I use openSuse 11.xx and all was going fine until yesterday. When booting up now, I can't connect to the internet any more. I takes much longer to boot now as if openSuse tries to look for something that disappeared or got corrupt. All started with the latest safety update.
View 2 RepliesThe Fedora machine acts like print and file server.But the problem, its the conection time.When i start the machine with fedora, takes like five or more minutes to appear in "My network places" in the windows machines, and if the server dont appear, i cant print and browse in the server files with the windows machines.I can browse in the internal network files (Windows folders) from fedora all the time, i have internet conection and with the internal network all the time, but the server just dont appear in the network places in the windows machines when i just start the server.
I check the samba status when i start (in the terminal), and its running.And i have a control program called "Control of Ciber", this program connect with the "Slaves" terminals and the conection appear in the server, but when i just turn on the server, the machines appear offline, and they connect after the same time taken for the server to appear in "My network places" in windows.I dont know if have a relation, but i cant open the share folders of the fedora machine in the windows computers, a error dialog appear (Privileges problem), and i just cant see the files in the folder.I give administrator privileges to everyone in this particular shared folder (Chmod 775), and i put the "Security = share" in the samba file. This issues dont happen in debian or ubuntu with the same configuration

Shutting down my machine takes a very long time! Not convenient when one want to pack his laptop (I don't dare to when the fan is still blowing).
Upon shutdown, I press 'esc' and see what's happening. The last commands seem to hang. First, shutting down the network interfaces seem to last long than needed (eth0, pan0, wlan0). Sometimes, it stalls also on "networkmanager disconnecting from DBUS" (or something like this ) (which is the very last command executed). Hmm, I will write the exact command down.
My ISP offers the service of native IPv6. So my ADSL router provides me with a local and global IPv6 address. However after a reboot it takes minutes to finally see the global address when using "ifconfog eth0". During that time I can't do a ping6 to an external server, which seems logical. So I waited several minutes, but no global address. After that I started a KDE session, went back to the console(<Ctrl>+<Alt>+F1) and now the global address was there. Is this normal behavior or should I file bug report?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am running Centos 5.3. I ran no updates, performed no installs, nor changed any configuration immediately prior to this issue. My problem is this: when I run the command startx (default runlevel 3), it is a long time (5-10 minutes) before Gnome startx, and once it does start applications will not run. Also, when I try to use sudo (from any environment, even ssh), it is a long time (5-10) before the command is executed.
I cannot say for sure, but it seems like this is an intermittent problem. Sometimes X takes a long time to start, but once it starts it will launch programs. Sometimes X takes a long time to launch, but once it starts it will only launch certain programs. Though presently X always takes a long time to start, and I cannot successfully launch any programs.
A while back a had a similar problem to this (x taking long time to start, sudo taking long time to execute) and it ended up being a DNS problem. Unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly what it was and I stupidly did not document it. Maybe this is also DNS related, I don't know.
I don't know what log files to look at for problems with X, Gnome, and sudo taking a long time to start.
Firefox take so long more that 2 min when started and there is no internet is available (i.e. Ethernet cable is unplugged).
I think FF is looking for the connection. How can I make FF ignores this check.
I need this because sometime I am away from my networks and I need FF for local testing for web development.

I currently have a Nexxt Lynx 150 Wireless USB adapter attatched to one of my home destops to recieve my wifi signal, however, i have run into a speed bump in terms of getting it connected to my ubuntu 11.04. This adapter works perfectly in windows and on the ubuntu live cd, but, when i install ubuntu to my hard drive and try to connect to my network,
it just takes a very long time, then says, disconnected. My signal is WPA2-Personal protected. Here is a link to the adapter's home page > [URL] It seems to me that this is a driver problem. The cd that my adapter came with has drivers for linux on it, but i havent the slightest clue how to use them.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter I installed a new hard drive, when I booted up into Ubuntu, it would give me this error: "failed command: WRITE DMA". So I tried the workarounds and I guess it just covered the log with the Boot Splash, now it's taking a long time just to boot up.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently changed my computer so it would auto boot into Ubuntu, but if I hold down the shift key, I can bring up the GRUB menu so I can choose Windows in the rare times I use it[URL]Anyway, I noticed that when I did that, it actually took longer to boot. I timed it today and it took 45 seconds from the time I pressed the power button to get to the login screen! My friend uses Linux a lot and says even with Ubuntu (which he thinks is "too slow") it shouldn't take that long.

It's been a while since this problem started. I have an Acer Aspire 4720z laptop with Ubuntu 10.10 installed. My laptop takes a whole damn 1.5 minutes to boot up and login (measured according to bootchart; I have auto-login enabled) (The majority of this 1.5 minutes is taken up after boot up, so it might indicate a problem with Xorg.)I don't know whether this is relevant, but when I boot up, a message gets displayed: "ata4.01: failed to resume link (SControl 0)". It takes a few minutes to start during boot and I just did a fresh install in a virtual machine. Haven't touched sendmail so it has default config. Someone told me it could be a DNS issue, but I can do DNS lookups and navigate the web well.

