OpenSUSE Network :: Sshd Not Starting On Reboot?

Oct 6, 2010

I have an openSUSE 11.1 and I noticed that after installing a couple of things on it the sshd is not starting anymore on reboot. how can I debug this problem. Is there a log file so that I can see what was the problem? If I want to use ssh I have to start it from yast every time the computer restarts.

OpenSUSE Network :: Sshd Not Starting On Boot?

May 21, 2011

Running 11.4 x64, I've tried everything I can think of (which is not saying a lot) but I can't get sshd started on boot. Running /etc/init.d/sshd starts the service manually with no problem but I really need it started on boot.

I can't find anything different when comparing this instance with other similar instances where sshd does start but this instance is an update from 11.3 where sshd was not enabled and the others are all clean installs where sshd was enabled during installation, if that makes any difference.

OpenSUSE Network :: Network Not Properly Starting On Bootup ?

Sep 14, 2009

Recently after upgrading my kernel (via /repositories/Base:/Kernel/standard) I have had issues with the network not starting properly on bootup. The kernel is 100% SUSE-patched and behaves perfectly outside of that one issue. To get the network to "start" (DHCP issued, eth0 brought up) I have to 'rcnetwork start' in a shell. I've checked to make sure my config is right in both ifcfg-eth0 and 'config' for /etc/sysconfig/network, but nothing affects the outcome.

How do I get the boot scripts to bring up eth0 and issue a DHCP on startup?

Here's the output of 'rcnetwork start -o debug fake':

OpenSUSE Network :: Apache Not Starting On Runlevel?

Apache is set to start on runlevel 2, 3 and 5, just like MySQL. For some obscure reason this always fails. I tried resetting the runlevels, but this did not help and I always have to start apache manually after reboot.

How can I analyze this problem? In the Apache logs I don't find the cause. Is there an other log I can check?

OpenSUSE Network :: Nfs No Longer Starting Automatically With Wifi?

Jul 27, 2010

Running openSuse 11.2-64 on a DualCore / 2Gb machine.I have 3 nfs shares described in my /etc/fstabAll three were mounted at boot time when I was connecting to the network through the wired interface (eth0).I need to use the wireless interface, and even if that interface is up and running well (I use ifup), the nfs client doesn't start... if just after boot I do a mount -a or simply a nfs start, everything comes up and runs well. This machine will not be used by myself, and the users cannot just jump into a command line and type nfs start or even mount -a (they would need su privileges...)I have disabled the eth0, killed the eth0 config (with yast) edited /etc/sysconfig/nfs and setted the NFS_START_SERVICE to yes to force the gssd and idmapd to always start even if there was no nfs entry in fstab, but nothing changed.

OpenSUSE Network :: Samba Does Not Work After Reboot

Jun 26, 2011

I am trying to have accessible computer by its network name (same as hostname) by ping and Samba client from other computers and one directory shared on my laptop. I simple, trivial wish I hope. Nothing extravagant. Something what every Windows user has out-of-the box, just to select a shared directory. However I struggle hard to do the same with linux. Sharing directory with samba is relatively easy, the issues I have is with my laptop network name. It is not recognized/propagated to the local network.

I cannot rely on static data in /etc/hosts. This is a laptop not a server, I move it between different networks. To achieve propagation of my network name (hostname) dynamically, so everyone in the local network can at least ping me, I was advised to use winbind (winbindd), that is to rely on MS NetBios technology There is no native linux technology to achieve this? shame! what about plain/dynamic DNS? why it is not my network name not propagated to my local DNS server/wifi/rooter?

To do that I was advised to do:
- run winbind service (winbindd daemon)
- run samba service (umm, not sure if this is necessary for network name propagation, but I also want to share data so lets keep it as an essential).
- add "wins" to /etc/nsswitch.conf to "hosts" section

Well, it seems to work on my other two computers with Ubuntu and Mandriva well. But not on Suse. Well, not completely, not permanently. It magically start working when I call "Yast -> Samba Configuration". No change here (everything is already set: Domain Name, Not a DC, Netbios Hostname, Wins server support=yes, use Wins for Hostname Resolution) just hit OK. It runs SOMETHING in the background (some scripts) for a few seconds. And then abrakadabra, everything is fine, my network name is recognized, everyone can use my samba exposed directory, smb4k sees me in the Network Neighborhood.

BUT when I restart, I am "back in square one". Pinging my name does not work, smb4k does not see me, or cannot find me even by IP! Samba sharing works by using direct IP. Not all clients support connecting by IP notably not smb4k. To use Samba properly you have to sort out network name visibility fist. I would like to make "Yast -> Samba Configuration" achievements somewhat more PERMANENT.

