I have a logitech usb webcam on Opensuse 11.4/Gnome, and problems with skype. I managed to put the sound, but the video is not working. It is working although on Kopete (I installed it for the test).
View 9 RepliesI have a fresh install of openSUSE 11.4 with KDE. This includes ALSA and Pulseaudio.
I have a mic and speakers and a webcam. As far as I can see microphone and sound reproduction work, the webcam also works:
- I can arecord and aplay
- KMix works
- amixer and alsamixer work (I am using microphone boost)
- test sounds play
- the webcam works in "Personal Settings (Configure Desktop)": Hardware > Multimedia > Phonon (test camera)
- Pidgin and Empathy work with sound and video.
(had to set this: gconftool-2 --set --type=string /system/gstreamer/0.10/default/audiosrc pulsesrc,
without this setting it was set to alsasrc by default and Pidgin and Empathy didn't work).
I installed Skype 2.2 (also tried 2.1) and tested the video camera in Skype. Result: doesn't work.
I made a test call: I hear the voice of the lady answering the call, but my own voice is not recorded.
In Skype everything is set to use Pulseaudio.
I am at a total loss to understand what is going wrong here. Why does Skype not work, when everything else does??
I made this observation:
When an application records something, a "Capture stream" shows up in the KMix "Capture Streams" tab. For example, when I use arecord, "ALSA capture" shows up, while I record. When I make a call on Empathy, a capture stream shows up in the said tab.
When I make a Skype call, NO capture stream shows up, so obviously Skype is not capturing anything.
I have an issue with Skype video similar to this thread [URL] where the test video doesn't work and I only see a white screen from my own webcam. The receivers can see my video and I can see their video, however. Video from my webcam works fine in Cheese and Guvcview. It seemed to start after I loaded the Compiz-config-settings-manager in an effort to fix video tearing (didn't work). Also Kdenlive now crashes every time I try to run a clip, but it was working great before. Even if I remove CompizConfig I still have the problem.

View 6 Replies View Relatedi just fixed my old-ish laptop (pop accident) and instead of putting window on it my dad talked me into trying ubuntu out, gotta say love it, fast and everything but having major problems. i have a lenovo 3000 v200. everything is the same as out of the box except the keyboard, only thing i really needed to replace.
ok problems
1) wireless is not working: i have the switch on (side of the laptop) and bluetooth lights up but wireless doesnt. (Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG). now i just learned about 'rfkill list' it shows that there is a soft block on the wireless. tried " rfkill unblock 0" nothing happened. also when i tried finding out wat kernel im using " uname-r" to find out more on why its not unblocking, the CLI says "comand isnt found" next two problems are small but are still frustrating
2) built in camera: the green light is on next to the lens but when trying to test the camera on skype or a photo program the video feed/ picture is black, or blank. not sure what i can do to fix that.
3) fingerprint scanner: yes i have one, i know its not efficient but I still like using it to login in instead of typing. im not sure how to get linux/ubuntu to recognize it if it even is. not sure how to set it up if it is recognized.
i would like to fix the wireless more than anything, if i can fix the camera and scanner then yeay, otherwise i can survive. oh and note i did try using the "additional drivers" app. nothing popped up.
I am looking for a good alternative to Skype. I would like to have video and voice calls with a family member who uses MS XP but would like to avoid Skype if possible. Does anyone know of a good client with good video and voice quality that will work on both platforms. I'd like it to use open standards so at least we can use different OS specific clients if one is not available for both platforms. Googling hasn't yielded much and some of the results refer to really old (~2006) articles or apps. I hope I'm not doomed to using Skype. I've resisted so long with using SIP clients for voice but am stumped now that I want to include video.