Can I disable it or change the boot order (via sysv-rc-conf ), so I can speed up my boot time?
I've just installed a fresh copy of 11.4 and the updates are driving me crazy. My internet connection is up, but the download stops and goes, and when I try using firefox, it takes a minute to even start to load any page. I have the system monitor up and it is telling me that the network is not receiving anything except for these bursts of data aprox. every 30 seconds.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently broke down in the face of morbid curiosity and clicked that little version update button. it seems to run flawlessly (after i uninstalled the pesky touchpad) but it takes a long time to boot up now. at least a full minute. is this normal?
I will add also that it said my version of grub had been modified (which i dont remember doing, but may have) so i told it to leave the current one in place.
I am installing openSUSE 11.2 on a laptop. After installation, reboot, auto-configuration, the screen show lines of text following "Starting SuSEconfig. The latest line is "Creating cache files for fontconfig". I don't understand why this specific operation takes too long; since almost an hour has passed. Is there a way to speed up and complete the process so that I can login and start using openSUSE? I did try hitting the spacebar and moving the mouse but nothing happens.

Durring the install, the update processe failed (presumably unble to connect to respository). I am usind a wired connection and the nic is connecting to my router and is recieving an address via DHCP. I am also able to ping the workstion from the router's Web interface. However I am unbale to connect to the internet.I have turned off the Suse firewall via Yast and checked the settings against another computer running ver 11.1 .Everything appears to be correct but no joy.

1. I configured my network card and eth0 is up.
2. I configured my DSL with user name and password and I am authenticated.
3. An IP address is assigned to me and the DNS servers are retrieved.
However I cannot ping or visit any website I use the YAST automatic configuration and kinternet to connect. Here are the gritty details

I do see that kinternet has trouble reading /etc/resolv.conf. It says 'permission denied' although read permissions are set on both /sbin/route and the path that it links to. This should not matter however since the existing entries are already there and valid. I also tried to turn off the firewall suspecting it could be a problem.
So I am being authenticated successfully ( verified with the logs ); assigned an IP; the route seems ok; firewall seems ok. But I cannot browse or do internet things I have been tweaking settings for 3 days now and all seems in vain. Do enlighten me on what I am doing wrong. I bet its something silly that I overlooked. I have had success configuring the same thing in red hat linux and browsing the internet without trouble. Is there something OpenSuse specific that I am missing ?
since installing opensuse 11.2 KDE, is that I can connect to the local resources when I'm not connected via the pptp vpn to the Internet but as soon as I establish an Internet connection, I cannot. Under Windows and other distros I've tried, this has never been an issue, usually I can connect to either local or Internet resources, interchangeably. In a nutshell, I don't know how to troubleshoot this.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just finished a brand new install of 11.2 on a workstation and it can't connect to the internet at all. I can ping Google and I can ping devices on my local network but I can't browse any web pages. I am able to ping the workstation with my windows 7 workstation. I tried disabling the firewall. I have it set to use DHCP.
UPDATE:
I can connect to google via IP. So it appears to be a DNS type issue, is there some settings I am missing?
installed openSUSE 11.3 and round that both wireless and ethernet connections could connect ok to my router but couldnt access the internet. I think its a bug because I didn't have this issue in previous versions of openSUSE.
The solution is to go into the ip settings in the wireless configuration, select the option to manually assign ddresses (not DCHP) and
- enter the ip address of your router in the default gateway and DNS server addresses
- manually assign an ip address to your computer rather than have the router do it
- it has to be in the same range as your router -n normally 192.168.1.x where x can be any number not already used.
I upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3, and now I can't seem to get my network/internet connection working. I am using a router and a cable modem, and the connection is of course DSL. I am using wpa2 for security. I can't even FIND where to enter my wpa2 key. When I upgraded from 10.x to 11.2, there was no such problem.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an Intel Mac that I recently added openSUSE 11.3 to to have a dual-boot system. This has been working fine for me for the last 5-6 months. Then on 1/18/2011 I shutdown my system and totally disconnected everything and moved it all out of my office, so new carpeting could be installed. After it was installed, I reconnected everything and confirmed that everything on my Mac side works just fine. Then I rebooted into Linux and everything worked until I tried to run Firefox to connect to the internet. I'm told every time that it could not connect to the server for whatever I tried to connect to. I AM NEW TO LINUX AND ANY KIND OF NETWORK/INTERNET PROBLEMS, SINCE I'M USED TO MAC WHERE EVERYTHING JUST WORKS. But, I did click on "computer" in the lower left-hand side of the menu bar at the bottom of the screen. This shows on the right-hand side under STATUS "Network: none" and then it states to click this to get it started or connected (I don't remember which) so I click it. This brought up a window asking me for my password and then a new window where it went through a checklist of things and presented me my network settings, which
means nothing to me. However, after this I tried Firefox again with not luck.