What exactly runs when I hit OK? No new server/daemon was started. I checked PS, nothing with newer PID appeared. And samba and winbind are started on boot, they were running indeed. No change in configuration was made. I checked all changes made in /etc - but none found! Where is winbind configuration? smb.conf? Do I need to run wins server/client, another daemon?

Ubuntu Servers :: SSH Not Starting On Reboot

Nov 29, 2010

I have set up a new IP specifically for SSH and configured SSHD_Config accordingly to listen on this new interface and a specific port. However when I reboot SSH is not starting. Looking in the syslog it shows that it is unable to start. It looks like its trying to listen on the interface before it is set up.

Code:
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh main process (601) terminated with status 255
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh main process ended, respawning
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh main process (610) terminated with status 255
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh main process ended, respawning
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh main process (618) terminated with status 255
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh respawning too fast, stopped

I am able to start SSH manually once the server is booted. Do I need to set up my interfaces differently to ensure they are available prior to SSH starting somehow? I don't want to change my ssh config to listen on all addresses.

OpenSUSE Network :: IPv6 Getting A Global Address Takes A Long Time - Possibly Only After Starting A KDE Session

Jul 8, 2011

My ISP offers the service of native IPv6. So my ADSL router provides me with a local and global IPv6 address. However after a reboot it takes minutes to finally see the global address when using "ifconfog eth0". During that time I can't do a ping6 to an external server, which seems logical. So I waited several minutes, but no global address. After that I started a KDE session, went back to the console(<Ctrl>+<Alt>+F1) and now the global address was there. Is this normal behavior or should I file bug report?

Ubuntu Servers :: Apache No Longer Starting Unattended After Reboot?

Nov 18, 2010

I have an Ubuntu 10.04.1 AMD64 server running Apache with SSL. In the past, even though I have a passphrase on my key file, I have only needed it if I manually restarted Apache2, never after reboot.

I recently switched from a self-signed cert to one from a CA. I'm not sure if this is what caused it, I also installed a few packages (AWStats, PHPSysInfo and Munin) that all interact with the webserver.

Anyway, I just noticed that now after a reboot Apache starts but doesn't work. I need to kill that process and start a new one with the passphrase (maybe on the console it is prompting me, I mainly use SSH access since the server is headless).

Why did Ubuntu used to 'remember' the passphrase on the self-signed cert but now I need to provide it?

My sever auto-updates so it would be annoying to have this thing go down regularly after a patch that requires a reboot.

OpenSUSE Install :: Sshd Segfaults During Pam Auth After Upgrade From 11.1 To 11.3?

Oct 6, 2010

I'm testing upgrading from 11.1 to 11.3 and running into a major roadblock. When I try to ssh to the server after upgrading, I am unable to use password or pubkey auth to connect via ssh with my ldap user due to sshd segfault. I can however connect via pubkey to a local account on the system. Both auth methods work (for local users) when I disable UsePAM in sshd_config, but auth via ldap is required. My configuration works fine on fully patched installs of both 11.1 and 11.3, but not a fully patched 11.1 upgraded to 11.3. I've been at this for a while now trying various things but don't seem to be making much progress..

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.4 Insists In Starting X - Stopped With Message On Tty1 "Starting YaST2"

Jul 18, 2011

I installed OS11.4 on my old laptop, Compaq Armada E500., 512MB RAM, ATI Rage Mobility. During installation I chose "minimal server" and added some development packages, lxde and a little more. I chose to start in runlevel 3 which is full networking without X. Still, when computer is booted it tries to start Xorg which doesn't work because of some problem w driver. The start-up seems to stop there, it never loads completely - seems most things in runlevel 3 are not started (see below) I can manually login on laptop and fix it - but never permanently, same thing again after reboot.

I have checked /etc/inittab & yast - both states default runlevel is 3. I have checked services to be started both directly, browsing directory /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/, and with YaST, it is very clear X should not load during boot. But, as said, it does.. I don't really care about the driver problem right now, I can fix that later when I have more time. So how do I stop X from getting started automatically?

More info, if needed: The installation also stopped with message on tty1 "Starting YaST2" and tty8 showing errors with graphics driver (mach64). The system seemed to be installed though, so I simply rebooted (issuing "reboot" from tty2).

[Code]....

I'm not completely sure where it stops, network is configured but keyboard is wrong and mysql & everything after is not started, so somewhere between S02network and S06kbd. I'm going to use it as a server for testing purposes so no X is actually needed - however I do want to have X & lxde installed just in case, my Internet connection at home is terribly slow so I need most things I might need in the future installed today.