I have just completed a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 and installed Skype 2.2.0.25 from the Ubuntu Software Center. When I go to Options > Video Devices > Test, the camera doesn't display a picture. It is also not working during a call.
The webcam is a Creative Webcam Live! and it shows up in the Skype video device screen as WebCam Live! (/dev/video0).
I installed Cheese Webcam Booth and the webcam works perfectly. Again it shows up as WebCam Live! (/dev/video0) so I guess everything is ok and must be a problem with Skype?
Any ideas how I can get the camera working in Skype?
I have been an OpenSuse 11.2 user since the past 8 months. Recently I had a issue with the operating system and therefore had to re-install the OS again. However, since the fresh install, I have not been able to capture any sound from my laptop's microphone. This is weird because it used to work fine with OpenSuse 11.2 before I had to re-install the same OS again. Additionally I can assure that there are no issues with the hardware since it works fine with Windows 7. I have tried almost everything, but in vain.

The sound works, and the correct device (Logitech Quickcam Communicate STX) is selected in skype, but when I click on "Test" in the video box in Skype, nothing happens. all my hardware seems to be working fine.
i installed the drivers for my nvidia video card, and 3d is working along with kde's desktop effects.
i installed all my favourite firefox extensions including video downloadhelper downloadhelper - media download firefox extension an extension that can download videos from videos and other video sites.
all of my installed firefox extensions seem to be working except video downloadhelper.
when i try to download videos with it nothing happens.
previously i had opensuse 11.2 gnome 64 bit installed on my laptop, and the video downloadhelper extension worked fine.
i think this problem might have something to do with the way opensuse integrates firefox with kde.
after the upgrade to firefox 3.5.9 yesterday, video from my internet camera doesn't appear. Firefox loads the web page from the camera, but the box in the web page containing the video stream doesn't show up.my system is opensuse 11.1, 64-bit. I temporarily downgraded to firefox 3.0.18 and the video worked as usual. By shutting off plugins, I found it was the IcedTea Java web browser plugin 1.6.2 that was driving the video. so I upgraded back to firefox 3.5.9, started looking for an upgraded version of the Java plugin, but the software manager shows that the latest is java-1_6_0-openjdk-plugin (1.6.2_b16-0.1.1 x86_64) and that it is already installed.

I was using skype to make video calls from my windows machine to my home to contact my parents...who use another windows machine..without any problems for the last one month.
I switched to ubuntu just yesterday and installed skype..
Talking over to them was a pain...the line was full of disturbances and the
video was only one way though I recieved calls and could see them they could not see me
I am using Ubuntu 9.10 and have a Creative Web Cam Live. I installed Cheese first to test my web cam and it works fine but skype has a problem with it. Windows is dead and the Penguin rules!

Today for some reason none of my avi files are able to play. When I try a DVD there is also no play back of the video. Sound is working but video is not there. I have tried Kaffeine, VLC, SM Player. All no luck.

Recently audio stopped working in my flash video, when browsing in Chrome or Firefox, video is ok, but no audio. I don't know when did it stop to work. My system is SUSE 11.3 with all software up-to-date.

Okay, so I have Skype installed, and it has worked fine in the past. I have been able to chat with my girlfriend on it. We can see each other and both talk. I haven't used it in probably 3 or 4 months. I tried to use it last night and for some reason, I could not see her on the video. It would just show up as a white box where the video should be. She could see me, and we could hear each other. I already had her test with somebody else to check if her video output was okay, and it worked just fine.
I read something that Cairo Dock could somehow be affecting it, but I haven't tested this theory. I can't see how the two could be related.

I am trying to use the video calls with skype. The person can see me but I cant see them or myself on the video call box. I have tried the download version from skype and inside my ubuntu software center and each had the same problem.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a macbook 2.1 and successfully installedubuntu 10.04 with no problems other than the headphone jac doesn't work and the iSight i had to follow instructions to make it work..however, I cannot use it in skype. It works with cheese and ekiga, but most of the people I chat with are on skype. The driver on skype says "built-in iSight (v4l2) whereas the skype says "built-in iSight (/dev/video0) when I go into the gstreamer-properties, for video it is selected as V4L2 and in the pipeline it reads (v4l2src device="/dev/video0")
When I click test it all works fine, its just that skype doesn't work with the camera. shows I have one, I click test in skype settings and the screen stays black and the green light showing its on turns on....and when I'm in a call i try to make it work and it flashes the green light and doesnt work at all... anyone know a solution or haing the same problem?
