OpenSUSE :: Sound Using Multiple Accounts

Mar 1, 2010

I've switched off the borg at home 100% (yippee). Wife and kids are now logging on, firing up 2-3 apps (usually FF, songbird and nautilus) and then switching users to allow the other on. This has the unexpected side effect of locking the audio device so the other user cannot use it until they shutdown those apps that have /dev/dsp open in a locked fashion. Is this "normal" behaviour? or is there something I'm missing in the setup?

Ubuntu :: Mail Sync Between Multiple PCs With 8 Accounts

Jul 15, 2010

I've recently purchased a laptop so I've been focusing on getting my data synchronized between my laptop and PC. The problem is as follows, I have 8+ email accounts and I prefer to have them all in 1 single map tree instead of a separate tree for every one of them. This means IMAP is out of the question, so I've been thinking about a few things but I'm not too sure if there's anything out there for some of these things.

Option 1 - Unison Synchronization
Using Unison to synchronize the Thunderbird profiles, problem is Thunderbird can't be running on both machines

Option 2 - IMAP mail hub for all accounts
Somehow turn my server into a mail hub that gets email for all my accounts, and serve them through IMAP somehow, only problem that might be is that reply-to won't send a mail back with the same mail address people mailed to (Don't know that for sure).

Option 3 - POP3 mail hub
Same as option 2 but with a central POP3 hub that will keep all mails forever, should be doable.

Not viable option - Turn off mail deletion on server. This ain't viable because this will either cause some of the mail servers to clog up, especially if I were to only turn deletion on on 1 pc. So it seems the POP3 hub is best, and then just let that delete everything off of the remote servers, is this possible, I've tried setting up a mail daemon before but failed miserably (But will try again if it will make this possible).

Software :: PHP Imap Client Which Supports Multiple Accounts?

Nov 23, 2010

I am looking for a PHP based IMPA client with these requirements:

- User accounts (not same as imap email accounts)

- Each user can add multiple IMAP emails to his account and check/use them.

Is there any solution for my requirements. I checked Squirrelmail and roundcube but I am not sure they can do this.

Otherwise I will need to either develop a system from scratch or modify an existing one to do my job. I hesitate to develop myself as it will take months if not years to make it stable and bug free.

Ubuntu :: Sharing Gnome Password Manager Between Multiple Accounts

May 17, 2010

I use gnome password manager. It stores encrypted passwords in the ~/.gpass directory.I have 2 users, johnny, and audio. My default gpass setup is at /home/johnny/.gpass I've created a group called gpassusers and added johnny and audio. I chgrp'd /home/johnny/.gpass to gpassusers. I chmod'd /home/johnny/.gpass 770 (to give group access) I then created a symlink as follows

Code:

ln -s /home/johnny/.gpass /home/audio/.gpass

when I try to cd into /home/audio/.gpass I get

Code:

audio@picard:~$ cd .gpass
bash: cd: .gpass: Permission denied

for sanity's sake, here's the ls of johnny's home directory

Code:

drwxrwx--- 2 johnny gpassusers 4096 2010-05-17 19:34 .gpass

and here's the ls of audio's home directory

Code:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 audio audio 19 2010-05-17 19:34 .gpass -> /home/johnny/.gpass

and just to verify groups are set up properly

Code:

Ubuntu Networking :: Login Multiple Ftp Accounts On Same Its Server Using Nautilus?

Jun 5, 2010

I googled a lot but I didn't find anything about this. I have multiple accounts on the same ftp server (the server is not mine I don't access its configuration)

If I write ftp://hostname on the location bar it lets me login, but only allow me to be in only one account at a time. Putting ftp://hostname on the location again just opens the account I logged into and I'm unable to login to the other account to move files between them conveniently.

Is it possible to log into multiple accounts on the same server?

Ubuntu Networking :: Mounting Samba Shares On A Box With Multiple User Accounts?

Jul 29, 2010

I setup samba file sharing to auto mount in fstab. Everything works great except when a computer has more than on user account.

The folders in mnt are owned by root and ownership changes to the first user account no matter what user logs in. So only the first user can edit files in the mounted share.

Anyone got a clue why this is happening? Seems the mount folders should be changing ownership to the user that is logged in.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Multiple Sound Apps In ALSA?

Feb 3, 2010

I have stated that I use Pulse because ALSA fails to utilize more then one sound app. With ALSA if I watch a ..... vid in firerfox and soon open my music player the music player wont work unless I close off firefox. so I close off firefox but sometimes flash hangs the sound device hostage and I have to log out or kill something to make sure ALSA is freed up. So this is why I use pulse, it makes using more then one sound app at a time much easier, no hang ups at all. But there are a few apps that dont get along with pulse so there must be a way to configure alsa to use more then one sound app at a time. Do I have some compiling to do? Is it commandline? I am just curious what you anti pulse folks do to use more then one sound app at a time without the aid of pulse. it only mumbles about the differences between the multiple sound servers.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 No Sound On Select Accounts?

Jul 28, 2011

I have two user accounts. "xubuntu", an admin, and "theseconduser", with regular desktop permissions

Neither of them are in the group "audio"

I auto-log into my admin account and no sound is present. I try various solutions found through google (listed below) and through troubleshooting find "theseconduser", another account, being able to to use sound.

I've tried the switch from pulseaudio to alsa; it made both accounts unable to use the sound card, so I reverted

I haven't included any CLI output here since I'm not exactly sure what to post / whether I should post it. Feel free to ask away.

