Debian Configuration :: Video Cams For Skype
Nov 24, 2010
I would like to buy a video camera to use for skype video calls. It should be reasonably priced and above all work both under Debian and Ubuntu with minimal effort (ideally a plug and play) and...it would be nice if I could buy it from Amazon .

I have installed Debian 8.0.0 64bit with KDE 4.14.2.I managed to install Skype. But the video call didn't work. Actually when I'm receiving a video call it works, but I cannot initiate a video call. Then I installed libv4l-0 package (which has been installed to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l) and found here URL...) that I have to do something with this Code: Select allLD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /usr/bin/skype in order to make video calling work. I went thought some results on google but I couldn't find any hint. Probably it's very simple to do with this I cannot get.

I am trying to get Skype working, the only problem is the webcam, in the test video all I get is a black screen.
After some research I found this command to get Skype to work with my webcam, as you can see there are a few errors.
Below is a listing of of /usr/lib/libv4l/ directory
Other than the video, eveything seems to be working.
This is on Skype 2.2, Skype 2.1 was the same. webcam works fine.

I did a fresh install of Debian Jessie and I have problem booting up with video. I have to boot with "nomodeset" argument or else the boot sequence bugs, and I see a straight line of funky little color squares on the screen. And it boots with nomodeset.
lsmod do lists "nouveau".
So I don't get what's wrong. I have a Nvidia Geforce GT 750M 2gb (Lenovo y400 notebook). My graphic card is listed in the supported hardware of "nouveau"
I remember having a very similar problem on Ubuntu and installing the proprietary driver solved it. So maybe my hardware isnt supported by nouveau? But I would prefer to use an open-source driver than the prorietary.
Here is the kernel log: (I pasted only the lines which contains "nouveau")

I have been using Lenny for about a year now, but for some reason Xine has suddenly stopped playing mkv files. It plays everything else including flash. I only started using xine because the mkv files for some reason suffer from a lag between the video and audio in mplayer. I tried installing banshee and vlc but neither of them show video. So I was left with only Xine and it worked perfectly then it suddenly stops playing mkv. Is there something I need to install or remove, reconfigure? Do I just delete the Xine config folder in my home-folder? Lenny being what it is I can only install what is on the out-dated Lenny repos trying anything else like the unstable releases simply wants to uninstall my entire system.
My machine specs are:
Acer Aspire 8930
Intel Centrino 2
NVidia geforce 9600m GS 512mb
RAM 4GB
I have the proprietary nVidia graphics drivers installed. So it is powerful enough.

I've been using an old Logitech Quickcam Express with the qc-usb drivers for years. It functions fairly well on older kernels with the patches that became available. Works on a Slackware 11 box with a 2.6.15.1 kernel, but I can't get the driver to compile on newer kernels, and I don't want to spend days trying to find patches that may or may not work.
I'd like to get a cam that I can use without too much difficulty on a Slackware64 13.1 box with a >2.6.36 kernel.

I am running Debian 7.0 Wheezy amd64...I installed Debian's nvidia driver earlier but I was having a few issues with OpenGL. My laptop has a dual boot Debian + Ubuntu installation.
In particular I am using Debian 8.0 with stock kernel 3.16.0-4 (or equally 4.1.10 custom compiled, I tested it and it does not make any difference for the subject of this post).
Ubuntu is 14.10, with stock kernel 3.19.0-15.
In both installations I have nvidia nouveau drivers and intel integrated graphics drivers installed and loaded. This is the default for both installations.
In both installations I have xorg automatically configured (no xorg.conf file present in /etc/X11). In both systems the content of /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d is the same for what moitors are concerned (differences in mice and trackpad entries).
Unfortunately, the video configuration in Ubuntu 14.10 works out of the box. In particular I can plug in an external monitor/projector and it will fire-up the nvidia card (nouveau drivers) to power that monitor.
Debian 8.0 on the other hand does not even detect the external monitor.
I don't know where to start to solve the problems.
The hardware is as follows: the laptop (lenovo W530) features both an Intel integrated graphics card and an Nvidia K1000M. The VGA port is connected only to the Nvidia card (this is according to my online research, as I don't know how to check this).

