On my Windows XP machine, I can see the Ubuntu directory and can access files on it. I just can't access the Windows workgroup from Ubuntu.

Feb 22, 2010I have two types of OS in my network windows (XP,7) and linux (debian 5.03, ubuntu 9.10 8.04, fedora 8) all of linux can see an reach the windows shared folders but windows can not reach linux shared folders what can I do fo fixing this problem what should I follow. I have to say I disabled all of windows firewalls; and all linuxs can reach each other shared folders. (My network is Workgroup not domain).

Oct 29, 2010I have an OpenSuSe Server configured with DNS, Samba (PDC + WINS), LDAP, Squid All this is in a hybrid scenario with other OpenSuse acting as clients and some Windows 7 also as clients. Everything works perfect. Both systems are able to join and authenticate in the Samba server very smoothly.
My problem is that in my workspace I have several different subnets/VLANS. So I have another OpenSuSe client here that needs to join the domain and authenticate with the samba server, but he just cant find it via the Windows Domain Membership setup screen (where I usually configure the others).
The server can pe pinged, and it does resolv local domain names. It seems the problem is that I have no place to configure a PDC/WINS server in Linux Client. It only asks me for the domain to join, and then it doesnt find it (Im guessing this happens because it cant receive the broadcasts from the server network).
Is there any way to declare the Samba/PDC/WINS server on the client side?

Dec 30, 2010I have a home network with Ubuntu (3 PC) Windows (XP 3, 7 1 vista 1) and Lacie networked drive. I have successfully edited fstab to mount the lacie drive at startup on my main ubuntu PC and it works a treat. My problem is setting up the Unbutu PCs to browse the workgroup. This was working but now (since my last update of Unbutu I think) I get prompted for a password and no matter what I do it does not let me browse.
Now I have read a few things on Samba and do not have the time or ability to become a network engineer. All I want to do is is have on my Ubuntu the same browsing ability that seems to come out of the box in Windows.

OpenSUSE Network :: Windows 7 And Windows LiveID Sign-In Assistant Working With SAMBA?
Dec 10, 2010I have 3 computers. One running openSuse 11.3 with SAMBA and the other 2 are Windows 7 Professional boxes. I have the same user name and passwords for all three boxes.
From the Linux box I can access one of the Windows 7 boxes but the other won't accept my user name and password. The one that won't accept has Windows LiveID Sign-In Assistant installed. Apparantly that's an automatic install now.
I've read that there is a bug with the SAMBA libsmbclient [URL].
I tried updating via YAST but still end up with version 3.5.4-5.1.2 and this doesn't work.

In the Windows network, there are 2 or more shares as follows:
I can access both shares in nautilus e.g. "smb://bla.bla.company.com/share $". The shares are mounted then in "home/user/.gvfs/". ok.
In one of shares, is a file-based repo, which I can access easily with svn.
Unfortunately when I try to checkout any normal folder from a share (as in MS$ with Tortoise), I fail...
What's more in the file-based repo, external references exist to other shares in the network, the name is as "file:///X:/folder/file.txt". SVN gives error messages about such references and does not access files (where "X:/" is also mounted, but as a "test$ to smb://bla.bla.company.com/test$" in "home/user/.gvfs/ ").
My questions:
- what is the best solution to mount shares, so I can access all the SVN repos?
- How can I access normal files and folders from a share with svn?
- How can the problem with external file references in a file-based SVN repo can be solved? without to checkout/commit files "manually"...
- Some checkouted scripts (Perl, etc.) use libs from shares:
"Use lib qw(r:/tools/perl/lib/). how to get around this as well?
- How can I change mount-names: "test$ on smb://bla.bla.company.com/test$" to something like "share-test$?
- How can I change the mount location? in "home/user/SAMBA/" instead of "/home/user/.gvfs/"..
I had tried to use "fuse-smb": installed, created config, but when I run "fusesmb /home/user/SHARES/", i get an error message: smb.conf is missing.. Where can I get this config?
And one last question: Can someone recommend me a svn-gui? i have tried tried rabbitcvs, esvn and some others .. but all either do not work or crash.
I'm not sure, but maybe I can use svn and tortoise in wine, and checkout/commit the necessary files from/to "home/user/project/"? there raises the questions whether it is possible to install tortoise in wine and how to mount the shares on the wine? How to manage the hard-coded lib-names in some scripts...

