala or Maverick Meerkat installed. If you happen to know that I absolutely need some particular update(s)
