Ubuntu :: Upgrade And Login - When Turn The Unit On It Asks For A Username And Password
Mar 24, 2010My daughter from New Zealand gave me her Acer Aspire 4315 Laptop/Notebook Linux System in December 2009 so that I could use it in bed on days that I was unable to get out to use my main computer as I am a very ill man. I was able to log into the unit as she just said to me to use her name and password to. I have been able to use the unit on the internet at home and my other daughters home through a home wireless system. I clicked on the Upgrade Icon which it did, I think it went from a 7. something to 8.something All the way through the set up it asked me questions and I just clicked yes thinking that was what I had to do. My problem now is, that when I turn the unit on it asks me for a username and password. I put the details my daughter gave me but it tells me invalid user and password. All I do know is that a friend of my daughter installed the Ubuntu Program onto the Laptop/Notebook. Can anyone tell me how or what I have to do now to be able to use the unit again as I am getting very frustrated with the whole thing. I am not used to using Ubuntu and am totally lost with it as I have always been a Microsoft user.

So I did an install in new partition beyond linux fc6. It finally lets me log in, giving a small text window. How to get to desktop, and is there a way to get to my old home files in linux fc6 in native linux partition?

I noticed that home folder sharing is quite easy as I just need to change the smb.conf file to enable it. However I can't seem to login anyway. It seems that Samba keeps its own records of username and passwords. Is there a way that I can map/sync the Linux users' usernames and passwords automatically to Samba? The end result should be that whenever I add a new user or a user changes his/her Linux login password,Samba automatically changes its password as well.

Jul 23, 2010I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 and trying to install a printer over the network which is plugged into a Windows 7 machine. I can see the workgroup fine and the computer fine on the network, but when I try to double-click on the computer (both via the nautilus and the printer setup route), it asks me for a username, workgroup and password.
I tried the account's username and password and username "Guest" with no password but neither worked. The weird thing is that when I booted my machine into Windows XP and tried to install the same printer, it never asked me for a username and password and installed just fine. Why is Samba/Ubuntu asking me for the Windows 7 password when Windows XP didn't need it?

Server :: Samba Share Prompt Username / Password
Sep 21, 2009I have set up my samba server. I tested from my windows side, all the public ones works fine except the [homes]. Here is my [homes] setting:

The homes is suppose to let each user see his/her own home directory. But I tested at the windows side, I found that windows doesn't even prompt me about username or password, it just directly give me "not accessible" error. How do I config so my windows side at least prompt me about username/password?

Sep 30, 2010I'm on Debian Lenny. I've shared a folder on gnome GUI, then went to win 7. I see my machine, SERVDEB01. When I click on it, I get the login popup. The workgroup set in samba is FILE-SHARING, so I login with the following: FILE-SHARINGmyuser password and that's when I get the unknown username or bad password thing.
I had a look to /etc/samba/smb/conf security = user is uncommented the shared folder appears at the end of the config file In despair, I've also created an identical user on win 7 and the linux box. I've been into the security Local Policies of windows 7 set NTLM to LM and NTLM (instead of NTLMv2) Here's my smb.conf in case it's needed.

Aug 22, 2010Installed mint 8 persistent on 16 gb usb with linux live installer. Everything worked fine, even the os and software updates (the first time I had a usb install that had everything work, boot up, wifi, persistence to name a few) I booted It up twice before, the night before I updated os and the software and tried to find a program to rip cd's. this morning I booted it up and It asked for a user name and password. I always use the same user name & password. Now It won't let me in. Do you think It has anything to do with the os update.

Mar 26, 2010I use fedora 12. I am facing this problem. Not exactly a problem but I can sure use a work around.
I usually connect to wireless network. The connection is automatic so whenever the connection goes down, it is automatically restored.
But sometimes, the connection goes down, nm-applet asks me to enter the password and will not proceed until I have entered the password. I have observed that this usually happens when the request to connect takes a long time or the wifi router does not respond immediately.
Is there way to change this behaviour? I want nm-applet to keep trying until its connected and not ask me for a password. This way I can be sure that my laptop is always connected and does not need my intervention.

May 15, 2010I have a 9.10 installation that I am unable to connect with SAMBA.
Attempts to access this (from Windows XP) give an error "the password or username is invalid".
I can see the computer, but not connect.
The Ubuntu installation is set up with the same user and password I normally use, and the files are setup the same way. I even copied smb.conf from another installation which works.
I set up SMB when prompted by shares-admin.

I am expecting any combination of commands in a single line, so that password is filled automatically IF PASSWORD IS ASKED. If password is not asked, the command must be executed.

Mar 15, 2010I currently have a UNIX script with a function that uses a username and password to connect to the database, retrieve some information and then exit. At the moment, am getting the username and password from a hidden plain text file and permission set to -r--------, i.e. read only to who own the file. The owner of the file is the same owner of the script. At the moment, am not too overly concern as the script works as it is but I want to know if anyone have a suggestion if there is any better way of achieving the same thing with some "form" of security, i.e., for example, masking the username/password.
Basically, I want to be able to mask or hide the username or password in some way. I've thought about encryting the password file, which is in plain text, using simple crypt command from which I retrieve the username and password but I need to decrypt it as well which is sort of similar to how it will be as it is now once it is decrypted. Is there anyway that I can get a username and password in some gibberish format and then translating them into something usable which can be passed on the next command that requires the username/password.