Mar 9, 2010I have sucessfully joined my machine to Windows Active Directory (it wasn't all that complicated ). I was wondering where the uid information for users that login is located and managed? The reason I ask is because we are going to set up a separate NFS server and NFS relies on the uids of the users. I know there are numerous ways I can view the uid for a user (through the use of the id <username> command, do an ls on the /home directory displaying the uid instead of the translated name, etc), but is there a way to have this readily available (almost as the /etc/passwd file is)?

Oct 14, 2010I can't for the life of me figure out why I cannot browse my own shares from my linux boxes. both run OpenSuSE 11.3 I follow swerdna's tutorials and reboot several times but don't have a clue as to whats going on to prevent me from viewing localhost shares or 2nd linux box shares. I get 'unable to mount location, Failed to retrieve share list from server' error when I click on my workgroup icon in nautilus.

I tried to activate eth0 by using "ifconfig eth0 up " it returns no such device. I then tried "ifconfig: and it returns eth1 and lo but eth0 was not there. Host network adapters shows 2 virtual adapters ...WMware vmnet1 and vmnet8. What should I do next?

Apr 1, 2010I am using the mount command to mount Windows shared folders are another machine on my LAN, to have them show up in the Linux filesystem. The command mounts the folders just fine, however the access is read-only.
In the command, I am also using the -o option to specify a username and password that should have full access. Also, I have used this identical command on my other distros and it seems to work fine. I've Googled high and low, trying to find a way to specify a Samba user/password for authentication. I know one of the other distros had a program that I could specify a Samba user/password to simulate a Windows login.

Oct 2, 2010After upgrading my ubuntu server from 9.04 to 10.04, the window computers couldn't resolve samba shared names anymore, the error code displayed by Windows was 0x80070035.
I was using the ubuntu server as a samba server, using 'share' as the security authentication method, it has been working very well under previous ubuntu versions but, after upgrading to 10.04, the windows computers can't access the server shares anymore; the linux computers don't have any problems (I can access the shares from linux).
As a workaround, I've added the name of the server in c:windowssystem32driversetchosts; but I'd like to know how to fix the problem without modifying every windows computer.
Ubuntu Networking :: How To Access The Samba Workgroup
Jan 5, 2011I have one PC (morpheus) on which I've chosen to share a couple of folders in the home directory. The folders show the "Shared" icon in them and are chmod 777'd. I can access them by going to Dolphin -> Network -> Samba Shares -> Workgroup -> Morpheus -> Foldername ... but *only* on that same computer (Morheus). All my computers are running Kubuntu with KDE 4.5 and attached by ethernet.
If I try and go to Dolphin -> Network -> Samba Shares on *any* other computer, Dolphin just reports "Unable to find any workgroups in your local network. This might be cause by an enabled firewall." I've never set up a firewall on any of these computers. Do I need to open ports on my router just for this? Morpheus is set to DMZ mode on the router so it should accept *any* port request not assigned to another computer already.
I have a feeling that there's just something obvious I don't know, because in all my years of trying to get this to work on and off, I've never managed to find a decent *simple* CLI or GUI based tutorial or figure it out myself. The web just seems full of long threads of people having very specific problems unique to their situation trying to sort them out. I just want to share folders over a lan via KDE.

Sep 7, 2010I'm trying to set my openSUSE desktop up to use the printers on my office network via Samba. I managed to get it working in 11.2 but 11.3 is giving me some trouble.I am able to access the printers and use them but I have to enter my network credentials each time I print. In 11.2 I was able to "save" my username/password and was not required to do this. Are there any Samba packages I need to add in addition to the basic ones? There seems to be a lack of documentation on this particular subject, most is concerning Windows clients printing on Linux print servers.

Following instructions I found on the web, I edited etc/samba/samba.conf to reflect my desired hostname.
Now I have to use superuser to run synaptic or update center. I don't know what else I have "broken".
I would like to change my hostname, if I did it incorrectly for 10.04 please enlighten me.

Jul 17, 2010I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.
OpenSUSE Network :: Cannot Resolve Host Names On Local Network?
Mar 9, 2010I have a mac and an openSUSE box connected wirelessly to a router. From my mac, if I ping the Linux machine by both ip address and hostname "elmo.local", I get a response. If I ping my mac from the Linux machine using its ip address, I get a response. However, if I ping the mac from the Linux box using its name "kermit.local" - nothing!
This means in order to share files between them via the network, I have to use the ip address rather than name, but I'd rather not. When I had Ubuntu installed instead of openSUSE this all worked fine out of the box, so I'm assuming it's a problem with the setup of openSUSE rather than the router or the mac.