Recently, I installed VVVVVV and discovered that when attempting to use fullscreen mode, the monitor displays "video mode not supported" for 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, and auto. After googling around for an hour or two (and only finding stuff from 2008-09) I have created a new xorg.conf from Xorg -configure and nvidia-xconfig. This doesn't seem to have had anyeffect.DebianRelease unstable (sid)Kernel Linux 3.0.0-1-amd64GNOME 3.0.2GeForce 7600 GSMonitor: Hyundai Imagequest

My boss has put in many IP cameras around the building. I recently saw one near the bathroom. He is kinda creepy and I wouldn't put it past him to put one IN the bathroom. He was recently talking about power outlet cameras too. Is there a linux program I can use to detect cameras on the network and see what they see? Like vlc maybe? How would I do it?

I can't get video to work in Skype on Maverick. The sound works, and the correct device (Logitech Quickcam Communicate STX) is selected in skype, but when I click on "Test" in the video box in Skype, nothing happens. My webcam works fine with Cheese, just not in Skype. My computer is a desktop Gateway DX4820.

I can not see incoming video on Skype.
Okay, so I have Skype installed, and it has worked fine in the past. I have been able to chat with my girlfriend on it. We can see each other and both talk. I haven't used it in probably 3 or 4 months. I tried to use it last night and for some reason, I could not see her on the video. It would just show up as a white box where the video should be. She could see me, and we could hear each other. I already had her test with somebody else to check if her video output was okay, and it worked just fine.
I read something that Cairo Dock could somehow be affecting it, but I haven't tested this theory. I can't see how the two could be related.

I have a macbook 2.1 and successfully installedubuntu 10.04 with no problems other than the headphone jac doesn't work and the iSight i had to follow instructions to make it work..however, I cannot use it in skype. It works with cheese and ekiga, but most of the people I chat with are on skype. The driver on skype says "built-in iSight (v4l2) whereas the skype says "built-in iSight (/dev/video0) when I go into the gstreamer-properties, for video it is selected as V4L2 and in the pipeline it reads (v4l2src device="/dev/video0")
When I click test it all works fine, its just that skype doesn't work with the camera. shows I have one, I click test in skype settings and the screen stays black and the green light showing its on turns on....and when I'm in a call i try to make it work and it flashes the green light and doesnt work at all... anyone know a solution or haing the same problem?

Have NO video camera. Trying to receive SKYPE video using Fedora 11 & SKYPE Beta Version 2.1.0.81 [latest version].When I receive a video call the image appears and then freezes and dumps the call after about six seconds.I have tried the 'env LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so /usr/bin/skype' launch, but it makes no difference in the bug.I have NOT heard that a camera is required to receive video. Is there a fix for this?nal information: Here is the error message I get when the call dumps and crashes SKYPE.

I'm running Fedora 15 64-bit on my laptop, an HP HDX. I installed skype and got flash video to work (the former required that I install some 32 bit libraries, the latter required that I install an experimental 64-bit flash plugin from a tar ball). Now, they both work fine, but they don't work at the same time. In other words, I can have a video/audio chat, or just an audio chat, with someone on skype, but during that chat, I cannot view flash videos, nor can I watch a movie (and I verified that the problem is not just with totem) at the same time. If I'm watching a movie or listening to audio, skype will refuse to make a call.
Furthermore, when I have the sound settings open, and I'm using skype, in the applications tab of the sound settings I get "No application is currently playing or recording audio" which seems highly suspicious. I know this is a fixable problem because skype 64 + flash and/or movies works fine in the most recent iteration of 64bit ubuntu on my laptop, so it is just a matter of settings. I can't find much in the way of pulseaudio or alsa management apps in any of the repositories.