I'm able to alter settings etc through Mixer; I have 4 available options in the "Sound card" dropdown there.

how to get sound back into this account!

OpenSUSE Install :: Unlocking LDAP Accounts Using Passwd?

Jul 18, 2011

I'm trying to setup a LDAP server and it seems to have all gone pretty well. I set it so that users that type their passwords wrong 5 times are locked out for 20 minutes. That works fine, but if I want to log on as an admin and unlock their account before that 20 minutes is up it isn't working.Normally, (authenticating locally)

Code:

passwd -u blank888

works and does what I want it to. If I want passwd to recognize the LDAP server I use

Code:

passwd -D cn=Administrator,dc=example,dc=com -u blank888

When I run that, it always asks for the admin password like it should, but then will only work on some accounts and not others. Mainly I've seen that it only works on accounts that already had local accounts before connecting to the LDAP server. If I run a passwd -Sa command I will get something like:

blank888 LK 07/18/2011 0 999 7 -1
blank888 LK 07/18/2011 0 999 7 -1
test LK

blank888 already had an account on the machine, but also had a LDAP account along with test. So blank888 is showing twice because he has both LDAP and local accounts, whereas test only has a LDAP account. So now if they both get locked out passwd -D $adminDN -u $account will work for blank888 but not test. Then the results of a passwd -Sa would be:

blank888 PS 07/18/2011 0 999 7 -1
blank888 PS 07/18/2011 0 999 7 -1
test LK

I need to be able to unlock test using passwd. The LDAP server is running 11.2, and the hosts are running various Linux distros, and XP.Can anything think of a way to fix this without removing the LDAP server, adding local accounts for everyone, and then putting the LDAP server back on?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Sound With New Sound Card - Web Browser Is Unable To Play Any Sound

Mar 24, 2010

After installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing, zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.

I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound From Multiple Users On Same Box?

Feb 3, 2010

Ok, for various (mostly security) reasons I was experimenting in running certain apps as a different user id (on Karmic).

I can get X to forward to my main session without a problem but I cannot get the sound to work. Sound works fine in my main session, but when I run sound as another user I get plenty of errors like:

PHP Code:

ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1008:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave

I am not a big linux GUI person, so I have rarely dealt with sound systems under Linux. What is the simplest way to get this to work in a relatively secure way? (I do realize that my security is already a bit compromised by allowing the secondary user access to X, but that can't be helped)

Ubuntu Multimedia :: One Sound Card For Multiple / Simultaneous Uses

Nov 5, 2010

I work for a company that uses Ubuntu exclusively. Without going too much into detail, we need a single sound-card to do up to 3 things at one time. What I mean by this, basically, is that there needs to be 3 instances listening to a card's line-in port at any one time. For example (these are made-up), Audacity listening to the line-in jack and making a recording of what it hears, a custom script that streams the input to the internet, and a third instance that listens to this input and runs different scripts based on what it hears.

Currently, our company sends out machines with 3 sound cards to do this. One card for each job. Of course, we'd like to save money and only send out one. Whenever we try to set all 3 programs to run off of one card, they error out and say something along the lines of "device already in use". Is there a way to go around this? If so, how? We use the command-line version of Ubuntu 8.04. It is NOT x64. The hardware may vary a bit, but is for the most part, consistent. (We order in batches of 50.)

Slackware :: Proper Way To Manage Multiple Sound Devices?

May 4, 2011

On my desktop computer (now running the very impressive Slackware64 13.37 and generic kernel), I've got what Alsa considers 4 different sound devices:

Logitech USB headset
Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 with built-in microphone
ATI HD48x0 audio (which uses the HDA-Intel driver) on my graphics card
Intel 82801JI audio (also using HDA-Intel driver) on my motherboard

When I run alsaconf, it picks up the ATI audio only (which is fine). Later running alsamixer (or any other mixer) all 4 are visible. The issue is that I really would like the ATI audo to be in position 0. Previous to Slackware 13.37, setting up the device positions in /etc/modprobe.d/sound usually did the trick. However, that is now being ignored and one the USB devices are being put in position 0 regardless of what is in sound.conf. This is driving me nuts as a lot of software simply use the default audio device, which I would like to be my speakers, but is now my USB headset.

All of the googling I've done points towards messing with the /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf file, but as I said, that is being ignored. Is there a more 13.37 way to have ALSA order the audio devices the way I want?

Programming :: Play Multiple Sound Streams On ALSA Dmix?

Jul 31, 2010

I'm having trouble getting ALSA to play multiple sound streams (multiple sounds at once). My code is running on an embedded ARM board using a AC97 sound. It will only play one without any mixing, I have to use pure ALSA as higher sound mixers are a nightmare to cross compile for ARM. I've tested my system with aplay for example

aplay -D plughw:0,1 bang.wav

works fine. So I tried dmix with

aplay -D plug:dmix Win.wav

That gave the following error

ALSA lib pcm_direct.c:1587snd_pcm_direct_parse_open_conf) The field ipc_gid must be a valid group (create group audio)
aplay: main:550: audio open error: Invalid argument

I checked asound with

/etc # cat asound.conf
pcm.EP93XX {
type hw

[code]....

Does this mean dmix will not work? Is there someway with the above setup I can play multiple sounds? I have to use the vendor ALSA build (so can't update ALSA), I can change the .confs however. Also because I'm cross compiling things like pulseaudio SDL are very difficult to get working, so I basically need to use the above ALSA. Is there anyway I can find if dmix exists on the system?

Should add aplay -L does show dmix ?

spdif 'cards.pcm.iec958'
